In Search of the Abominable Snowman

Yeti hunters are no strangers to the icy wastes of Siberia and the Himalayas in search of this most elusive of creatures.

The yeti – or Abominable Snowman – has eluded mankind since the first sighting in the 1920s, despite numerous expeditions which have unearthed giant footprints in the snow but never any definitive evidence of these towering beasts.

Villagers in Siberia have long been convinced of the yeti’s existence, claiming these Neanderthal-type beings roam the nearby desolate landscapes in search of food.

Sightings are rare – but have increased three-fold in the last 20 years – and only last year the largest official expedition in over half a century attempted to follow their trail.

Conditions are some of the harshest on the planet – temperatures drop to as low as – 40°c…but a team of international experts from Russia, China and the U.S. worked together in October in a quest to turn legend into fact.

Pushing the Boundaries of Human Endurance
In merciless, unrelenting conditions, these modern-day explorers were wearing clothing and carrying equipment built to battle elements that are amongst the most extreme known to man. It was all a far cry from days gone by when early explorers pushed the boundaries of human endurance in ill-equipped clothing and the most basic gear, including hob-nailed boots and pitifully inadequate oilskins.

Sightings of the legendary wildman of the snow – cousin to North America’s Big Foot or Sasquatch – were first documented in a 1921 British expedition to the Himalayas.
Said to be Homo Sapiens’ closest relative, Homo Neanderthalenis has been described as a large, hairy, biped humanoid, a hirsute beast up to seven feet tall, and part ape, part bear and part man.

Giant Footsteps in the Snow
Only a few weeks before last year’s multi-national expedition, one led - somewhat bizarrely - by Russian heavyweight boxing champion Nikolai Valuev found giant footsteps in the snow…but nothing more concrete.

The latest team of scientists concentrated on an area of western Siberia 3,000 miles and four time zones east of Moscow. They too, according to reports, drew a blank.

So how do you cope as a modern-day, fact-finding yeti hunter – and what do you wear to protect yourself from the biting winds and numbing cold?

The icy landscapes certain to be encountered bring a whole new meaning to the term ‘breath-taking.’ Without the right facial protection your breath will freeze, and any exposed skin will suffer irreparable damage from frostbite.

The further you travel above sea level, the harder it becomes to breathe at all due to the lack of atmospheric pressure, and hallucinations and inhibited mental function are common-place in the ever-thinning air.

Perhaps the most famous brands manufacturing footwear and apparel for such extreme conditions are The North Face, whose cold-weather clothing is legendary amongst explorers and adventurers, Scarpa – renowned for their Jorasses and Phantom mountain boots – and Berghaus and Rab, both long trusted by those who set out to conquer the challenges faced at the most far-flung corners of the earth.

The Extrem Asguard collection from Berghaus was developed from a prototype that was used on the first free ascent of the North Tower of Mount Asguard on the Artic’s Baffin Island.

Rab’s Neutrino Endurance meanwhile is the benchmark down jacket for modern mountaineering and lightweight ascents, while their Neutrino Plus has been designed for use in Polar conditions, at altitude and for extreme Alpine-style conditions.

The North Face Nuptse and Nuptse 2 will also deliver core warmth in a lightweight, compressible classic guaranteed to provide high altitude insulation.
  • A team of scientists from OxfordUniversity and the Lausanne Museum of Zoology in Switzerland are currently analysing a collection of ‘yeti’ remains found by a Belgian-French biologist over a period of 50 years.
Using breakthrough technology which has led to recent advances in forensic science, they are attempting to identify remnants of bone and hair collected by Bernard Heuvelmans between 1950 and 2001.
  • Russian politician Aman Tuleyev is offering a one million ruble reward - about $31,500 - to anyone who finds proof that the Yeti actually exists.
The governor of Kemerovo, where several ‘sightings’ of the creature have been made, told his local television station: “We need to sit down with him, drink some tea and talk about life."

Nicki Williams writes for Gear-Zone, where extreme adventurers will find the very best gear from brands including The North Face, Rab, Berghaus, Scarpa  and Montane.

BOOK REVIEW: Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fischer

Zombies Don't Cry:  A Living Dead Story ~ Book One

Author:  Rusty Fischer
Reading Level:  Ages 12 & Up
Paperback:  300 pages
Publisher:  Medallion Press (May 1, 2011)

In the sleepy town of Barracuda Bay, Maddy Swift leads the life of a fairly typical teenager, but while attending a party one night, Maddy is struck by lightning and awakens to realize she has been reanimated and turned into a zombie.

While becoming acquainted with her new "lifestyle", Maddy stumbles upon two unexpected undead chaperones, fellow students, Dane and Chloe, who begin to teach her the ways of zombie life, including defending the populace from Zerkers~the bad zombies.

Together, on Prom Night, the three teens must ultimately defend Barracuda Bay High from an all~out zombie Armageddon.

I love the writing style of author, Rusty Fischer, it is easy to read, often times comical and his main characters are heart~warming to follow.

I loved Maddy and her awakening into the zombie world, where she is unsure of her next move but glad to have her Zombie Guide in case she screws it all up.  I love her honesty and her approach to zombies, from renting B~grade zombie movies to just winging it as she goes along, it was enjoyable to this reader.

I loved that zombies have been given personalities and a can fall in love, get angry, worry...they just cannot cry.  I love the different classes between the zombies, with zombies now being those who have died by a certain circumstance and have found themselves reanimated versus those who have been bitten, such as, zerkers.  It often makes for a comical outlook with some gore thrown in for good measure.

I love zombies and would read anything on them and Zombies Don't Cry is worthy of four out of five stars for its genre.  I was quite impressed with the story, the characters and the new classifications of zombies that Fischer has incorporated.

I'm still out on the whole Guardian/Sentinel aspect of things.  I wish Fischer had given a bit more back story into these two entities as it was their involvement that left the most holes for me.  However, I'd love to read more by Rusty Fischer, he makes zombies good~!!

Learn To Read Tarot Cards

Easily Learn To Read Tarot Cards
Learning to Read Tarot Cards is an Inner Journey

In order to learn about reading tarot cards requires some focus, however, it isn‘t an arduous task. Actually, it can be quite a pleasant activity. The more time dedicated to perfecting the skill of tarot reading, the more you will get out of it. To be an adequate reader, learners will have to become skilled at properly reading the cards. The best tarot readers are very intuitive individuals. They have an innate talent for picking up signs and feelings of others and are able to transfer that information into the symbols on the cards. This doesn’t mean that books about tarot card reading aren’t valuable, but to get any pleasure out of card reading, there must be a personal fascination from the beginning.

-Learning to Read the Tarot Cards

Developing an intimate relationship with the tarot is rewarding. However, you don’t have to be a psychic or clairvoyant. There’s more to tarot card reading than memorizing in sequence from a book. The inspiring card reader must acquaint themselves with the cards by studying and writing down their impressions of them every day, at least for a half hour. The environment where you study should be tranquil and quiet.

To start, take a deck of tarot cards, a pen and a notebook. Select a spot in your residence that induces relaxation. If certain aromas or music helps you with concentration, burning incense, a scented candle or meditative music will do. Let go the world, and go within. After naturally feeling the urge to pick up the tarot card deck, begin shuffling the cards. While doing this, let your mind be free of any anxieties or challenges. Concentrate on slowing down your breathing to put you more in touch with your feelings. Anything that comes to the forefront of your mind, write it down in your journal. It’s important to acknowledge our feelings. Feelings are the pathway to the Soul. This is similar to the same ritual that psychics or mediums use for their impressions. If we fail in this very important phase, the ability to perform a tarot reading is diminished. Repressed emotions have a way of causing us to lose objectivity.

Following a few moments of relaxation, draw a card anywhere from the deck. Lay it down in front of you, and examine it. Write down the name of the card into your journal, and answer the subsequent questions:

-What life lesson does the card portray?
-What do the drawings and imagery represent to you?
-What type of vibrations do you get from the card?
-What is the theme of the card? What is it saying?
-What type of feelings does the card bring out in you?
-How does is the story significant to your own life?

Answering these kinds of questions, will assist you in getting in touch with each card’s meaning. In addition, during these exercises its fine to reference a quality tarot card book. When all is said and done, tarot card reading is a personal journey where you must be the driver and the vehicle as well.

Devil's Hand by M.E. Patterson

Devil's Hand is a Supernatural Occult Thriller.

Trent Hawkins is the "luckiest man alive", especially after he falls out of an airplane and is the only survivor of a horrific plane crash.  He has been blacklisted from Las Vegas as his uncanny knack at cards has casino owners looking at him with suspicion and bad luck seems to follow those who are around him.

When Trent's wife, Susan, is given a job at the Children's Hospital in Las Vegas, they move back with great trepidation.  Trent doesn't know if a year away is long enough for old bygones to be let go but for the love of his wife, Trent is willing to do anything for her.  Upon arriving back in Vegas, the two are hit with a hail storm that soon turns into falling fish.  Bewildered and confused, they chalk it up to high pressure weather fronts and before they are even unpacked, all hell breaks loose and Trent is the only person who can make things right.

Children in Las Vegas are being kidnapped and returned to their parents in a vegetative state.  No one at the hospital can explain what is occurring and on the night that Trent and his wife arrive in Vegas, Celia, a thirteen year old who is allergic to water, has been rushed to the hospital in anaphylactic shock.  Celia doesn't know it yet, but she is being hunted by an Angel named Zamagiel.

Zamagiel wants to return to Heaven and he believes by ridding the Earth of all sin, he will get himself a one-way ticket back to his home.  He has resided in Hell for far too long and wants to live by the Grace of God once again.  He uses Salvatore Cortina as his host body, Salvatore is a street bum who lives in the sewers beneath Las Vegas.  He isn't a willing host and is often fighting Zamagiel for control.

Trent has gained powers that he has now been forced to understand in order to save humanity from the grips of evil, to stop the War that is brewing amongst the Angels, the Cherubim and the Grigori's, everyone has their own agenda.  Some like the order of things as they are and want War diverted in that they may continue enjoying their Earthly pleasures, some want the Prophecy to be fulfilled in order to amend God's severing of the Angels from their Host and others just want more anarchy and chaos and only one group's champion will secure the future.

This is a fantastic debut novel by author, M.E. Patterson.  It has intrigue, mystery, angels, demons, magic and more included for this engaging ride into the fantastical world of Angels and Demons.  Using Las Vegas as a backdrop for the creatures was quickly impressive, if anyone has ever read Hunter S. Thompson's rendition of Las Vegas, you will see the similarities between the reptilian races and the thoughts of the late author had.  If I was going to make one place in the world as the core of Hell, then Las Vegas would be the optimal place to locate such.

I loved the history being shared about the Angels and their positions held on Earth and in the eyes of God.  I enjoyed the expression of faith and free will that the author shared, it was on par with how I view the angelic realms.  I thought the characters were wonderfully written and the back stories shared brought enough light to the situations that the characters found themselves in.

The written style of M.E. Patterson reminded me of early style Stephen King or Robert R. MacGammon, written with clarity and insight and urged the reader to continue with the story.  I found it hard to put down and needed to finish the story and was equally pleased to see the ending did not fail the story.  I am hoping that there will be more adventures involving Trent, the author left so many doors open in the ending that it would be hard to miscontrue his intent.  At least I am hoping his story isn't finished, I would love to read more, the possibilities are endless with such a scenario.

I would give this book five out of five stars and for me, this is a rarity, I don't hand them out to often, but this book definitely has the charisma and depth to encourage others to share the story within its pages.  Devil's Hand isn't a book one should ignore, not if you like Angels,  the paranormal and an excellent written style to bring it all together.

Spotlight & Giveaway - Tonya Macalino author of Spectre Of Intention

About the Author...

Tonya Macalino lives in Hillsboro, Oregon with her husband and two children. She is an avid collector of folklore and folk history, far too many to fit comfortably within the pages of any given book. When not working on her latest novel, she runs a handcrafted lotion, cosmetics, and bath company.

The Subtle Difference Between Runaways and Pioneers
by Tonya Macalino

Thanks for having me over! My name is Tonya Macalino and I am the author of SPECTRE OF INTENTION, a paranormal thriller set on a space elevator adrift in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

At first glance, that might seem like a strange setting for a story about Kaitlin Osgood, a woman so lost in life she can’t even settle on her own identity. At first glance. But maybe after a few minutes of looking, a reader might realize that a space elevator is the perfect metaphor for a story that was originally titled “Runaways.”

So what is a space elevator? Well, as the space shuttle program ends, the space elevator is one potential alternative for delivering payloads into space. It is quite literally an elevator to space with (in this story) a mega-cruise ship on one end of the cable and a space station on the other.

And this becomes for Kaitlin the symbol of the ultimate means of running away.

Kaitlin has come to that place we all reach eventually, where she has to either face down what she fled or keep fleeing and let it eventually devour her. She looks up at that elevator and realizes she just isn’t that desperate anymore.

Over the course of the story, she comes to understand that not everyone who walks away is running, but that like the pilgrims and the pioneers that came before them, some of the people boarding that elevator are stepping forward to become something greater than what they were before—if they can just make that first brave, blind step.

Now, Kaitlin will have to decide if she, too, is ready to become a pioneer in her own right, a pioneer into a safe, honest life where deception can finally be laid to rest…or not.

Thanks again for inviting me to visit and I hope you take the time to meet Kaitlin Osgood in my book SPECTRE OF INTENTION

 About the Book...

“Secrets, Kaitlin. Secrets.”

Kaitlin Osgood has a stowaway.

Underneath the glossy shell of the Senior VP for Countermeasures International lurks the tattered remains of the girl she once was: street rat and thief, Ashley Porter. Every day, every decision is brittle with the fear of discovery.

In the middle of the Pacific Ocean on the cruise ship acting as the platform for the latest space elevator, she should finally be safe…

…safe from the sexy, enigmatic eyes of Director of Port Security Camden Glaswell who seems to see through Kaitlin’s ruse.

…safe from the relentless, burning pursuit of master thief, Stephan Chen, the chief architect of Kaitlin’s former life of crime—the onetime lover who haunts her still.

But Kaitlin has another secret: her talent for security comes not from the latest technology, but from her ability to sense people’s emotions, to see the ghosts of their intentions.

It’s a talent she must learn to wield as a weapon before the mistakes of her past cost Kaitlin her life…

Lessons I’ve Learned From Early Readers
by M. E. Patterson

It’s easy, when you’re first getting started in the whole writing game, to assume that you’re “pretty darn good at this and, come on, when someone finally reads my masterpiece, they’ll be blown away!”

Except that you’re wrong.

The part that’s tough, the part that makes a lot of first-time writers grimace (and makes some give up and quit outright), is when you hit that first set of reactions to your work… and realize that you’ve got a long way to go.

So where do you get reactions that can really help you move forward?

Early readers.

And by early readers I don’t mean your Mom or your best friend, but people who will be willing to give you hard truths about what you’ve written. People who will challenge you to do better. My early readers taught me several major things that I’m going to share with you. Maybe you’ll recognize them in your own work?

Sentence Flow and Word Choice
I’m not going to say that every sentence I write is a masterpiece in terms of structure and rhythm. Probably few of the sentences are. But having someone early on point out what I was doing that “hit the ear” badly has helped me immensely in crafting more readable prose. It’s a benchmark I always keep in the back of my mind as I’m building up a sentence or paragraph, and one that I wish more published authors would think about.

In short, when writing a sentence, think about how the words flow together and sound. It might seem picky. It might seem like the sort of thing that you’d want to ignore with the excuse, “Hey, if my story is exciting enough, nobody will care about those little things.” But trust me on this. People will have trouble completing a book that has terrible sentence flow.

For example, if all the words in a sentence start with the letter S, the sentence will slow significantly and sound strange. Maybe you want to do that to emphasize the point of the sentence. But if you’re writing action, I’d take a different tact. And like any gimmick, doing it once might be clever, but doing it a lot will make you look like a bad writer.

Overall Plot “Tone”
This is an interesting one brought up by one of my early readers on a previous draft of Devil’s Hand. It resulted in major rewrites, all which contributed greatly to the improvement of the story.

The idea here is that you can imagine the ‘tone’ of your story kind of like a steady musical note. When the action goes up, the note is high-pitched and sets your nerves a little on-edge. When the story dips into sequel and quite reflection, the tone is calm and comfortable, but risks being boring if it goes on too long. Different genres and different types of stories might have their own ideal tone patterns, but the common problems to look out for are:

SQUEAL: A constant, high-pitched tone from the first chapter to the last. Too much action, buddy! All scene and no sequel. Even if you’re writing a screenplay for the next Crank movie, Statham needs to take a quiet moment to wash the blood off every once in a while.

HUM: A constant, calm tone. No conflict. This story is just poking along and nothing much is happening. It might be interesting or original or even important, but it’s still likely boring. Maybe okay if you’re writing certain types of literature that are more introspective, but you better know that’s what you’re after.

PSYCHO: A tone that’s all over the place. Four chapters are high-pitched, then suddenly calm and boring for eight chapters, then high-pitched again without any warning, and so on. You haven’t figured out the scene and sequel rhythm yet. There’s a certain expectation the reader has of falling into a story rhythm. For a master of doing this right, check out Cormac McCarthy.

Same Words Used Too Close Together
Sure, it’s easy to figure out that you just wrote, “He went down to the Department of Redundancy Department.” Redundancy usually jumps out at us. But a more insidious flaw is when we craft a paragraph, or even a whole page, where we keep using the same, unique word in a way that starts to stand out to the reader.

Now, don’t go running off and replace all your “he said”s with “he growled” and “he conjectured.” Note that I said “unique words.” Thinks like “he said” blend in and the reader doesn’t really read them so much as just absorbs them. What you really want is to watch out for how many times in a single page you’ve described the bald man’s pate. Or how often in two paragraphs you mention that the main character brought out his leather billfold. It’s a unique word or phrase that gives your prose some life. But too many times and it starts taking the reader away from the actual story.

So those are just three of the big ones that I struggle with and had early readers point out. Acting on that realization improved my novels tenfold. Take some of these considerations to heart and I promise your writing will improve.

What other big-picture issues have early readers pointed out in your writing?

Spotlight - Gregory Marshall Smith author of Hunters

Hunters
By Gregory Marshall Smith

For centuries, vampires have owned the night. And in Fort Worth, Texas, master vampire, Louis Riordan, aims to keep it that way. With the help of Lin Tang, his lethal enforcer, he will unite sixteen of the continent’s top master vampires into the most powerful undead alliance the world has ever seen.

Rumors abound that Lin Tang’s most hated enemy, Cantrell Ryker, has returned from the grave and there are hunters in town, ready to take back the twilight. Vastly outnumbered and outgunned, with dissension in the ranks and a traitor in their midst, these hunters fight for humanity side by side. They now have a weapon that could turn the tide of the age-old war between man and vampire once and for all.

About the author...

Gregory Marshall Smith, born in Somerville, Massachusetts and raised in historic Medford, is a decorated Navy veteran. Though sports writing is his profession, in his career, he has been, among other things, a national columnist, playwright, engineer, asset protection agent, editor, safety auditor, fingerprinter, training instructor and sometime actor (Heiju trilogy; Life As We Know It; The Odd Life of Timothy Green; Detroit 1-8-7; Contagion; Walker, Texas Ranger).

He is the author of the novellas Crawl and They Call the Wind Muryah, along with two anthologies (Dark Tidings Vol. I & II). He has had numerous award-winning short stories appear in Farspace 2, Writer’s Bump, Far Side of Midnight, Spectacular Speculations and SFH Dominion, among others. Hunters is his first full-length novel.

Ever restless, he currently resides somewhere in America.

What Gregory Marshall Smith has to say...

Is There Room for Old School In the New School

When I sat down and wrote Hunters, a lot of people asked me why I was bucking the trend. I was supposed to go with the flow and attach my name to the list of others copying the trends.

The current trend, of course, has been to glorify vampires as objects of desire, affection, friendship and other emotions most dads won’t talk with their teen angst-ridden daughters about.

This isn’t exactly a new trend. The television show Sons of Anarchy on FX glorifies a group of psychotic, murderous, drug dealing, gun running bikers while make the law either corrupt or incompetent. You’ll find this trend of making really bad guys into good guys in shows like Breaking Bad, Prison Break, Breakout Kings, The Sopranos and Weeds.

In the new world of the vampire, Twilight’s example can also be found in Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Vampire Academy, Anita Blake and a host of other vampire-themed books in the “Young Adult” sections of bookstores or online.

That said, is there still room on the shelves for old school vampires?

Hunters, currently available at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Apple and Smashwords among others, certainly is old school, namely in that the heroes are humans who hunt down vampires.

The humans and vampires who inhabit this world are a very interesting lot. For the vampires, we have Louis Riordan, more than 400 years old and leader of a large and powerful Mafia-style clan of vampires who control the night and have thoroughly corrupted the system, including the police and city council. His enforcer is the exotic Lin Tang, a master swordswoman and mystic. Together, they will unite the most powerful master vampires into the most powerful alliance of the undead.

Fortunately, a brave band of humans rises up to defy Riordan’s plans. Most of them have had their lives torn asunder by hominus nocturna, including Jesus and Dolores Montoya, who had to hunt down and kill their own daughter when she became a menace to society; Marcus Van Niekerk, South African mercenary; Jessie Kellums, who lost three of her brothers to vampires, and Kelly White Cloud, herself a former slave of Lin Tang.

And then there’s Cantrell Ryker, the one hunter who antagonizes his own hunters as much as he does vampires. His reputation for destruction was once legendary among vampires and what he did to Lo Chang, the man who trained Lin Tang, has made him enemy number one for the exotic assassin.

Outnumbered and outgunned, fighting dissension in the ranks and a traitor in their midst, these hunters will take on overwhelming odds to save mankind. And they just might do it with a new weapon that could turn the tide of the entire war between man and vampire.

Yes, vampires may always have been portrayed as sexy and seductive, but don’t forget one little fact -- WE are their food!

Just like Blade and the Nightstalkers or all the way back to Van Helsing, the Hunters must go old-school and save us from ourselves.

Surely, there’s still room in the world for that.
