BATTLE OF SOLOMON'S ISLAND:
A little known story of the heroic efforts of the small village of Solomon's Island to waylay the British fleet after they burned the public buildings in Washington, D.C. during the War of 1812. CAMP SUNSHINE:
For her ninth novel, Ruth Francisco brings us a WWII saga, based on the true story of Camp Gordon Johnston, an amphibious training camp on Florida's desolate Gulf coast. It is a tale of young men on the brink of war and a country on the brink of civil rights, a tale of soldiers and officers, daughters and mothers, death and redemption, and a man unyielding in his integrity, compassion, and struggle for justice.

Here, in this harsh but mystically beautiful land, twenty thousand young recruits test themselves to the limit in love and combat; politicos and tycoons offer aid with one eye to profit; women patrol the coast on horseback, looking for German subs; a postmaster's daughter, the only child on base, inspires thousands with her radio broadcasts; and a determined woman bravely holds together her family and the emotional soul of the camp.

But when Commanding Officer Major Occam Goodwin discovers a murdered black family deep in the forest, he must dance delicately around military politics, and a race war that threatens the entire war effort. Amid tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the soldiers and their country hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to find his destiny.

Illiata sees the young Lord at the same moment and from that time on; their lives are inextricably intertwined forever.

The day after the attack, Illiata and her father bury her mother and young brother and attempt to organize what is left of his workshop and their home. So much so she purchases a completed shawl and discusses the possibility of Illiata joining her household as a seamstress. However the Lady is Renée’s mother and the appointment enables the two of them to spend some time getting to know one another. Unfortunately, his mother sees the possibilities and disapproves leading to many unfortunate adventures for Illiata.

But Renée is not able to help Illiata as he is attempting to prove himself to his father, the Lord. EYES THAT COULD KILL:
When being abducted once, is just not enough.

Langley Garret's Sunday morning starts very badly after waking with a hangover and a depressed feeling of worthlessness, along with a foreboding sensation in his gut. With his wife working away yet again, and the realisation that their marriage is probably very close to an end, and that his life is slowly ebbing away, he ponders his misfortune.

As he decides to start accepting that his life just couldn't get any worse, over his breakfast of coffee, cold pizza and orange juice, it does, when his miserable, quiet and lonely Sunday morning is interrupted by a woman with 'Eyes That Could Kill', and who has orders to abduct him.

Within hours of being questioned, captured, drugged and restrained, he finds himself dumped onto a small remote island, with no idea at all why he was taken bodily from his apartment on a tranquil Sunday morning, or why he is sitting alone on a rock, with only his suitcase and a pleasant view of the sunrise across the water for company.

As with all mysteries, it takes some time for Langley to learn a little about why he was abducted, but before he has time to start digesting that limited knowledge, his second abduction a few days later has him totally confused, and all at sea.

Remnant Of The Beast:
Beauty broke the spell by falling in love with the Beast, and they lived happily ever after. For Elise, her friends, her father, and every other citizen of Colmar, the story was a fairy tale created by the older generation to help little children sleep at night without fear.

But, forty years after Belle and over sixty years after the curse, the legend becomes a haunting reality once again. Joined on one side by Marshall, who is possessively in love with her, and joined on the other side by her invalid friend Patric, who Elise feels she must protect, Elise never thought she would also befriend the prince and take her own place in the fairy tale.

Unfortunately, the return of the Beast means more than finding beauty and love among ugliness and hate. The Beast has real-life consequences that result in misery, confusion, and suffering, and the return of the Beast means Elise must choose who and what she cares about most and must discover whether, like her predecessors, she can tame the Beast.

Her Dark Eyes:
A beautiful black panther is stalking Flora Lee. Yet this animal can't be real, can it? Infact, it a symptom of Flora's recently diagnosed eye disease – a condition that is potentially disasterous because Flora is one of Britain’s most celebrated artists.

Her consultant at the eye hospital, Max, is as fascinated by Flora's cat-shaped hallucinations as he is with Flora herself. He introduces the famous painter to his odd hobby - hunting for ABCs (Alien Big Cats) - by taking her to track a mystery beast with his friends from 'CatFlap', an eccentric group of 'cryptozoologists'. Although the expedition fails to find any trace of an ABC, the trip is brought to an abrupt and violent end by a savage attack on Max's wife by an unidentified assailant.

Returning to the zoo, where she is engaged as Artist in Residence, Flora discovers a half-wild teenage girl, Lou, hiding in her studio. Lou implores Flora to help her become a painter and the artist can't resist the challenge. There are many extraordinary things about Lou but the most astonishing is that she is stone blind; Lou paints by smell and by touch and produces stunningly visceral works.

At first, Flora is intrigued by Lou - empathising because of her own eyesight problems - but soon she is emotionally overwhelmed, and so obsessed that she decides to share her residency and hang Lou’s pictures alongside her own in the climactic exhibition to mark the end of her residency at the zoo. As the opening approaches, however, and Flora becomes more and more infatuated, Lou's motives seem increasingly menacing, and her relationship to Flora's 'imaginary' black panther becomes more mysterious and disturbing.

This dark, imaginative and sexy thriller, written with great insight into the art world by fine art photographer Alex Korvy, is an exploration of deceit, jealousy and betrayal that will haunt the reader long after the final page is turned.

The Dark Beneath Its Skin:
The Dark Beneath its Skin, is a teenage and above horror - fantasy novel, that is mainly plot driven and a one off stand alone story with no prequels or sequels. It has a couple of character revelations along the way that change the viewpoint and give it some twists. It does have a minimal amount of swearing and violence and has been rejected by ten publishers, but I hope one or both of those facts will not be enough to put you off reading it.

The main character Lucy, a fifteen year old is instantly obsessed by the strange red cherry tree at the bottom of her new garden. She feels there is something evil and malevolent about it and that it's trying to draw her to it so it can control her. Even more so when a strange, single, black cherry appearing at the top of the tree, and bad dreams add to her obsession, one that is beginning to take over her life, and those around her begin to notice the slow but strange changes in her behaviour.

These changes start to cause conflict between Lucy, her mother, her younger brother Jack, and even her new boyfriend Dean, when she insists it's the tree making her act out of character. But they think it ridiculous that a tree can be evil and it's just her way of trying to come to terms with the loss of her father the year before, and her rebelling against having to move to a new house and school.

However, one evening when John, the eqaully uncharacteristic vicar of the church that is just beyond the graveyard at the bottom of her garden, and Dean, are unexpectedly invited to tea, she takes the opportunity to once again convince everyone that the tree is evil. All it does though is convince all but one around the table that she needs professional help when her behaviour in front of them finally pushes her mother's patience to the limit.

Lucy is just about to be sent to her room when John suddenly stands and states that she may not be inventing these things after all, and that there is some truth in what she says about the cherry tree. But when Lucy and her mother return to the table and he explains to them that the tree is indeed a vengeful incarnation derived from the curse that an evil witch called Urxa put on those who burned her alive on the very spot where it now stands, more than four hundred years earlier, it not only heightens some around the tables scepticism, but also the young girls curiosity leading to a dire chain of events that will eventually affect them all.

And now someone has to stop Urxa. But who, and how? Perhaps that someone should look to the world that surrounds them for their answer, as there are many powerful forces that bind and shape our lives, but there is none more powerful than the one that will finally brings the witch down.

A hit man takes on one last job before a much-needed vacation, only to discover that this seemingly routine hit just might be his last... A trucker develops an extreme case of insomnia after picking up an attractive young hitchhiker who is not what she appears to be...

For centuries, it has remained hidden deep in the heart of the Hockomock Swamp. The Native Americans called it "The Place Where Spirits Dwell"; a sacred place of untold terrors, where time itself stands still. Now its evil influence is spreading to the nearby town of Hevven, Massachusetts, corrupting all that it encounters, growing more powerful with each victim it taints. Soon, no one will be able to escape The Still...

Nine intertwining tales form a single terrifying portrait of madness, lust, revenge, and an evil as old as time itself.

BOOK REVIEW: The Sigh by Marjane Satrapi

The Sigh by Marjane Satrapi

Hardcover:  56 pages
Publisher:  Archaia Entertainment (December 13, 2011)
Language:  English
Reading Level:  8 and up

SYNOPSIS:

Rose is one of three daughters of a rich merchant who always brings gifts for his girls from the market. One day Rose asks for the seed of a blue bean, but he fails to find one for her. She lets out a sigh in resignation, and her sigh attracts the Sigh, a mysterious being that brings the seed she desired to the merchant. But every debt has to be paid, and every gift has a price, and the Sigh returns a year later to take the merchant’s daughter to a secret and distant palace.

My Thoughts:

The Sigh is about a merchant and his three daughters and before each journey he asks them for whatever their hearts desires.  Only this time  he is unable to satisfy Rose, his youngest daughter's wish and she attracts "Ah, the Sigh".  He tells her father that he will give him the seed of a blue bean and one day he will return to ask for a favour.  The father agrees and everyone is happy until exactly one year later...

The father must now accept the terms of agreement and with deep regrets he allows Rose to leave with Ah and step into whatever fate decrees for them all.

Along the journey Rose encounters many lessons in life and from each she learns something new and takes it with her to her next moment.

I loved the richness of the book, the illustrations were done in a cartoony~ish way that will delight young readers and the cover is just gorgeous.  The book is quite charming to read and the morals and tenets that the reader peruses as you follow Rose on her journey into humanity are lessons that many people should incorporate into their lives.

I was impressed with the direction that the story took and was pleased with the outcome and I feel that young readers would truly enjoy reading the story of Rose and her sigh.

I would give The Sigh a three and half stars out of five.

BOOK REVIEW: Whatever Happened To Pudding Pops? by Gael Fashingbauer Cooper and Brian Bellmont

Whatever Happened to Pudding Pops?  The Lost Toys, Tastes & Trends of the '70s & '80s

  • Reading level: Ages 18 and up
  • Paperback: 240 pages
  • Publisher: Perigee Trade; First Edition edition (June 7, 2011)
  • Language: English

If you owe a couple cavities to Marathon candy bars, learned your adverbs from Schoolhouse Rock!, and can still imitate the slo-mo bionic running sound of The Six Million Dollar Man,Whatever Happened to Pudding Pops? The Lost Toys, Tastes & Trends of the '70s & '80s is for you.

The book, by Gael Fashingbauer Cooper and Brian Bellmont, takes you back in time to the tastes, the smells, and the sounds of childhood, when the Mystery Date board game didn’t seem sexist, and exploding Pop Rocks were the epitome of candy science.

But what happened to the toys, tastes and trends of our youth? Some vanished totally, like Freakies cereal. Some stayed around, but faded from the spotlight, like Sea-Monkeys or Shrinky Dinks. Some were yanked from the market, revised and reintroduced...but you'll have to read the book to find out which ones.

So flip up the collar of that polo shirt and revisit with us the glory and the shame of those goofy decades only a native could love.

This was a great book to peruse and if your the kind of person who enjoys reading in the bathroom, then this book is definitely right up your alley.  Filled with many interesting tidbits about the things we have come to know and love.  It's an easy read, which doesn't have to be read in order or in one sitting, its one of those books that you can read whenever you wish to & always find something to enjoy.

There were many icons from the era that I had forgotten about and it was really interesting to be reminded about these blasts from the past.  The book reads in alphabetical order which makes it easier to find what your looking for, such iconic pleasures like, metal pudding containers, K-Tel, Hugo (Man of a 1000 Faces), Big Wheel, Fantasy Island, Bazooka Joe and so much more.

If you have lived thru the times, then there is something in this book that you will enjoy reading and remembering about.  Its written with clarity and an easy-to-read format and though the reading levels states 18 and older, I feel that anyone with a reading capacity could easily understand the prose found within.

I would give this a 4.5 out of five stars.  I thought the authors did a remarkable job in their research, but I would've loved to have seen more information with each of the icons as well as a few coloured photos would've been nice.  However, it's a fun and entertaining read and I am sure everyone will get a kick out of remembering those "good ole days".

Interview - Nicole Langan - Publisher at Tribute Books

Beginning in 2012, Tribute Books shall be changing their Young Adult titles into eBook format.  Today I have Nicole Langan from Tribute Books here with me to help better explain what is about to occur with their new transition.

Tribute Books began in 2004 and they have over 30 published titles accredited to them.  Winning many awards, including Christian Small Publisher of the Year Award and Moms Choice, they cover a wide range of genres, from children's books to sports to history.

During their 2011 year season, they realized their sales for eBooks was outpacing their print books by 2 to 1due to the rise in eReader sales.  The decision to begin 2012 on the right foot was an easy one to make and YA eReader formatted books shall be their new vision.

1.  Why is Tribute changing their Young Adult titles to eBook format?

Over the course of 2011, we've watched our ebook sales outpace our print sales by 2 to 1 due to the explosion in popularity of e-readers such as the Kindle, Nook and iPad. The under $5 price point of most of our e-titles and the ease of purchase and delivery surely facilitated this rapid change.

Overall, our transition is based on three factors. On a business level, the young adult genre sells especially if it is well written and has a paranormal romance theme. On a marketing level, the devotion of the young adult fan base is unparalleled. On a personal level, I thoroughly enjoy a good young adult novel and review many on my blog at http://tributebooksreviews.blogspot.com. I'm a believer in doing what you love and working with like-minded people, when it's at all possible.

Manuscripts that have already been professionally edited will receive greater consideration. Our preference is to work with authors who have already been published through a royalty-paying press and who know the ins and outs of book promotion. An established social media platform is a must, and we will not consider writers who do not have a well-followed blog, Facebook page or Twitter account.

We're looking for submissions that are not explicit or erotic in nature. In keeping with the young adult age range, manuscripts should be appropriate for a PG-13 audience.

Interested authors can submit their manuscripts via email to info@tribute-books.com. There will be no charge for the authors we select to work with, and they will receive 50% of the net profits of their ebook sales in quarterly royalty payments. We're looking for Microsoft Word documents with a maximum of 350 pages of text with no photos, charts, illustrations, graphs, etc.

We try to keep an active online presence with our web site (http://www.tribute-books.com/), Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Archbald-PA/Tribute-Books/171628704176), Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/TributeBooks)  and blog (http://tributebooks.blogspot.com/). We'd love to have anyone who loves young adult literature to join us for the ride.

2.  When you say solely, does that mean readers will be unable to purchase print copies?

Yes, all titles published from 2012 forward will only be available as ebooks. However, the titles we published from 2004 through 2011 will continue to be available for sale as hardcovers, paperbacks and ebooks.

3.  Are there any future plans to change any of your other titles and selections to eBook format?

For the most part, all of our previous titles are already available in ebook format and can be found at http://www.tribute-books.com/shop.html

4.  Why do you believe that eBooks have become so popular?

I can only see the ebook trend increasing in momentum as the price of e-readers continues to lower and more and more people start using this new technology. The industry shift is similar to what occurred in terms of music buying habits when iTunes downloads became more popular that CD purchases. There will always be a market for print books, but I think the majority of book sales will soon be electronic. People want the cheapest, quickest and easiest way to obtain their reading material.

5.  In all honesty, your own personal preference Nicole, do you prefer print copy or eBook formats best??

Although, Tribute Books is transitioning into a solely e-publisher, personally I'm a fan of the print book and have all the respect in the world for publishers who are able to financially continue to stay the course. I, too, bemoan the impending cutbacks that the printed book is facing. It's a head vs. heart issue. The financial picture and technological shift favor the ebook, but die hard readers will always crave holding a real book in their hands.

**  I have to agree that the ONLY genre I consider reading in eBook is the YA genre...or if it has to do with zombies...hehe  However, I'm a die hard and real books will ALWAYS outshine the electronic kind!!

We, here at the Moose Marsh, wish you and Tribute Books all the best in success Nicole...may it follow you WHEREVER you go~!!  Thank you for stopping by and clearing a few things up for us...we truly appreciate that~!!  **

How To Introduce Your Baby To Poetry

You are never too young for poetry. As young as infancy, our minds can appreciate and learn poetry. From the moment your baby is born, the mind develops. His or her eyes and ears process what is going on before them. You have the ability to begin shaping and developing that mind from the moment you bring your sweet baby home. Poetry will help your baby learn to appreciate the world.

Poetry helps children discover words and language. It becomes the way babies learn how to express themselves and learn how to communicate. Teaching your baby to appreciate and love poetry will help inspire your child with the desire to read. With a few simple things, you can lay the foundation for a life filled with poetry.

Rhymes
Nursery rhymes not only teach kids vocabulary skills but teach them poetry and language skills. Parents using rhymes in a sing song fashion as you move throughout the day exposes infants to rhymes at every turn. There are rhymes that deal with numbers and letters and animals and people. These rhymes give babies and toddlers the information that helps them grow. Rhymes also help sooth babies; the rhythm and cadence can help a fretful baby and a fretful parent.

Songs
From rhymes come songs, filled with rhyming words and catchy tunes. Your baby will begin repeating and learning these songs and rhymes and will fill their minds with words and rhythms. These rhythms will naturally lend themselves, as your child grows, to music and creative language development. Take time to sing silly songs as you change a diaper, fix lunch, nurse your baby, prepare them for bed. Any time is an opportunity to fill your child’s ears with the sounds of poetry.

Talk
Talk to your baby. Expose your baby to words-- even those that do not rhyme. Give them a vocabulary and share your knowledge with them. Babies brains develop at lightning fast speed and they are always learning. Give them the tools to put names with new concepts. As you expose new words, and as your baby grows, give your baby an opportunity to practice. Rhymes and poetry help create interest in language and in new ideas.

Read
Read your baby small rhyming books. Rhymes are very captivating to babies. It captures their attention and helps their imaginations take flight.
