Off Roading – The Ultimate 4x4 Hobby

If you’re thinking of starting a new hobby and you like fun, excitement and you enjoy building your skills, then you should consider off roading.

Off roading has been around for several decades as a leisure activity. It all started after the Second World War when GI’s began buying the same types of Jeep they had used during the war and driving them around America’s countryside.

Since then off roading has grown into a massive industry with millions of people all over the world taking part in off roading holidays or even investing in their own off road vehicle to drive whenever they like.

Where can I go Off Roading?
In the UK there are hundreds of places where you can try off roading out. Try searching the internet to look for a provider that’s close to you if you just want to give it a try; or if you want to really go for it you can book an off roading holiday in various rural areas throughout Britain.

Who goes off roading?
People of all types and ages go off roading so joining a 4x4 club is a great way to meet people. You can be any age or sex and you can consider yourself a great driver or want to build your confidence. As long as you’ve got a driving licence you can have a go.

Is Off Roading Expensive?
Off roading doesn’t have to be expensive. You can book an activity day for under £50 and if you have a large group it becomes even cheaper. Of course if you want to invest in your own 4x4 then you will have to spend some money, but when you consider the use you’ll get out of your vehicle and the enjoyable times you’ll experience it’s well worth it.

Can I go off roading abroad?
There are hundreds of holiday destinations that offer 4x4 experiences but in some areas you may require extra insurance if you want to take part. Off roading is a great way to explore holiday destinations from a different angle and fantastic for beach holidays where you might want a break from the towns and beaches.

What can I gain from off roading
Driving a 4x4 across difficult terrain is an ideal way to improve your driving skills and be a more confident driver in your daily life. Once you’ve negotiated rocks, rivers and rugged landscapes then a spin through the city centre will seem like a doddle.

Driving a 4x4 can really get the adrenalin pumping so it’s a great way to inject some excitement into your life and relieve all that work stress.

Off roaders are a friendly bunch so if you want to get out there and meet like minded people then it could be the perfect activity for you.

Jade Coleman enjoys blogging about action packed sports and motor racing experiences.

The course itself is just as exciting as the surroundings and consists of a two hour guided tour through two sky bridges and six zip lines that reach heights of 150 feet.

Bask in Nature’s Beauty With Cypress Valley Canopy Tours in Austin, Texas

Peru tours: A Handful Of Unique Experiences in Peru

Peru is a beautiful country offering stunning rainforests, historic and religious sites, museums, nightlife, and so much more. With so much to do in Peru it can seem overwhelming to decide where to go and what to try, especially if you only have limited time while visiting the country. If you're looking for a really memorable experience, here are some of the most unique and interesting things that you can do while in Peru:

1. A Cooking Tour in Lima
In South America, Peru is known for its good food, and this is especially true in Lima. The cuisine here combines both Spanish flavourings and techniques with old Peruvian cooking styles. You can spend a few hours with an expert in the kitchen, learning some of the signature dishes of Peru and how to make sure they are authentic and delicious. Lima is very popular for cooking classes and cooking tours, so you can also take a walk around the city with a guide, visiting some of the places best known for their food and learning all about the ingredients and how the dishes are made while sampling them as well!

2. Visit the Market
Shopping is a popular past time for many, but most people probably think of huge malls and designer clothes when they think of going shopping on vacation. Try something different by shopping in a traditional Peruvian market. You can find fun, handmade souvenirs, local foods and ingredients, and much more for great prices.

3. Hike through Machu Picchu
Considered one of the "New Seven Wonders of the World," Machu Picchu is a beautiful place to walk through if you want to see some history and culture. It was built in the 15th century by the Incans, and due to its location it remained almost completely untouched during the Spanish Conquest, making it one of the most preserved Incan sites left.

4. Cruise the Galapagos Islands
You can easily take a cruise from Peru to visit the Galapagos Islands, where you can enjoy the scenery and especially the wildlife. See the famous giant tortoise, as well as other animals including iguanas, the blue footed booby bird, and lava lizards. Many of the animals living on these islands cannot be seen anywhere else in the world.

5. Visit Cusco
There are a number of places to visit in this city, so choose what interests you the most. Perhaps it is seeing the historic architecture and important buildings of the past, such as the Iglesia del Triunfo, a church, or Barrio de San Blas, a street where many artisans and workshops can be found. There are also places to go shopping, museums to visit, and places to get a bite to eat.

SPOTLIGHT: Gordon Gumpertz author of Red Hot Sky

Join Gordon Gumpertz, author of the action/adventure novel, Red Hot Sky, as he virtually tours the blogosphere January 3 – February 29 2012 on his first virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book!

About the Book...

CO2 buildup in earth’s atmosphere reaches a tipping point. Global weather destabilizes, turns chaotic. Ice storms, dust storms, floods, blizzards, hurricanes, tornadoes pummel the earth nonstop. A secret computer model reveals that the frantic weather will peak out, and transform world climate into an alien environment devastating to human survival.

Scientists Ben Mason, Claudine Manet, and Bertrand Short are developers of the computer model. Ben and Claudine are lovers as well as lab partners. While they work frantically to head off the approaching catastrophe, a disgraced Russian general hacks into their model and sees earth’s bleak future as his opportunity for ultimate world power.

Ben, who had left the CIA to develop the computer model at the national lab,  is reactivated by the Agency and sent on a perilous mission to block the rogue general’s plot. Claudine, not realizing that Ben is on a secret mission, misunderstands his absence, putting their relationship on thin ice.

Claudine is placed in charge of a massive NASA project that, if completed on time, could stop the approaching doomsday climate change. But her project is stalled by bureaucracy. Ben is on the run in hostile territory. The climate change calamity steadily approaches.

About the Author...

Gordon Gumpertz brings fiction readers another exciting action/adventure experience in his new novel RED HOT SKY. This is the author’s second book, following his highly acclaimed novel TSUNAMI.

In addition to writing novels, Gordon has won gold and silver awards in national and regional short story competitions. He is a member of the Authors Guild, the Palm Springs Writers Guild, a UCLA graduate, and an instrument-rated private pilot. He keeps his website current by blogging on natural disasters and natural phenomena.

Gordon and his wife Jenny live not far from the San Andreas fault, where the Pacific Plate thrusts into the North American Plate, building increasingly high levels of faultline stress which, the seismologists say, may soon produce the Big One.

Read the First Chapter...

Chapter One - Red Hot Sky
Ben Mason pulled on a ski jacket and watch cap and walked out of his Arlington apartment into the bitterest ice storm he could remember. Head down, he forged his way to his aging Chevy Blazer. He set the defrost on max and inched through the whiteout, finally reaching the lab in Falls Church at 7:35 p.m.
His lab partner, Shorty, six-foot-five Bertrand Short, stared at rows of rolling numbers on his computer screen. “Worried you wouldn’t make it.”
“Test run’s still scheduled for midnight, right?”
Shorty clicked an icon on his screen. “Nobody’s said otherwise.”
“No ice storm’s bad enough to keep me away. This could be the most crucial night of our lives.” Ben pulled off his watch cap and ran fingers through his black hair, then draped his parka on a coat rack.
Shorty finally looked up, the light catching glints of red in his thatch of blond hair and the two days of stubble. “Jesus H. Christ! You look like you been set on by a pack of hungry coyotes.”
Ben stretched his wiry six-foot body. “I was working the speed bag at the gym, and this pro came in looking for a sparring partner. I got lucky and knocked him down with a left hook. Big mistake.”
“About as smart as goosing a rattlesnake. No headgear?”
Ben poured coffee and wrapped his hands around the warm mug. “Forgot, and he tagged me a couple times.”
Shorty said, “You oughtn’t to go around messing with those pros. You mighta boxed in college, but you’re too damn old and too damn slow now. You’ve come in more than once with those blue eyes of yours closed down to slits. One a these days they’ll knock out what little brains you got left.”
“Keeps me in shape. And I’m okay.”
“Glad to hear that, because Secretary Flagler’s been trying to get you.”
Ben called on the secretary of energy’s private line. “Sorry, Mr. Secretary, I got tied up.”
Flagler’s voice sounded tinny on the speakerphone. “Beeson’s gunning for you.”
“Doesn’t surprise me. Did you explain?”
“He won’t listen. Wants to get you and Dr. Short up there before his committee on a fishing expedition. Anyhow, expect a call from the senator himself.”
Ben massaged his sore temple. “What’ll I say?”
A pause. The lab was after-work quiet. Flagler wheezed, “Try not to antagonize. He has a lot of power and could hurt us.”
A half hour later, Ben and Shorty were looking at the florid face and angry eyes of Senator Marcus Beeson on the other end of a videophone connection.
“I’ll tell you straight away I’m pretty damn mad. You two are making me late for a New Year’s Eve supper with the vice president and his wife.”
Ben tried to sound respectful. “Sorry your evening is messed up, Senator, but I don’t understand how we ….”
“Well let me tell you. I found out this is the night you’re planning to run that damn fool experiment. I’m telling you not to do it. If you do, you and Dr. Short will be called before my committee.” Bushy black and white eyebrows slanted up. Each word was accompanied by a rap of knuckle on desktop. “And I’ll have the FBI investigate you for violating national security.”
“This was all cleared by Secretary Flagler,” Ben said.
“I’m flying to London with him in the morning. I’ll damn soon find out if he’s part of this conspiracy. Or just gullible. Grabbing control of all ten of our country’s new supercomputers at the same time undermines national defense. Christ, who do you guys think you are?”
Ben said, “The secretary and I met with the directors of the national labs involved. They understand the importance of the experiment. And we’re asking for time only between midnight and five. They all agreed on midnight January first because it’s the time of lowest demand.”
Beeson’s jowls swayed as he shook his head. “If they did, they’re a bunch of misguided fools. The whole cabinet’s called to complain. Defense, homeland, intelligence, treasury, interior, health, everybody. Just exactly what is it gives you priority over the military and every other department in the government?”
Bertrand Short spoke, his twang straight Oklahoma. “We’re tryin’ to find out what the greenhouse effect’ll do to our future climate, and that’s why we built this here global warming computer model. But like I told Ben, we need a computer the size of Texas to make it work.”
Beeson’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t know what you’re really trying to pull, but I intend to get to the bottom of it, and when I do there’ll be hell to pay.”
Ben said, “Shorty, I mean Dr. Short, is right. Computing power’s what we need, and a lot of it. So I came up with the idea of hooking all ten of the new Quantum Five-Thousands together by satellite to create one massive computing source.”
“Why can’t you get what you need with one or two?”
“Senator, there’s just too much data in the model ….”
Shorty picked it up. “We got historic records and prehistoric measurements of just about everything that’s ever happened to this planet since the ice age. Temperature, humidity, rain, snow, drought, flood, volcanoes, earthquakes. Hour by hour. Every centimeter of the earth’s surface, subsurface, oceans, and atmosphere.”
Ben said, “It’ll take all ten running together to digest that much data and establish the trend lines and push them forward far enough.”
Senator Beeson wagged a sausage finger at the camera. “Your so-called greenhouse research is a waste of taxpayer money. Weather’s getting hotter, everybody knows that.”
Ben said, “Hotter, sure, but more erratic. We just don’t know where this greenhouse thing is taking us. If our computer model works, it’ll show future climate patterns and give us a big advantage in strategic planning. Economic and military.”
Beeson’s scoff sounded like a pig at feeding time. “What are you people really up to? I know a cock-and-bull story when I hear it. This greenhouse stuff is a smokescreen. Something’s going on. I can smell it.” His sausage finger wagged a warning. “You can expect a summons to appear before my committee. Both of you.”
Ben was still seething when he called Secretary Flagler to tell him they’d just been royally reamed out by Senator Beeson.
Flagler said, “I’ll try to calm him down tomorrow. Now let’s review the ground rules. The directors of all ten labs have agreed to give you midnight to five a.m. eastern standard for this test phase. That’ll be you and Dr. Short and Dr. Manet to make sure the hookup works.”
“Dr. Manet’s on an emergency trip to New Orleans.”
“Okay. So just you and Dr. Short will decide if this hookup is viable. All ten computers will be standing by to receive your satellite signal in exactly one hour and twenty-nine minutes. Is everything ready at your end?”
“We’re all set, Mr. Secretary.”
“Give me a report at four thirty in the morning. Call me at home. I’m leaving for the airport at five. Senator Beeson and I are catching an early flight to London for that energy conference.”
Ben walked to the window. Crunch time. The future of the planet might well be at stake, as well as his job as head of the project team and his standing in the scientific community. The ice storm had cleared for the moment. A half-moon spread pale light over Falls Church and the sleet-covered grounds and low buildings of National Science Laboratories. The big dish antennae would be iced over. Would that screw up the satellite link?
If things didn’t work, he’d never get a second chance, probably be demoted to some dead-end job. Maybe the CIA would take him back. He’d left the agency after two years and accepted this job with NSL because his work in the CIA lab was boring. He’d wanted more excitement. Now he had it. Everything was riding on the outcome. Well, nothing more he could do at this point. Just wait.
Shorty fidgeted and went to the john. He opened the window and took in great gulps of fresh air. Finally they were only seconds away from their moment of truth.
Ben pushed the start button. He stared at the panel of ten indicator lights that would confirm connection with each of the supercomputers. All dark. He held his breath.
Shorty hovered over the indicator panel. “We got satellite lag time, but didn’t figure it’d take this long.”
Ben said softly, fervently, as if coaxing dice in a crap game, “Come on, system. Come on!”
A moment later, the first green light blinked on. Lawrence Livermore. After a few more seconds, JPL, Sandia, and National Science Laboratories lit up, followed by a ten-second delay. Then Los Alamos, Oakridge, Brookhaven, and Argonne came on at the same time. All but two were now in the green. NOAA-Princeton winked on. Finally, Cornell. At last, all ten online.
Ben yelled, “All right!” He slapped palms with Shorty.
Shorty said, “We got the power hooked up. Now let’s see if the dang thing works.”
Ben inserted the disk and hit Enter.
A date appeared in the upper right-hand corner. One month from today. A Robinson’s Projection of the earth popped onto the screen. The resolution was amazing. Every feature of the earth’s surface stood out in multihued three-dimensional relief.
“Good lord above!” Shorty said. “Never thought I’d see a grid scale this fine. All that computer power is really doing the job.” He put his coffee mug down with a thunk. “I know it’s only a simulation, but sure as shootin’ looks like the real thing.”
Ben just looked at the display for a few minutes, savoring the beauty of it and the fact that everything seemed to be working. “I’m going to click forward now month by month to look at the rest of this year, then go for year two.” He left each month on the screen for two minutes before moving to the next.
Shorty studied the screen alongside Ben. Both were quiet, intent.
“End of year two,” Ben said. “What do you think so far?”
“If our model’s right, the world’s in for one mighty big shitload of weather.”
“You see a pattern?”
“Chaos is what I see.”
Ben nodded. “Heat waves, hurricanes, tornadoes, monsoons, ice storms, dust storms, floods, blizzards, droughts. Nonstop. One on top of the other. “Same erratic weather we’ve been having the past few years, only worse.” He tapped the mouse. “Let’s go out one more.”
Shorty’s brown eyes lingered on the screen at the end of year three. “Holy frijoles! Ain’t never seen nuthin’ like it.”
Ben’s smile was a half grimace. “You can drop the country cousin routine anytime.”
“Well, I’m serious, Pardner. Weather’s working itself up into some kind of frenzy. Like the Fourth of July when they build to the grand finale and shoot the works.”
Ben sipped his cold coffee. “Yeah, pretty frantic everywhere.”
“Look at Europe!” Shorty leaned in close. “Monsoon rains melting the snow, rivers busting their banks.”
“Everyplace has something bad going on. Ready for year four?” Ben asked.
“Before we go there, I’d like to say something. What we’re doing has never been done before. Looking into the future has always been the province of the Lord.”
Ben swung away from the keyboard. “We’ll have to make sure it’s a power to be used only to help mankind. Never to harm.”
Shorty patted a hand-stitched Justin boot. “Let’s go to the next year. Don’t think we’re gonna like whatever’s coming, but I got my boots on, so I’m as ready as ever I’ll be.”
Ben launched into year four. He stopped when he got to April. “Hey! Where’d the storms go?”
Shorty scratched his blond chin stubble. “Look, Ben. Pink blotches all over. Big time drought!”
They studied the wide belt of pink patches wrapping around the earth, extending from the equator thousands of miles north and south.
Ben waved a hand at the monitor. “Can this be right? Most of the world drying up?”
“Strangest drought pattern I’ve ever seen. Just about every last speck of wet weather’s moving to the polar regions.”
Ben checked worldwide ocean temperatures and currents, but all the normal indicators of an El Nino or oscillation effect were missing. This was something quite different. He clicked to five years out.
Shorty muttered, “Pink patches remind me of a gal I used to know wore polka dot underpants. But these blotches are humongous. Thousands of miles across.”
Ben ran the cursor up and down the screen. “General drought digging in between the fifty-degree parallels. Scattered exceptions.”
“Go out to years six and seven,” Shorty said. “See if the dang thing’s still there.”
Ben clicked and stared. “What do you make of this?”
Shorty craned his head over Ben’s shoulder. “Whoa there. Spots are a deeper red. Looks like the planet’s come down with a case of the measles.”
“Redder means hotter.”  Ben switched to a blowup of North America, then zoomed in to a close-up of the red spot hovering over the plains states. He tweaked the focus and resolution, zoomed back out a little to make sure the boundaries of the area were clearly defined. Shorty hitched his chair up close. They stared at the screen a long time, bodies tense, thrust forward.
Finally Ben sagged back in his chair and looked at Shorty. “As bad as it looks?”
Shorty tucked his red western shirt into boot-cut jeans. He stretched to his full six foot five and bent down to look again. “All I can say is, this’s weirder than a cow with twelve tits.” He put his finger on the spot, then the projected date. “Is that what the simulation is telling us? This is the way things’ll be seven years from now?”
“Exactly. That’s what the model says.”
Shorty’s voice was uneasy. “I know this can happen on someplace like Jupiter. But here? On our own planet?”

The World’s Most Terrifying Theme Park Attractions – Your ‘Final Destination’?

The World’s Most Terrifying Theme Park Attractions – Your ‘Final Destination’?

The most terrifying rollercoaster in the world of fiction is undoubtedly the Devil’s Flight Roller Coaster depicted in the film Final Destination 3. If you’d prefer your action just as fear-filled but less fatal and more real, there are a number of terrifying, tantalising and terrific theme park rides that will have you on the edge of your seat – if there is one.

Zero Gravity Thrill Park located in Dallas, Texas tops the list by offering the world’s largest collection of fear-filled fun in the world. The entire park is nothing to look at and it lacks the carnival atmosphere of a traditional theme park, and it is oddly silent for a theme park. There are no fake screams of terror here. Every ride has been designed to scare and leave you breathless. The Suspended catch Air Device has been used by scientists to test the perception of time experienced by humans during a near-death experience. It’s that terrifying.

The Vomitron needs no explanation as to how it gets its name; this ride is a part of the area called Adrenalin Park on the Gold Coast of Australia. Not technically a theme park, this is a collection of rides that lives up to the title ‘Adrenalin’, as does the name ‘Vomitron’. You never know which way is up and the speed of the Vomitron gives riders the experience of being on a roller coaster.

Kingda Ka will only be back in action next year. The world’s tallest roller coaster has been besieged by technical and safety problems since it opened in 2004. If you are looking for real fear then the Kingda Ka ride at the Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in New Jersey, is guaranteed to have you screeching. You don’t ride Kingda Ka and expect to live; which is all part of the fun.

Kingdatoro

Formula Rossa is now the record holder as the world’s fastest roller coaster. Located in Abu Dhabi at Ferrari World, this ride launches you by means of complex hydraulics and mechanical madness into a ride that reaches speeds of up to 240 kilometres per hour.

Action Park was another great theme park, but sadly due to the many injuries and an increase in the appeal of health and safety, the Cannonball Loop is no more. The design of the ride defies the laws of physics, which is all part of the attraction, of course. When the human body enters a loop, according to science and nature the G-forces exerted on the body are strong enough to break your neck. Besides, you’d look silly wearing a helmet and your swimming costume when riding the Cannonball Loop.

Action Park Image Credit

The Sky Roller also allows riders to experience extreme G-forces and what they can do to your body and your stomach. The Sky Roller is found at a number of theme parks but you only hit the pinnacle of extreme G-forces for a second at a time.

Dreamworld Theme Park in Australia delivers a host of horrible rides like The Claw, The Giant Drop and The Cyclone. Speed, screams and fear chase each one of them.

BOOK REVIEW: Noah Zarc by D. Robert Pease

Noah Zarc:  Mammoth Trouble is Book One of a new Science Fiction Adventure for Young Readers.

Noah Zarc is twelve and is a quadripelegic from birth and is the youngest of three children.  He, his siblings and his parents are time travelers who have dedicated their lives to bringing animals back to the uninhabited Earth.

Noah loves living on the Moon and looking after all the animals he and his parents have collected.  They travel through time to collect animals that have gone extinct in order to repopulate the Earth after the great Cataclysm where the Earth was destroyed and people were forced to move to Mars and Venus.

Life on these planets is harsh but the harshest of all are the Venusians.  Their planet is over-populated and you cannot walk outside or you will die instantaneously from the poisons in the air.  The Poligarchy rule the planets and they are adament that no human shall ever live on Earth again.

Not everyone is happy about this and Haon sets to bring his own kind of justice to the status quo.  Haon grew up on Venus and he believes it is appalling that people live like little less than animals while the Earth has been deemed protected.  Haon wishes to kill off all the animals in order to save his people from certain death.

When Noah's parents go missing, its up to Noah and his brother and sister to find them.  The last known whereabouts of their parents was in the Arctic around 6500 B.C., and the three must find their parents and stop Haon from destroying the animals forever.  Will Noah have the stamina and the courage to stop Haon from reigning destruction down especially after he learns about some things about Haon that could change his decision?

I thought Noah Zarc was an excellent reader for young minds.  I loved how the story unfolded, drawing the reader into the world of the Zarcs.  I thought Noah was a very likeable character who used his disabilities to his advantage instead of feeling sorry for himself.  I found him to be wise beyond his years and his approach to most situations was carefree and reckless, however, he always felt remorse that things didn't always turn out the way he had predicted.

I didn't get much feeling for the parents, however, each of the children was written wonderfully, even Adina, who stows away on their ship and ends up being a formidable friend to have.  I would've liked to have shared more of Adina's wonder in her new surroundings, considering where she was from, everything shouldn't have been as simple as it was for her.

I also had a hard time feeling conviction for the plot, I truly understood where Haon was coming from and I am not sure why more people don't agree with him, taking a stand against the powers that be that forced his hand.  It was a real toss of my emotions to choose a side to believe in and seriously, I was truly attuned to Haon and his thoughts and conjectures and though his actions were drastic, I understood why and secretly routed him on.  Everyone had been living without animals for this long, why would it be such a bother to continue without them, I mean, everything happens for a reason and the animals died off.  I also believe the humans on Venus should have a better chance at survival then some animals that had already died off.

I would give Noah Zarc a four out of five stars.  I loved how the time leaping was explained; the Hawkings theory of time travel was shared in a new light, making it very easy to understand for anyone.  I couldn't feel for the plot, as I previously mentioned, I was torn between the antagonists and the protagonists.  I also found, during certain dialogues or thoughts, that the story read like you were missing something, like there was a book before this one, even though this one clearly states book one, I kept looking to see if I was missing something.  Like some of their past experiences were mentioned to the reader as if the reader had already journeyed there with them before.  It was a tad frustrating but not at all a hindrance to the read.  I truly look forward to reading the next book in the series!

BOOK REVIEW: The Sylvan Horn by Robert Redinger

The Sylvan Horn Book One of the Sylvan Chord is a Young Reader Action Adventure.

Efkin is a young Elven Lord who joins a quest to hunt for the Sylvan Horn and break the Runes that are about to destroy the world.

The Elves have always been protected in their realm from outsiders but chaos is ruling and the boundaries that once protected the Elves are failing.  Trolls have been entering the forest and killing all they come across, the Elves wish to broker peace but the Trolls want no part of it and a battle ensues.  It is there that they learn that the Trolls are able to call upon magic, a very rare and uncommon event.  Trouble is brewing and its up to Efkin and his party to find out who is behind the Troll advancements.

Following the puzzles set before him, Efkin leads his group to the one place Elves are not able to go or they will die.  The Humans have the Horn and it lies hidden in a mountain of iron and only those brave enough will journey beyond the borders in order to return the balance.

Along the journey, Efkin learns much about himself and the Horn, as the mysteries unfold, Efkin is lead to the power that is behind the upheaval and the truths that lie before him.

I thought this was a decent read, it had some great characters and the plot is a believable one.  I thought the book at times was written rather quickly without enough detail to the situation and the reader was left to reread certain passages to make certain they understood them.  Other times the books pace was great and you were immersed into the story and felt the need to finish the quest with Efkin and his group.

I liked how sinister the land of Humans with their death giving iron was written.  I enjoyed reading about the worries and wonders of Efkin as he drew closer to his destination as well as learning the history of the races and their relationship to iron.

I liked the elder Elves and the powers that they had, however, I found they always showed up when they were needed and the reader wasn't giving much in their back story which made me feel like they were an outside piece of the story which didn't allow for their natural blending into the story.

I would give The Sylvan Horn a three and a half stars out of five.  The story does pick up and slow down about halfway and you don't feel as rushed as you read it.  I would've liked to have seen more magic and more back story involving the characters; I didn't really get a feel for many of those who were involved with the plot.  However, I can see great potential in this series and would love to continue reading to find out the final outcome of Efkin and his quest of the Slyvan Chord.

SYNOPSIS:
Before the days of men, there were elves. In a time they were great and powerful, the first dwellers, the brightest ray of dawn upon the earth. They brought light and music to the world and every breeze that stirs and wave that crashes still echoes with the wonder of the fair folk.

But a foulness is brewing in the east, where men deal in sorcery. They summon dire forces, unleashing a terrible power into the world. And the elves, once immortal, now fade from the earth. But knowing that all sorcery comes from Runes that were carved ages ago, Efkin, a young elf lord, races to find and destroy the hidden Runes before all is lost. He sets out to recover the horn of his ancestors that long ago summoned the forces that shaped the world. Only the horn has the power to break the Runes. He journeys into the east, but comes too close to the heart of sorcery and does not dare blow the horn. If he is tainted by the poison of the Runes the horn will sound a ruinous note that could spell the end of the earth.

BOOK REVIEW: The 58th Keeper by R.G. Bullet

The 58th Keeper is a Children's Action Adventure.

Archy Bass is very non-descriptive, he has plain features and a bowl shaped haircut.  He attends an all boy school as part of an agreement between his foster care mother and the school.

Archy is lonely, stays in the shadows and tries to stay out of Headmaster Elms' path.  That is, until the day that Archy meets Vincent, billionaire son without the silver spoon in his mouth.  The two of them hit it off right away and one day Vincent arranges for Archy to go on a working archaeology holiday in Greece.

Archy loves his vacation and on one of his excursions to the beach, he runs into a rug merchant, Alturus, who exchanges a magical rug with Archy's walkman.  Archy has no idea how to use it but when the Kurul, a huge warrior race of Giants, realize he has it, all anarchy breaks loose as Archy tries to survive their assaults.

Alturus is the 57th keeper and has passed the mantle over to Archy, however, Archy must prove to the council of Sentinels that he is worthy of being its 58th keeper.  Along the way, Archy must uncover the secrets of the rug, or Shroud, and stay one step ahead of the Kurul.

I enjoyed reading this and watching the story unfold.  I was mystified with the rug and all the actions it can perform, let's just say it can do more than flying.  I thought the build up of Archy was great and the reader really comes to feel for his life situation.

I thought the Kurul sounded scary and formidable and I wouldn't want to have to put my wits up against their hunting skills.  There are actions that happen to the rug that act like a beacon in which the Kurul are able to zone in on and if you don't always know what they are, well, it can prove to be life threatening at times.

I couldn't help feeling at times that it was reminiscent of Harry Potter.  Archy and Harry's home life are somewhat similar in that they are both orphans being raised by people without their best interest at heart.

I would give The 58th Keeper a three and a half stars out of five.  I thought the pace was a little slow and the action scenes were too short in description and action.  I often had to backtrack to find the pace again as it went from slow to action and my mind was unprepared for the quick switches that occurred.  However, it is a very interesting read and I would love to read more by author, R.G. Bullet, I was not disappointed with this read and would definitely read more of R.G.'s work.

SYNOPSIS:
The 58th Keeper is the story of a boy called Archy Bass, who stumbles upon a mysterious and powerful relic. The moment he touches it, two warring forces race to find his whereabouts. One side thinks he’s simply too young and too inexperienced to keep it, and the other just want him dead. Hold on to your seats! The 58th Keeper is a roaring trip that takes the reader on the most wonderful and hair-raising scenes imaginable. R. G. Bullet pulls out all stops in his debut novel to deliver an incredible journey with unforgettable characters. This book will resonate with you for ages past the last line.

BOOK REVIEW: Served Cold by Chuck Waldron

Served Cold is a General Fiction Action/Advenutre.

As Walter Parker lay dying from cancer, he needs to tell the truth to his son, Sean, about his life and his true identity.

Sean was born Jason Marshall Powers-Viel; his parents, Jennifer and Marshall were very much in love but one thing stood in the way of their happiness.  Their fathers absolutely loathed each other and the young adults are told never to meet again.

Love happens in some of the strangest places and the two couldn't deny their love.  After Jenn gets pregnant and her father, Greg, learns of the affair, he becomes enraged and orders the beheading of Marshall.  After the package has been delivered, a vengeance like no other erupts and Jennifer, the baby she is carrying and her father's bodyguard, Rocky, are on the run; trying to stay two steps ahead of Skipper Veil and his henchmen.

After Jason is born, things go awry and Rocky is now on the run with an infant boy in his care.  For years they hid, changing their names and identities, however, Jason never knew of his beginnings, he truly believed himself to be the son of Rocky, who is now Walter.

Sean has much to consider as he absorbs this information about his past and he can feel the anger building within him.  And all Sean wants now...is revenge!

I thought Served Cold was a decent read.  I loved the way the story unfolds, through the memories of a dying man.  The shock as the story uncovers was intriguing and one couldn't help but continue with the story to see its outcome.

I enjoyed the story development and found myself wondering how Sean was going to deal with all that he had learned.  The confusion and distrust that surrounded him as he returned home to his loved ones and how he resolves those issues was believable.

I loved reading about all the Canadian content, being a Canadian myself, I knew relatively where the author was explaining as you sped through the streets trying to make get away from the chaos.  I loved reading about Toronto and her surrounding areas and thought it was great that the majority of the stories setting took place there.

I would give Served Cold a three and a half stars out of five.  While I enjoyed reading the story, I wasn't sure what the point of it all was.  I never understood the vendetta betwixt the two families, it was never properly explained, so I was left with an empty feeling as to why any of the events occurred.  I never really got to feel much for the couple, Jenn and Marshall, and wished there had been a bit more back story concerning the two.

The writing style is great and the author does have a way of capturing your attention and anyone who reads this would find it enjoyable.  There are mild expletives as are the  graphic situations found throughout the pages.

SYNOPSIS:
For two families, revenge served cold is not on the menu. Fuelled by a long-standing feud between the clan patriarchs, nothing less than hot-blooded vengeance will do... Called to the bedside of his dying father in Atlanta, a young man never expects what is waiting for him. In a hospital room the man who raised him, isn’t his father. Instead, he learns about his true parents and a feud that went horribly wrong. For years an uneasy balance of power between two powerful businessmen remained intact. But when one discovers his daughter is pregnant and the father is the son of his hated enemy, a deadly game tips the balance. In a violent power play, he orders her lover killed, sending a clear signal to his nemesis. In hot-blooded retaliation, his adversary arranges punishment, a hit on the other family, drawing a special target on the head of the most prized possession: the young daughter. A trusted bodyguard and driver – with a few shady connections of his own – escapes with the mother-to-be to the presumed safety and anonymity to await a birth, a new beginning. But no place on Earth is safe from all-out revenge. As assassins close in, Rocky narrowly escapes with newborn baby Sean and goes into hiding, creating a new identity. Disappearing into another world, he is able to raise Sean in peace for many years. Hearing this incredible story, a young man is drawn to the truth about his family roots and a growing need for some act of revenge, to seek atonement for the parents he never knew. What he discovers when he gets there will force him to make a choice: to succumb to a path set before him by the fate of his heritage, or turn away and forego the desire for vengeance pulsing in his veins?

BOOK REVIEW: The Realmsic Conquest by A. Demethius Jackson

The Realmsic Conquest:  The Candle of Crest is Fantasy Adventure.

The realms need a hero to challenge a quest
To help heal King Maebus they need the Candle of Crest
They search through the desert, They search through the plain
As the sun shines dimmer and dimmer each day.

Along with the challenge some fighting ensues
As the Army of Man quickly pursues.
Sometimes an enemy can be a friend too
As each ride the storms to allow harmony through.

Leoden, Normandy, Seku ride into fright
Take up the challenge to allow sunlight
Each gather armies to face their quests
Some of them live and some will meet death.

Along the way another problem needs action
When evil Damian survives his ancient infraction
He cares not for sunlight, chaos his reign
He'll bring death and destruction and cause everyone pain

The heroes must survive without any care
If they live or they die, King Maebus must be spared
Damian wishes to merge darkness with light
Thinking hes God he spares none of his might.

A thought they all share as the magic begins
The realmsic is theirs so that Damian can't win
Damian tries, as hard as he can
Will his magic be enough to wipe out the land?

I thought this was quite a remarkable way to share a story.  The rhyming prose wasn't something I am conditioned to read and at first I wasn't sure what to expect but I found myself easily reading along with the story.  You are drawn into the story and the plot that unveils itself as you continue along the journey.

I did enjoy the story but I seriously wanted to know more about the back story of most of the characters, like what happened to Saraya to make her wish to smite all the land?  Where did Damian come from?  How did any of the characters get to where they are?  So many questions are left unanswered that anyone who enjoys back story would find this a bit frustrating.

It was well-written with few editorial issues and I found myself re-writing some of the rhymes as I read along.  There was no expletives and the battles scenes are almost non-descriptive but the story still makes for a great read.

I would give The Realmsic Conquest a four out of five stars for the rhyming prose and being able to carry a plot without any major details.  Seriously though this would make for a GREAT series with more depth of plot and character.

SYNOPSIS:
Throughout its history, the kingdom known as the Realm has never known peace. From its establishment, it has possessed the gift of magic, which is a treasure that exists no other place in the world! As a result, the Realm has endlessly defended itself against conquerors, but now faces its greatest peril. As our heroes battle the wicked and unlock mysteries, they must also face overwhelming circumstances as they are guided by ancient lore on a quest to find the greatest treasure their kingdom will ever know... peace.

BOOK REVIEW: Tears In The Dust by Chuck Waldron

Tears In The Dust is a Contemporary Action Adventure.

The journey begins with the letter from a dying man to one of his dearest friends, Michael.  In the letter he states that he has killed two people, one he didn't know about and one he did and be makes a dying last wish to have his life story recorded for everyone to understand how certain events in ones life can shape who they become forever.

Michael, a procrastinator decides to fulfill the wish of Alec, a.k.a. Alestair Stuart Ferguson.  Alec, as a young man, wished to join the Spanish Army of 1937, to help keep the invaders away.  Being an American, it was against the law to do such, so he makes his way into Canada, across the Vermont border, so that he can enlist on the Canadian side.

What Alec doesn't realize is that someone is watching him and following him, Samuel T. Harrison, an unmoralistic detective for the Pinkerton Detective Agency; who scans the train stations looking for wanted criminals.  After getting a tip from the train master that Alec isn't who he claims to be, Sam decides to follow him and make his move when the timing is proper.  There are two things he hates in life, Alec and women and along the way, Alec manages to evade his capture.  The same cannot be said of the people who get in Sam's way, many of those people end up dead.

After Alec arrives in Spain, he is befriended by a Spanish girl named, Tamarah, with whom he falls in love with.  Things don't turn out as expected and Alec is left emotionally and physically drained as he attempts to fight for the Spanish.  After Sam catches up with Alec and begins to destroy his life, Alec has no choice but to disappear, but where will he go that Samuel won't find him and who has to suffer along the way?

I thought this was an extremely charged book and thought the plot was written with clarity and excitement.  This book is not for the faint of heart, there is a good deal of graphics and expletives that may not be suitable for those do not enjoy over-the-top adult situations.  However, most will enjoy the fast-pace of the narrative and the mystery surrounding the story, as well, the historical aspects dispersed throughout was equally enjoyable to read.

I thought the characters and the plot worked great together.  Samuel was a despicable man and he was written in perfect format with loathing and hatred, you couldn't help but dislike him and feel for Alec as he tries to out maneuver and evade Sam's tactics. I liked reading about the historic tidbits strewn through out and reading about Canada.

I would give Tears In The Dust a four out of five stars, while I enjoyed the read and couldn't put the book down, I found some of the of the story was TOO fast-paced and somewhat abrupt and it just stole a little bit from the overall effect of the story, however, it is a worthy read and if you enjoy a good mystery adventure, then you will definitely love this one!  I look forward to reading more from the author, Chuck Waldron

SYNOPSIS:
Tears in the Dust is a contemporary novel with gleams of hope intertwined within the despair of life. This is a story which serves to lift the reader up, only to take him back down into the darkness that lurks around the corners of one man’s life. Alestair “Alec” Ferguson beings a journey as a young man, off to enlist in the Spanish Civil War in 1937. Samuel T. Harrison is a dark and warped detective with a deep hatred of communism. He is the dark and violent nemesis who makes his way into the ranks of the detective agency where his boss uses his violent talents. People disappear whenever Harrison comes to town. The story chronicles Alec’s journey to Spain to fight in a war filled with personal loss and disillusionment. While in Spain, Alec falls in love with Tamarah, a convoy drive for the International Brigade. The war takes a heavy toll on Alec, and he learns just how high the cost of war can be. Disheartened, Alec fights on despite the damage done to his once strongly held beliefs. When Alec returns to his home in Vermont, seeking healing and the redemption of his ideals, what he finds there instead, causes him to flee to Canada and live the rest of his life under a false identity. But, no matter how far he goes, Alec cannot outrun Harrison, who pursues him through years and countries, only to catch up with him in a stunning conclusion to the story.

BOOK REVIEW: The Chronicles Of Zee & Zoey by Deborah Barnes

The Chronicles Of Zee & Zoey:  A Journey of the Extraordinarily Ordinary is a Literary Adventure.

Author, Deborah Barnes, chronicles her life and that of her cats via engaging and heart-warming stories.  Each chapter shared tells the journey of her cats and how they interact with everyone and their surroundings.

While there are many animals included in this story, it truly revolves around Zee, a huge male Maine Coon cat and Zoey, a highly-spirited Bengal female who bond together and share the show.

After a home renovation project, Zee becomes bored with his surroundings and aggressive with the other animals.  Deborah and Dan decide to adopt a Bengal female for Zee to have a companion.  What transgresses is a love that knows no bounds as the two become inseparable in their devotion to each other.

The reader shares the ups and the downs of keeping cats as companions.  They can be mischievious, devious, charming and loveable.  The story shared within these pages captures the life a of a cat in all its glorious detail and life.

I thought this was a enchanting read, filled with delight, laughter and sorrow.  I loved the characters of each of the cats and how the author shared them with the reader.  Oftentimes would could almost see the antics being shared and much giggling ensues after reading most of the passages found within.

I enjoyed the love gushing from the pages as the author conveys her special joy in the cat family.  I loved how each of the cats has their own personalities and the author captured them with great detail.  I've had a few remarkable cats in my lifetime and a few of the stories shared often lead me down a trip through memory lane.  Like my Bowser, he had six toes on each foot, could open doors, play fetch and loved to bring me some of the grossest things to show his "love" and "appreciation" for me, I am told it is an honour to have such gifts bestowed, but they always made me shriek, how I miss that boy of mine!

Each of the chapters are magical and descriptive and charming to read from front to cover.  I would give The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey a five out of five stars for being a perfect cat companion and this would make an excellent gift for the cat lover in your life.  Cats are truly hilarious creatures!

SYNOPSIS:
Combining a warm, humorous, and conversational style of writing with stunning photos and charming artwork, readers are immediately immersed into the world of Zee, a lovable male Maine Coon cat, and Zoey, a high-spirited female Bengal cat, as they share their amazing relationship and bond that formed between the two of them in The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey. What makes this story so compelling, is that I narrate the journey of the cats through the personal trials and tribulations of my own life. Readers will easily be able to relate to the many moments the I share and my spot on accuracy in understanding the many nuances of a cat is so realistic, one might think I was a cat myself!  You will be certain to smile and laugh on more than one occasion as you share this incredible journey with Zee and Zoey and learn the ultimate message they teach us - to embrace the ordinary in life and dare to make it extraordinary.

BOOK REVIEW: Dax Rigby, War Correspondent by John B. Rosenman

Dax Rigby, War Correspondent is a Science Fiction Adventure.

Dax Rigby works for TransWorld and has just landed on the very hot and humid planet of Aracadia.  His latest assignment is to cover the war between the Flyers, a strange bird-like praying mantis type creature and the Hoppers. a grasshopperish creature.  Upon first setting foot onto the planet, Dax realizes that something isn't right.

Reporting to Major Campbell, Dax is shocked when he realizes that she may be high on drugs and is acting very strange, talking about conspiracies and cover-ups.  The people on the planet looked drained and devoid of life and he is bewildered as to why none of this was in his reports.

After  befriending a Flyer within the first hour, Dax sets out to uncover the story.  Not wishing to believe the Major, Dax hopes that all will be well.  His love, Lexis is back home and the reason he is even on Arcadia is to appease her father, who pulled "strings" in order for Dax to report this mission.  However, things are beginning to look like Dax will never return and if he does, will he be arrested for the things he knows and uncovers?

I enjoyed the writing style of author, John Rosenman, and was pleased to be enraptured by his flow.  I have never read anything by the author and wasn't sure what to expect.  I liked how Dax was written with both a naivety and worldly-ness about him. I was impressed with the world building and could almost feel the oppressive heat.

I enjoyed the intrigue and how the story drew you further in as well as the comedic aspect that Dax shared via his thoughts to the situations surrounding him.  I found the descriptions of the people and the scenes to be climatic in their approach, you couldn't help but wonder what was causing such mishaps and depravity to grow.

I would give Dax Rigby, War Correspondent a four out of five stars.  It was a very good read but I felt that the romance aspect was a little flat, I just didn't get the feel that Lexis was an integral part of the story and I wasn't interested in reading about her as I was with the rest of the plot.  However, it is a very entertaining read, the story tie up was great and I am sure most science fiction fans will enjoy!

SYNOPSIS:
As WWIII rages on Earth, War Correspondent Dax Rigby travels to the savage planet Arcadia to investigate and report on the Western Alliance’s mission there. Soon, he fights not only to save two intelligent alien species from extinction, but also to rescue a dying human outpost threatened by a mysterious disease.

Facing assassination attempts, seduction from a passionate pilot, and his own mysterious powers of resurrection, Dax struggles to maintain his loyalties and complete his mission. The fate of two worlds hangs in the balance. Will he find a way to redefine both his identity and his destiny in time?

Things to Know Before Traveling in India

One must keep a few things in mind before traveling to India. India is a large country with a variety of geographical features which gives the country a variety of weather conditions at the same time. Different places have different weather conditions and temperatures so you must pack accordingly. India has a tropical climate and is usually warm. The summer season is usually quite hot and usually extends from April to June, the monsoon season or the rainy season begins in late June and stays till September while the winter season begins in November and is there till the end of February. The winter season is the best time to travel to India as the weather is most comfortable during that season.

Hotels in India are of various types, one can find luxury hotels as well as budget hotels. While hotels maybe easily available during the off-season, there is a great demand for hotel rooms during the season therefore it would be best to book hotels in advance. Most hotels India have online websites which give detailed descriptions of the facilities provided by them. One can easily book a hotel India room online as well. Hotel websites also advertises concierge’s or receptionist’s phone number, in case any additional arrangements need to be made for sightseeing  or any other purpose it would be best to call beforehand  and find out for sure, before booking, if  the hotel can take care of it.

If a traveler knows English it should not be very difficult to communicate as most Indians can speak English. One should be careful about their possessions while using public transport in India as pickpockets are not uncommon. Never keep all your money in one place and be very careful about your passport and visa. Be wise while making purchases on the street, street vendors usually mark their prices very high and one must bargain before making purchases.

Reputed shops have fixed prices and therefore no bargaining is possible. One can find worthy purchases to remember a trip both in shops as well as on the streets. Before making purchases in a place, you might take the advice of an Indian resident or even the concierge of a hotel India can give you some great tips on shopping in the city.

While traveling in India it is best to drink bottled water of reputed brands instead of the ones freely available with local shops. While Indian street food is very famous one must have it with a bit of caution. Different regions of India have different cuisines and different ways of cooking; traveling to a place would be incomplete without trying its cuisine. Indian food is often very spicy and hot which most foreigners are unaccustomed to therefore while experimenting with India cuisine it would be best to ask the waiter’s advice before placing the order.

Strange Things Occurring in Google Maps 2011

Listen, nearly everyone in the world could spend an entire day perusing Google Maps. It’s the fastest and least expensive way to ‘see the world,’ and is amazingly FUN!  Chances are you, just like everyone else in this world - has looked up your old addresses (and addresses of the exes) simply to see if the mysterious Google Maps has caught a chance shot of you sun bathing, or at least features your car parked in front of your house.   The truth is that with the randomness of Google Map photography often shot from satellites hovering in space, there are apt to be some pretty strange and amazing things captured by the camera responsible for documenting the digital globe.

Of course, there are crop circles.  And plenty of them.  Whether you believe that they were placed there by aliens are not, the bottom line is they are awesome to look at.  One in particular located in Speen, United Kingdom Berkshire is an awesome piece of artwork, so unique it had to be created by celestial beings.  Another picture from Stainborough – also in the United Kingdom is extremely vast and covers hundreds of acres.  And of course, one from the United States is a picture of Oprah’s head.  Does this mean she is the next celebrity to be abducted by aliens?

There are also quite a lot of pictures of beautiful sand art created by what must be budding artists hoping to get their canvasses picked up by Google satellites.  Additionally, National Geographic teamed up with Google Maps in 2011 and has created amazing imagery of animals and cultures all over the world in their natural state.  Whether you want to see a lone elephant in Chad – or see camels wandering through the desert, you are sure to get your scientific fix.

Speaking of science, Google maps has also captured some things that defy scientific thinking.  There are plenty of pictures of what seem to be angels, ghosts and other beings from the other side of life captured from around the globe.  But of course, even as Google Maps 2011 will label these things as angels, they also admit it could simply be a bug or smudge on the camera lens.  Interesting nonetheless.  You should check them out yourself; some may make a believer out of you.

Other things captured by Google Maps 2011 are just downright strange.  How about a ship that seems to be parked between two buildings in Hong Kong?  There is also a plane that seems to be parked on top of a building and a strange triangle located in Fort Kissimmee Florida that looks like it has a target laid out.  (But a target for what, is the question).  One picture from a lake in Amiens, France could have caught a glimpse of a gigantic sea creature, while on Mongolia – out in the middle of nowhere, there is an obvious drawing of something.  (No one knows for sure what it is, or what it means!)

Essentially Google Maps 2011 has become so adept at taking pictures; there are endless possibilities for finding amazing sights and strange occurrences within the maps.  Luckily, some sites including Google Maps, will allow you to mark and document them if you happen to run across something mysterious.  A word to the wise however.  If you are planning to take a closer look at the President or Vice Presidents residence (or military operations), those views have all been pixilated.  Enjoy finding more strange things at Google Maps.
