On Seinfeld, they said that the appeal of two women fighting was the hope that in all the scuffle, they might kiss. I don’t buy that. If you want to see that, there are plenty of video series to fulfill your fantasy. I believe we like to see women be strong. We like to see that women can hold their own in any situation. Action movies provide situations that normal people just wouldn’t survive.
1) Kill Bill: Volume 1
For sheer girl on girl aggression per minute, I don’t think there’s anything tougher than the first volume of Kill Bill. Between The Bride Vs. Vernita Green, The Bride Vs. Oren Ishii and The Bride Vs. Gogo Yubari, I think this film represents the toughest, most brutal women in cinema history.
2) Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
If you want truly artful chick fighting, you’ve got to love the two bouts between Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. One ballet takes them from rooftops to courtyards and the other is a free for all with all the weapons they can find in a dojo.
3) Charlie's Angels
This movie displays the excellence of women fighting together as a unit, rather than against other women. Though there’s one fight between Cameron Diaz and Kelly Lynch, but it’s the team-up against Crispin Glover in the alley that’s a beautiful display of cooperation. You may wonder why I don’t have Angels’ predecessor The Matrix on this list. As cool as it was, it just didn’t glorify the woman the way Angels knowingly fetishizes them.
4) Total Recall
Sharon Stone Vs. Rachel Ticotin is a classic knock out brawl. Each of them get some nice shots in against Arnold Schwarzenegger too. When I saw that, it blew my mind.
5) From Russia With Love
Remember when Bond was in the gypsy camp and those two women started fighting? Then there was some big attack and all the gypsy chicks started fighting? That was awesome. And in the early ‘60s too, how forward thinking.
6) Aliens
This counts because the queen is apparently a “bitch.” Probably the only interspecies chick fight I can think of, original action heroine Sigourney Weaver uses a space aged robosuit to become an even match for the acid blooded killing machine. All over the protection of a daughter figure too, if you like the maternal undertones.
7) Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Alias
Some of the best chick fighting is on TV these days. Whether it’s Buffy Vs. Faith or Sydney Vs. Evil Francie, these shows empower both their heroines and villainesses, and employ some of the most exciting American choreography ever.
8) Million Dollar Baby
Want a realistic chick fight? How about the wonderful world of women’s boxing. Hilary Swank clobbers most of her opponents instantly, and the fights that do go on for a time show the nuance of cinema’s best boxing films.
9) The Heroic Trio
This Hong Kong film is a good mix of female fighters banding together and fighting each other. Full of insane wirework in the comic book vein, you’ll rarely see women get tougher or crazier than here.
10) The Big Doll House
Probably interchangeable with any ‘70s women in prison movie, or any Pam Grier action movie, but as good a one to single out as any. Somehow when they lock women up, it just brings out the worst in them. I can’t figure out why.
