Funny Anti-Drunk Driving Videos from Around the World

Some serious issues need a little humor to appeal to people and get the point across. In an advertisement, one can smile or chuckle without losing the message the ad intends to convey.

Drunk driving campaigns is no stranger to using playful and humorous commercials in telling people it’s seriously not okay to not be sober and drive. Anti-drunk driving advocates have used traditional and creative channels and strategies to address the problem. Whether through counseling, education, and/or media intervention, statistics show there’s an improvement on drunk driving in the United States.

Based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s statistics, drunk driving fatalities decreased from 15,827 deaths in 1991 to 10,228 in 2010. Both numbers are even lower when the agency started tracking alcohol-impaired driving in 1982 that had 21,113 fatalities. (Sources: Century Council & NHTSA)

But enough with the serious stuff. Anti-drunk driving campaigns range from blood and gore to plain text. Here I will show you some don’t-drink-and-drive commercials and PSAs from around the world that humorously and wittingly tell us that getting behind the wheel while boozed out is the just the stupidest thing to do.

“The Assassination” – Denmark

This is a Danish drunk driving commercial that was banned perhaps for its violence and dirty language. But hey, it’s sure is hilarious. If you’ve got a boss like that, maybe I’d never even attempt to touch a glass. Take note, the Danish are pretty serious about their forsikring or auto insurance costs so the poor guy’s got to learn a thing or two.

“Now You See, Now You Don’t” – Brazil

No, the cyclist didn’t fall in a man-hole of beer. It is (infra)structurally unlikely. The ad is quite straightforward. We’re not sure if it was highly effective, but it can be given credit for its creativity.

“Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk” – USA

This one’s an oldie featuring the Star Wars Cantina produced for the Department of Transportation in 1979. Star Wars geeks love this.

“Legend” – New Zealand

“Want a chip?”
“You know I can’t eat your ghost chip.”
Genius.

“Black Thai” – Thailand

First, they were so drunk to even identify where the door is. Then, they carry their car home. I don’t know if you could (or should even) carry your car home when utterly drunk, but you shouldn’t drive, for sure.

Roan Manguera writes about comprehensive auto insurance guides and all things Danish for international readers.

Mind Control Simplified and Applied to the Masses

The human brain is a complex maze of learned or inherited behavior patterns. Despite the vast array of mystery still unlocked within the brain, people like Genghis Khan, Hitler, and Jim Morrison and have all used the easily influenced human mindset to their advantage.

Hitler – The First Mass Media Mind Control
In today's world, the media is a popular method of mind control, and can be used by almost anyone. Television is the primary way to reach a vast audience and influence them, and Adolf Hitler used this method of influence quite effectively. Unbeknownst to Hitler, he was utilizing a change in the alpha waves of the brain. During television viewing, the electrical activity in the brain creates waves, indicating activity and alertness. When people are meditating, are under hypnosis, are watching television for long periods of time, or are being subjected to mind control, their brain remains in the alpha wave state. Thus, when Hitler aired his speech on television, he created a very suggestible audience who latched onto his propaganda with fervor.

Hypnotherapy and Alpha Waves
Although behavior therapy may have its value for those with psychological disturbances, many therapists turn to hypnosis or relaxation techniques for treatment, which allows a greater amount of alpha waves, rather than delta waves, in the brain. This creates a dilemma, as the alpha waves may certainly allow greater relaxation in a person, but can also make them very suggestible and receptive to outside influences. Brain Washing and Alpha Waves For many years, brainwashing techniques have been discussed with horror by the media. Brain washing, or the intense coercion and change of an individual's thoughts, concepts and feelings, has been the subject of controversy since the Korean War. Interestingly, brain washing is thought to rely heavily upon alpha wave induced acceptance for particularly emphasised modes of thought and behavior.

Ironic Parallels in Mind Control
  • Sleep deprivation and constant verbal and pictographic and audio messages are the techniques typically used to create mind control on prisoners.
  • Watching television also creates sleep deprivation, and pictographic and audio messages are also bombarding the brain.
  • Brainwashing creates higher concentrations of alpha waves.
  • Television watching also creates higher concentrations of alpha waves.
  • Brainwashing removes the ability to think independently, logically and with analysis.
  • Television, by inducing an alpha wave state, also removes the ability to process information independently and logically. Sadly, despite this wealth of research and information on the chain of evidence connecting television to mind control, more people than ever before are using television as their only source of entertainment, and ultimately, paying the price with lessened creativity and independent thinking.

Top 10 Chick Fight Movies - Women in Action

On Seinfeld, they said that the appeal of two women fighting was the hope that in all the scuffle, they might kiss. I don’t buy that. If you want to see that, there are plenty of video series to fulfill your fantasy. I believe we like to see women be strong. We like to see that women can hold their own in any situation. Action movies provide situations that normal people just wouldn’t survive.

1) Kill Bill: Volume 1

For sheer girl on girl aggression per minute, I don’t think there’s anything tougher than the first volume of Kill Bill. Between The Bride Vs. Vernita Green, The Bride Vs. Oren Ishii and The Bride Vs. Gogo Yubari, I think this film represents the toughest, most brutal women in cinema history.

2) Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

If you want truly artful chick fighting, you’ve got to love the two bouts between Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. One ballet takes them from rooftops to courtyards and the other is a free for all with all the weapons they can find in a dojo.

3) Charlie's Angels

This movie displays the excellence of women fighting together as a unit, rather than against other women. Though there’s one fight between Cameron Diaz and Kelly Lynch, but it’s the team-up against Crispin Glover in the alley that’s a beautiful display of cooperation. You may wonder why I don’t have Angels’ predecessor The Matrix on this list. As cool as it was, it just didn’t glorify the woman the way Angels knowingly fetishizes them.

4) Total Recall

Sharon Stone Vs. Rachel Ticotin is a classic knock out brawl. Each of them get some nice shots in against Arnold Schwarzenegger too. When I saw that, it blew my mind.

5) From Russia With Love

Remember when Bond was in the gypsy camp and those two women started fighting? Then there was some big attack and all the gypsy chicks started fighting? That was awesome. And in the early ‘60s too, how forward thinking.

6) Aliens

This counts because the queen is apparently a “bitch.” Probably the only interspecies chick fight I can think of, original action heroine Sigourney Weaver uses a space aged robosuit to become an even match for the acid blooded killing machine. All over the protection of a daughter figure too, if you like the maternal undertones.

7) Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Alias

Some of the best chick fighting is on TV these days. Whether it’s Buffy Vs. Faith or Sydney Vs. Evil Francie, these shows empower both their heroines and villainesses, and employ some of the most exciting American choreography ever.

8) Million Dollar Baby

Want a realistic chick fight? How about the wonderful world of women’s boxing. Hilary Swank clobbers most of her opponents instantly, and the fights that do go on for a time show the nuance of cinema’s best boxing films.

9) The Heroic Trio

This Hong Kong film is a good mix of female fighters banding together and fighting each other. Full of insane wirework in the comic book vein, you’ll rarely see women get tougher or crazier than here.

10) The Big Doll House

Probably interchangeable with any ‘70s women in prison movie, or any Pam Grier action movie, but as good a one to single out as any. Somehow when they lock women up, it just brings out the worst in them. I can’t figure out why.

Top 3 Retro Game Shows

There is strong evidence to suggest that I developed elderly entertainment habits at a young age. I've always found pure joy in shuffleboard and bingo, and I suspect I might genuinely get into bird-watching if I gave it a go. There's also my deep desire to hang out on my porch, read a book and yell at the neighborhood hooligans. Not to mention, if I knew how to work DVR (cough*more evidence*cough), I'd likely be recording episodes of Antiques Roadshow. It gets me every time.

But rather than delving into the joys of televised antiquing, let's chat about another old-timer passion of mine: retro game shows. While there are plenty to choose from, I've narrowed it down to my top 3 favorite retro game shows:

The Price is Right
Seriously, who hasn't dreamed of making an appearance on this show? I have to admit that my zeal faded a bit when Bob Barker left the air, but it still holds a special place in my heart. Every summer morning from elementary school through high school, my 9am hour was dedicated to the excitement of Plinko, Cliff Hangers and Line 'em Up. I may not have garnered any legitimate pricing knowledge from all those viewing hours, but the theme music still blares in my head whenever a friend announces that they bought "A BRAND NEW CAR!" I'd call that a lasting impression.

Wheel of Fortune
I'm not sure what I love most about this one -- watching the actual show or playing the old-school computer-game version. Whether I'm mentally solving the word puzzles or analyzing the magic of the letter board (seriously, were these early version of touch screens?), this show sucks me in. From the angst of buying vowels to the despairs of spinning bankruptcy, there is never a dull moment with this addictive word game. (Well, except for the occasional contestant who delays solving when the answer is clear as day. Though, I suppose even that is entertaining in its own this-guy-is-a-moron kind of way.)

Family Feud
I can't say it in big enough letters -- I LOVE FAMILY FEUD. Besides being proud of the fact that I can actually spell feud correctly (really, what language rule is that? E before U?), this show fills me with all kinds of joy. From the overzealous families to the intrigue of the answers, I enjoy every minute of watching this entertainment go down. I won't lie, my favorite parts of the show are when contestants give idiotic answers and their entire family pauses, visibly bites their tongues, and offer a half-hearted "Good answer..." while unenthusastically clapping. Let's be honest, all the thinly veiled eye-rolling is undeniably entertaining.

So there you have it -- my top 3 favorite retro game shows. What are yours?
