An Environment for Bullies~!!

An Environment for Bullies

It has become evident, now more than ever, that one of the biggest deterrent to a child learning, is the very real problem of bullying. Children cannot learn when their focus is on survival and not an upcoming spelling test. In fact, any schoolwork pales in comparison to the threat a child feels every day when he walks into the cafeteria for lunch.

The Scope of the Problem
Recent statistics reveal that nearly 3 million students every year are bullied by roughly 2 million students playing the role as bully. In fact 1 in 7 students, from the time they enter school to when they graduate some 12 years later is either a bully or has been victimized by one. Strong evidence suggest that the most common motivation behind school shootings are revenge from being bullied. A staggering 87% of school shooting and other forms of violence is believed to be because of some form of bullying! In fact murderers are twice as likely as their victims to have been bullied, and finally, an estimated 280 thousand students all across the US are bullied each and every month. You cannot draw a more direct line from bullying to the problems children’s face in the school educational system.

The New Problem of Bullying
Back when many of us were children, the problem of bullying thankfully stopped once we were safely home from school. People do not write bullying letters or throw bricks with notes attached through their victim’s bedroom windows. Unfortunately our children today are vulnerable to bullies in a much different way. Bullies now have access to our children through the internet; a practice known as cyber bullying . Children today have access to each other through various social media platforms like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Pinterest, Google Plus, and Skype. Children also use basic webcams as well. While the prevalence of cell phones has also made our children more vulnerable to bullies, it seems that bullying pretty much skipped over that form of bullying in preference to online forms of bullying often called cyber stalking. Thanks to the advances of technology in our world today bullies have access to their victims 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They can now attack their victims whenever and wherever and school administrators, teachers, parents, and police have been at a loss when it comes to preventing this enormous scourge on our society. If children cannot successfully regroup back home and get away from their tormentors, what can they do? Only 1 in 4 teachers see bullying as a real problem and therefore only report bullying a paltry 4% of the time even though a staggering 90% of children grades 4th through 8th grade report being bullied! Children and guns do not mix, especially when you throw bullying into the mix. Some studies even report as high as 75% of all school violence is due to bullying.

Forms of Bullying
Not everyone recognizes bullying when it is happening, and part of that is due to the fact that even though it is still very serious, not all bullying is so obvious and sticking another child’s head in the trash can in the hall. There are 4 types of bullying.

  • Verbal: This can be making threats, calling names, or anything designed to make another person feel intimidated and afraid.

  • Physical: This can be as mild as a shove in the hall or a swirly to violence with weapons or just fists. It’s the most obvious but not always the most serious form of abuse a child can be made to endure.

  • Social: This can be as seemingly benign as leaving someone out of games or other group activities or deliberately ignored. It can also be in the form of spreading nasty rumors about the victim. This is a very common form of bullying and can be severely damaging to the victims.

  • Cyber: This is using technology like chat rooms, instant messaging, instagrams, emails, and pictures to humiliate, coerce, and embarrass fellow students.

Prevention Starts in the Home
If you expect to be able to bully proof your child, you’re going to have to start before he/she begins school. The more you can do at home to create a strong independent child the better. The more you can do to build up his self-esteem the harder it will be for some bully to tear him down again. Keeping the lines of communication open between yourself and your child is important. The better a child feels about himself the less likely he will allow a bully to make him feel bad about himself. Enrolling you child in self-defense classes is a great idea. Do your research so you can find a school that shares some of your beliefs and views on handling school bullies. Any karate school you send your child too should not just teach the physical moves; that is but a part of the whole picture. Your child should be taught, and modeled respect for others and themselves. If they respect their minds and bodies the less likely they will allow others to disrespect themselves. While you cannot stop all bullying, you can lessen the damage it can do to your child.

If your child complains to you about bullying it’s important that you believe him. You can doubt all you want in your mind, but your child should only see you the protector that believes in him. Find out what is happening to your child and what he/she expects you to do about it. You may find that your child wants to handle things on his own and just wants your support. You might also find that you need to step in and exert your parental control and make sure the bullying STOPS immediately. Above all, listen to your child.

The Pain Ends Here
If you discover your child is one of the millions of victims of bullying it’s important that you send a strong message to your child. You must believe and act immediately. You can say you love and support your children all you want but you have to show it. The moment you find out, you need to make a plan of action. Many children do not want their parent’s overt involvement in their help. They do not want a knight in shining armor to swoop in and rescue them. Most kid’s school reputation could not take that much of a hit. Ask your child if he has an idea of what he would like you to do, then read between the lines. You know your child best and what he says may not exactly be what he wants. Trust your gut instinct and act on it.

BOOK REVIEW: Shut Up by Anne Tibbets

Shut Up

Author:  Anne Tibbets
Paperback:  118 pages
Publisher:  Premier Digital Printing (April 15, 2012)
Language:  English

Mary's older sister, Gwen, has royally screwed up her life.  Not only is Gwen pregnant at seventeen, but she's also decided to marry The Creep who knocked her up.

Now Mary is powerless to stop her family from imploding.  Her parents are freaking out, and to top it off, The Creep has a gross fascination with Mary while Gwen enjoys teasing her to tears for sport.

Despite her brother's advice to shut up, Mary can't keep her trap closed and manages to piss off Mom so much it comes to blows.  Mary doesn't know what to do, and all her attempts to get help are rejected.

When she finally plans her escape, she fails to consider how it could destroy them all.

I found Shut Up to be an interesting read in that I felt compelled to finish the story about Mary and her dysfunctional family.  I found the writing style of Anne Tibbets to be genuine in its intent and her flow was remarkable.

I found the character of Mary to be very personable and I felt the need to finish her story as you read the escalation in bullying that she encompasses from her older sister, Gwen.  Gwen is a despicable girl, who is never happy and is always complaining and calling Mary names.  The family becomes raveled into Gwen's torment as each family member begins to use Mary as their scapegoat and emotional punching bag.

Twelve year old girls are already dealing with a lot emotionally and when Mary begins to feel betrayed by those who love her, she decides to take her own life.  However, before this occurs, Gwen moves out and life returns to normal.  Everyone in the house can feel the stress that has been removed and everyone becomes their normal selves.

Then the dreaded occurs and Gwen returns home and within a short period of time, life resumes to the negative mess it was before.  This time though, Mary cannot keep up with the pressure and she resorts to her "shell".  Her inner demons are urging her to either run away from home or take her own life and without anyone to turn to, Mary must decide her fate on her own.

I would give Shut Up a three and a half stars out of five.  While I enjoyed the read, I wasn't sure of the importance of telling us Mary's point of life from Paul's angle.  There were a few chapters given in his viewpoint and it lead me to believe that Paul was going to have a bigger role in the story, which I failed to see.  I would've liked to have seen the book from either everyone's point of view or just Mary's.  However, it was a decent read, well~written and believable from beginning to end.

BOOK REVIEW: Chrystallia and The Source of Light by P.M. Glaser

Chrystallia and the Source of Light

Author:  P.M. Glaser
Hardcover:  296 pages
Publisher:  Greenleaf Book Press (October 1, 2011)
Language:  English

In this beautifully illustrated children's fantasy story, two siblings struggle against sharp-edged, bedazzling foes to arrive at a place of knowing, to which they and everything belong.

It's Christmas, but thirteen-year-old Maggie and her ten-year-old brother Jesse are anything but joyful. Their mother is dying, the bank is about to foreclose on their home, and very soon, everything about their lives will change.

In an adventure that takes them below the earth's surface to a realm inhabited by crystalline life forms - some of which seem to have been spawned from the children themselves - the sister and brother discover the strength of their bond, the breadth of their courage, and the awesome power of love.

Amid dazzling displays of colours and shapes, Maggie and Jesse must move through crystal planes and canyons as they do battle with King Bloo, the princes Red and Orange, and Holy Clear. Jesse learns from Princess Amethyst that the thing that scares him the most can waken him to his greatest strength. Sharing his secret with Maggie ultimately leads the two to a place of forgiveness, called home.

Chrystallia was a very good read and it captivated me from beginning to end.  I finished this book in under two hours which shows you how great it was.

I loved the imaginative world of Chrystallia and all the different characters involved.  It was very interesting to see that all the people of Chrystallia were made out of gems, minerals and rocks and each had the personality that corresponded to their type.

I also enjoyed all the information shared about each of the crystals, gems and rocks.  The author very cleverly included the descriptions and new age properties of each.  Tourmaline or Torri, she was a rainbow of colours who had a southern accent and was almost hippy in her free love, friendship and happiness.  Pyrope, a red crystal garnet, who brought faith and light to the group or Scheelite, a rare yellow crystal from China, who shared her insight and balance.

Each of the characters has their own accent and character and they all worked together to bring a really memorable read.

Jesse is a believer, he believes in everything and knows they will find their way out of the underground.  He is hoping to find a cure for his mother's health and believes the crystals hold the answer.  Maggie has become disillusioned and doesn't believe in anything she cannot see, she hates her brother and wishes her mother wasn't dying.

Together the two must come to terms with their lives, who there are and where they are meant to be.  Chrystallia is filled with many deep and meaningful insights and the meta~physical aspect of the book is truly a groovy experience.

I would give Chrystallia and the Source of Light a four and a half stars out of five, I felt there could have been a load more humour strewn throughout the pages.  There were brief excerpts from certain characters like Gneiss and Torri and I felt that with a bit more of wit from some of the characters would have made the book fantastic.  Oh and if you cry, the ending is VERY touching~!!

BOOK REVIEW: Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fischer

Zombies Don't Cry:  A Living Dead Story ~ Book One

Author:  Rusty Fischer
Reading Level:  Ages 12 & Up
Paperback:  300 pages
Publisher:  Medallion Press (May 1, 2011)

In the sleepy town of Barracuda Bay, Maddy Swift leads the life of a fairly typical teenager, but while attending a party one night, Maddy is struck by lightning and awakens to realize she has been reanimated and turned into a zombie.

While becoming acquainted with her new "lifestyle", Maddy stumbles upon two unexpected undead chaperones, fellow students, Dane and Chloe, who begin to teach her the ways of zombie life, including defending the populace from Zerkers~the bad zombies.

Together, on Prom Night, the three teens must ultimately defend Barracuda Bay High from an all~out zombie Armageddon.

I love the writing style of author, Rusty Fischer, it is easy to read, often times comical and his main characters are heart~warming to follow.

I loved Maddy and her awakening into the zombie world, where she is unsure of her next move but glad to have her Zombie Guide in case she screws it all up.  I love her honesty and her approach to zombies, from renting B~grade zombie movies to just winging it as she goes along, it was enjoyable to this reader.

I loved that zombies have been given personalities and a can fall in love, get angry, worry...they just cannot cry.  I love the different classes between the zombies, with zombies now being those who have died by a certain circumstance and have found themselves reanimated versus those who have been bitten, such as, zerkers.  It often makes for a comical outlook with some gore thrown in for good measure.

I love zombies and would read anything on them and Zombies Don't Cry is worthy of four out of five stars for its genre.  I was quite impressed with the story, the characters and the new classifications of zombies that Fischer has incorporated.

I'm still out on the whole Guardian/Sentinel aspect of things.  I wish Fischer had given a bit more back story into these two entities as it was their involvement that left the most holes for me.  However, I'd love to read more by Rusty Fischer, he makes zombies good~!!

COMIC REVIEW: Elric: The Balance Lost Vol. 1 (Michael Moorcock) by Chris Roberson

Elric:  The Balance Lost Vol. 1 ~ Michael Moorcock by Chris Roberson and Illustrated by  Francesco Biaginia.  Afterword by Neil Gaiman.

  • Paperback: 128 pages
  • Publisher: BOOM! Studios; Original edition (February 7, 2012)
  • Language: English
Signs appear throughout the Multiverse that the Cosmic Balance is in peril, and the Eternal Champion is caught in the crosshairs!

Across worlds, Elric, Hawkmoon and Corum begin to face the force that threatens to overpower them all, while Eric Beck, a modern-day video game designer, must acknowledge that his reoccurring dreams of a Pale Prince aren’t all in his head...

Join New York Times bestseller Chris Roberson (SUPERMAN, iZOMBIE, STAN LEE'S STARBORN) as he teams up with legendary fantasy author Michael Moorcock to bring Elric back to comic books in an original ongoing series!

See why Neil Gaiman called Moorcock “my model for what a writer was” while Warren Ellis said he is one of the “eight core sites in my creative genome.”

The cosmic balance is in disorder across the galaxy and three avatars or incarnations of the Eternal Champion are being tapped to fight whatever is causing the turmoil and struggle.

Eric Beck, a games designer, in our time, constantly dreams of events that occur in other dimensions.  He is slowly coming to realize that his dreams and the three avatars may be connected.

The story is a build up for the world that is being created, which I am sure, will feed a long and successful comic book series.

My son was most impressed with this comic, as was I.  The graphics are beautifully illustrated and the story is shared in a very engaging way.  The hero's are worthy of reading and likeable and you cannot help but want to know of Elric's fate, but, it will take time for his story to unfold as you follow this new comic book series, featuring Elric and the fate of mankind.

I would give Elric:  The Balance Lost a four out of five stars.  I did find Eric was a little cartoony in his overall creation but was very impressed with the battle scenes and the depictions of Elric as the Pale Prince and Hawkmoon was exactly how I had pictured him.

BOOK REVIEW: Shattered by Melody Carlson

Shattered by Melody Carlson

Paperback: 208 pages
  • Publisher: NavPress (April 15 2011)
  • Language: English

Cleo Neilson is the only one who knows why her mother was in a seedy part of town that one night, but she's determined to keep the secret that's breaking her heart.

Walk through this teen fiction novel of grief, guilt, faith, and forgiveness.

You won't forget the journey.

Cleo's best friend, Lola, is moving away and Cleo wants to spend their last weekend together at a Christian rock concert being held in the city.  However, both of Cleo's parents are busy and cannot drive them and Cleo's mom is quite adament that she is not to travel there on her own.

Cleo is exasparated and tired of her "helicopter mom" protecting and smothering her, so she makes up a story and both her and Lola head into the concert.  When Cleo's mom hears of this, she heads into the city to find her daughter and bring her home, however, she never makes it and is murdered.

When Cleo learns of her mother's death, she is left with much guilt and despair as she realizes her mother was only in the city to bring Cleo home.  Cleo does not share with her family her thoughts and they begin to eat at Cleo, quickly changing her personality and raising concerns from those around her.

Cleo must come to terms with her involvement with her mothers death and by the grace of God, accept and forgive herself.

I was intrigued with Cleo's story, I felt the author did a remarkable job expressing a delicate topic, the death of another as a result of your own actions.  I felt that Cleo's downward spiral into depression was well written and you come to feel for Cleo and her life.

I was impressed with the spiritual affirmations found within the pages, blending with the story without being too preachy.  Cleo is a strongly written character that many her age can relate to, especially if you have lost a parent to death.  Author, Melody Carlson, explains the stages of grief without the reader even realizing it occurring.

The people surrounding Cleo all shared in the story, enriching it further by their actions and their deeds.  Each person concerned for Cleo in their own way; trying to figure out the truth behind her depressive state while surrounding her with love and compassion.

I would give Shattered a four and a half out of five stars.  I shared in Cleo's journey and I cried for her heartache and if you like books on social issues having to deal with death and grief, then you will enjoy reading this tale.

Vamplayers by Rusty Fischer

Vamplayers is a YA Paranormal Fantasy.

  • Reading level: Ages 12 and up
  • Paperback: 384 pages
  • Publisher: Medallion Press; Original edition (December 13, 2011)
  • Language: English
When Lily Fielding is turned, she has no idea what is happening or why, all she knows is that Rick Springfield's "Jesses Girl" is playing in the background as her and her mother are overcome by Vampires.  As she watches her mother try to devour her, Lily prepares for her death but is saved by the Saviours and becomes a Sister at the Afterlife Academy of Exceptionally Dark Arts.

There are two paths one can follow at the school, either become a Saviour or a Sister.  Everyone wants to be a Saviour, a select group of people who hunt and destroy vampires.  However, Lily is just a Sister of The Sisterhood of Dangerous Girlfriends and to add to the insult, she's third sister to Cara and Alice and truly has no say in any of the adventures the girls find themselves upon.

When the girls are given their next mission, going undercover in a secluded, posh high school, the girls believe the job will be an easy one as they plan their identities.  However, before the first day of school is over, Lily is on her own as her sisters get wrapped up in Bianca, the socialite who has it all while Lily follows Tristan, the Vamplayer looking to turn the whole school into a bloodfest.

Lily is unsure who to trust and she cannot figure out why her sisters are acting weird, almost like they have forgotten their mission and who they are.  Lily believes Tristan may have something to do with this and continues to bait him, however, along the way, Lily's own feelings come into play and she must come to realize that what she has come to believe all along, may not be what it seems.

When Lily finds herself fighting a Royale vampire of the oldest blood, she must use all of her skills and wits, for her sisters are not there to help her and there is no way to contact The Saviours to come and bail them all out.

I quite enjoyed this read and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a YA Vampire love story.  The outcome was great and the author doesn't leave the reader hanging with impossible and unanswered  questions, everything is tied up nicely and leaves the reader wishing for more.

I enjoyed the writing style of author, Rusty Fischer, it was fresh and comedic in places.  I found the dialogue enjoyable as well as the characters.  I read this book in just a few hours, it has enough to keep the reader glued to the pages if you are reader of paranormal YA and I hope to read more from the Sisters.

Though I figured out who the vampires were, it was still a great unfolding of events, the predictability didn't offend me as much as it usually does, for the writing style/technique more than makes up for anything that could be lacking to the reader.

I would give this a 4.5 out of five stars, I thought that it would have been more beneficial to have had more background information on Lily, Alice and  Cara, I just didn't feel for Alice and Cara as I felt I should have and I believe it was because I didn't know much about why they were there or what makes them tick.  I'm reading Rusty Fischer's "Zombies Don't Cry" and I must say he is a new YA paranormal favourite author of mine.  Keep up the groovy work Rusty~!!

SYNOPSIS:
At the Afterlife Academy of Exceptionally Dark Arts, Lily Fielding is a measly trainee who dreams of one day becoming a Savior—those who visit vampire-infested high schools and put down the undead with their deadly crossbows. When Lily and her classmates Alice and Cara begin their latest assignment, it seems like just another run-of-the-mill gig: they’re to simply spot the Vamplayer—part vampire, part player—identify the popular girl he’s set his sights on, and befriend her before the Vamplayer can turn her to do his bidding. Before long, however, the Vamplayer sets his sights on Lily's friends, and she is left to face the threat alone while protecting her friends from the dark forces she has sworn to resist.

BOOK REVIEW: The Star-Crossed Saga: Protostar by Braxton A. Cosby

The Star-Crossed Saga:  Protostar is a YA Romantic Christian Science Fiction.

Civil war is approaching the Torrian Alliance as they strive to kill the "star-children" in order to suppress the evil spreading amongst the galaxy.  Prince William has been ordered by his father, King Gregario, to hunt down a female star-child in order to restore honour and faith to his family.

When William meets seventeen year old Sydney, the star-child, he becomes to learn that she isn't an evil entity and falls in love with her.  They spend much time getting to know one another until the Alliance sends out another party to deal with Sydney.  Without her death, life as William knows it will end and order must be made to right in the Alliances view.

I found the The Star-Crossed Saga to be an okay read.  I wasn't overly fond of the characters and couldn't really relate to them.  I found them to be stiff, overly formal and more often than not, the dialogue fell flat.

I did like Sydney and found her the only focus in the story worthy of reading.  I thought her innocence was a delightful asset to the plot, as she has no clue how she affects others off planet.  I liked how she interacted with the other characters she comes into contact with.

I also enjoyed the back story of the plot, how and why this occurs was an interesting read and was befitting of the story.  I also liked how the author was able to keep from the reader realizing who was actually doing good and who were the evil ones.   He managed to keep the intrigue interesting which also helps keep the story moving forward.

I thought William to be a dry, a tad boring and way too formal for my liking.  I just couldn't connect with him or his plight.  I found his dialogue dull and several times I had to put the book down in order to return.

I did like the blend of romance with the science fiction but thought there was more emphasis on the love story than science fiction so any diehard sci-fi fans are not going to enjoy this book as much, unless you like romance novels, then you will find this blend to be intriguing.  Author, Braxton A. Crosby, calls this Sci-Fance, though I think Sci-Mance is more in tune to the story.

I would give The Star-Crossed Saga:  Protostar a three out of five stars.  I can see potential in the author if he loosens up his dialogue a bit and finds a way to express his descriptives in a more flowing manner.  I found the story lacked the momentum it needed to really flourish however, I would definitely give this a chance and look forward to more from Braxton A. Crosby, his potential is there with a bit more experience under his belt!

SYNOPSIS:
It Starts With Choice!

What would you choose: love or irrefutable duty?

On the brink of Civil War, the Torrian Alliance continues with its mission to obliterate Star-children across the universe in order to suppress an intergalactic evil. Following the recommendations of his Council, King Gregorio Derry has agreed to send his only son on a mission to restore honor to his family. Bounty Hunter Prince William Derry has crossed thousands of light-years to planet Earth, in order to fulfill this age old prophetic practice. The quiet days of Madisonburg, Tennessee are officially over as Sydney Elaine now knows the full meaning of the phrase Be careful what you wish for when she is confronted by this strange visitor. As an unforeseeable event delays his assassination, William decides to study his target more closely and begins to form a connection with Sydney that challenges his inner being. But this conflict is the least of his problems, as a conspiracy back on his home planet Fabricius threatens the lives of those he loves and his father s royal legacy. Along with that, he must unravel a hidden menace here on Earth that seeks to secure a vested interest that threatens both his and Sydney s safety. Will William be able to complete his mission or will he choose love, sacrificing everything he stands for?

Mishap & Chaos
This is the second installment in my Mishap Trilogy and it’s about twin sisters, Grasiella and Tatiana. Latina girls who seem to be normal teenage girls, with normal teenage crushes, I said “seem to be” because in reality they are two of the most gifted and powerful girls in the world. The problem is they don’t know how special and unique they are. They also don’t realize that their heritage goes back thousands of years and spans not just continents but solar systems as well.

Tatiana Najera
Youngest of the twins, she writes the music and lyrics and is the lead singer in her band Onyx Quartz. She always travels with her guitar and finds inspiration for her music in the places and people she meets.

She has always felt over shadowed by her twin who seems to excel in just about everything she does, where as Tatiana lives in the moment and lives a more carefree life.

Although Tatiana is about to discover that her magic is just as strong as her twin and that she has her own gifts.

Grasiella Najera
Oldest of the twins, she is very active with martial arts and track and field. The craft of magic comes easy to her and she is a diligent student.

While visiting her grandmother in Hawaii, she has found her time spent discovering the truth about family secrets and how they can affect all of their lives.

In the process of learning about their unique heritage, Grasiella and her twin may end up saving not only their own lives, but the fates of everyone they had come to care about.

Twins Grasiella & Tatiana are hated and feared by the magical race to which they belong.

Deep within the Hawaiian Islands is a hidden danger an island witch who wants nothing more then to end the line of Pele, the fire goddess. Her influence has breached Pele’s inner circle.

SPOTLIGHT: Shevi Arnold author of Toren the Teller's Tale

About the Book...

Toren The Teller’s Tale
By Shevi Arnold

Have you ever been swept away by a story? If you have, you know the magic of the storyteller--and you know that magic is real. That is seventeen-year-old Toren's magic . . . but is she brave enough to accept the power that lies within her?

When Toren returns home, her little sister, Noa, is full of questions. Noa demands to know why Toren wakes only at night; what causes her almost constant pain; and above all, why, after completing her apprenticeship, she has decided not to become a wizard.  To answer, Toren weaves a tale about a journey that leads her to discover the greatest source of magic in her world--herself.  It is a revelation that comes  at a high price.  Through her darkest years, Toren finds solace and strength in the stories she tells.  But her greatest tale is not yet finished.  Together with Noa, she sets out on a new adventure. And in the end, she must choose: will she continue to cling to her dream of an ordinary life, or will she dare to let her own magic shine?

TOREN: THE TELLER’S TALE is more than an inspirational fantasy. It is a philosophical tale about the enchantment of literature, because in Toren's parallel world there is no greater power than the magic of storytelling.

TOREN: THE TELLER’S TALE is intended to be the first book in the Toren the Teller series.

About the Author...

Shevi Arnold started telling stories when she was just a kid looking for a way to pass the time on the long, boring ride to school. Not long after that, she started telling herself her own stories--letting them play through her mind, like favorite TV shows--as she was about to fall asleep or whenever she was bored. One night when she was seventeen, she encountered Toren for the very first time. The magical storyteller left quite an impression. But Shevi didn't have the time to write Toren's story down. She had degrees to earn in college, and when she was through with that, she had her work in newspapers and magazines, her marriage, and her family to keep her busy. Then in 2001 Shevi returned to the USA in search of a better education for her autistic son, and she had to leave her job and  her old life behind. She had only ever worked as a writer and an illustrator, and she couldn't work full-time for newspapers or magazines anymore. What was she going to? She sat down and began to write Toren the Teller's Tale. Since then Shevi has written six other novels for kids and young adults, but after thirty years simmering in her mind and countless edits, she considers this novel her greatest masterpiece.

Toren closed her eyes. “So, you want to know who I am,” she said. “It seems a simple question: ‘Who are you?’ And we always give it such simple answers. ‘Who am I?
I’m Toren. I’m Noa. I’m the eldest daughter of Omri the vintner. I’m the youngest. . . .’

Of course, these answers aren’t true. They are simple, quick and easy, while the truth is none of those things. Even a mouse has a story as grand as the sky.

“You want to know why I’m not a wizard. The simple answer is I do not wish to be. But you want the truth: you want to hear my tale. Where should I begin?"

In Shevi's Own Words...

Writing the Rainbow

Since I've decided to e-publish my own work, I've been reading many books on successful self-publishing, like Smart Self-Publishing: Becoming an Indie Author, and marketing, like ProBlogger:Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income and Author101: Bestselling Secrets from Top Agents. Nowadays it's all about platforms and branding, which are basically nice, tidy little boxes readers can put writers in, so they know what to expect when they buy one of that writer's books or check out her blog.

That's all very well and good for someone who just writes picture books, romantic ghost stories for teens, illustrated books for middle graders, epic fantasy for girls, or funny, geeky ironic-vampire Science-Fiction novels. But what do you do if you write all of that and more?

Ask me what my favorite color is, and I'll tell you it's rainbow. It's not that I'm indecisive and can't choose a favorite color. I honestly like a variety of colors at the same time. Blue is nice. Red is nice. Pink is nice. Yellow is nice. Green is nice. Purple is nice. But I wouldn't buy a painting that was all one color, and I wouldn't want to paint something that was all one color. That's a wall, not a work of art.

So how does a writer create a brand when her favorite color is rainbow? How can I help you stick me in a nice, tidy box so you can know what to expect when you visit my blog or buy one of my books? I've been puzzling over this question for the last few weeks, and it wasn't until this morning that I came up with the answer: the rainbow is my brand.

And in that rainbow you'll find a variety of colors like none you've ever seen before. Colors to entertain and inspire. Colors to make you laugh, think, dream, fall in love, and embrace your inner magic or your inner geek.

I hope that somewhere in my many mixed-up worlds, you’ll find a color that you like.

BOOK REVIEW: The Sylvan Horn by Robert Redinger

The Sylvan Horn Book One of the Sylvan Chord is a Young Reader Action Adventure.

Efkin is a young Elven Lord who joins a quest to hunt for the Sylvan Horn and break the Runes that are about to destroy the world.

The Elves have always been protected in their realm from outsiders but chaos is ruling and the boundaries that once protected the Elves are failing.  Trolls have been entering the forest and killing all they come across, the Elves wish to broker peace but the Trolls want no part of it and a battle ensues.  It is there that they learn that the Trolls are able to call upon magic, a very rare and uncommon event.  Trouble is brewing and its up to Efkin and his party to find out who is behind the Troll advancements.

Following the puzzles set before him, Efkin leads his group to the one place Elves are not able to go or they will die.  The Humans have the Horn and it lies hidden in a mountain of iron and only those brave enough will journey beyond the borders in order to return the balance.

Along the journey, Efkin learns much about himself and the Horn, as the mysteries unfold, Efkin is lead to the power that is behind the upheaval and the truths that lie before him.

I thought this was a decent read, it had some great characters and the plot is a believable one.  I thought the book at times was written rather quickly without enough detail to the situation and the reader was left to reread certain passages to make certain they understood them.  Other times the books pace was great and you were immersed into the story and felt the need to finish the quest with Efkin and his group.

I liked how sinister the land of Humans with their death giving iron was written.  I enjoyed reading about the worries and wonders of Efkin as he drew closer to his destination as well as learning the history of the races and their relationship to iron.

I liked the elder Elves and the powers that they had, however, I found they always showed up when they were needed and the reader wasn't giving much in their back story which made me feel like they were an outside piece of the story which didn't allow for their natural blending into the story.

I would give The Sylvan Horn a three and a half stars out of five.  The story does pick up and slow down about halfway and you don't feel as rushed as you read it.  I would've liked to have seen more magic and more back story involving the characters; I didn't really get a feel for many of those who were involved with the plot.  However, I can see great potential in this series and would love to continue reading to find out the final outcome of Efkin and his quest of the Slyvan Chord.

SYNOPSIS:
Before the days of men, there were elves. In a time they were great and powerful, the first dwellers, the brightest ray of dawn upon the earth. They brought light and music to the world and every breeze that stirs and wave that crashes still echoes with the wonder of the fair folk.

But a foulness is brewing in the east, where men deal in sorcery. They summon dire forces, unleashing a terrible power into the world. And the elves, once immortal, now fade from the earth. But knowing that all sorcery comes from Runes that were carved ages ago, Efkin, a young elf lord, races to find and destroy the hidden Runes before all is lost. He sets out to recover the horn of his ancestors that long ago summoned the forces that shaped the world. Only the horn has the power to break the Runes. He journeys into the east, but comes too close to the heart of sorcery and does not dare blow the horn. If he is tainted by the poison of the Runes the horn will sound a ruinous note that could spell the end of the earth.

BOOK REVIEW: The Realmsic Conquest by A. Demethius Jackson

The Realmsic Conquest:  The Candle of Crest is Fantasy Adventure.

The realms need a hero to challenge a quest

They search through the desert, They search through the plain
As the sun shines dimmer and dimmer each day.

Along with the challenge some fighting ensues
As the Army of Man quickly pursues.
Sometimes an enemy can be a friend too
As each ride the storms to allow harmony through.

Leoden, Normandy, Seku ride into fright
Take up the challenge to allow sunlight
Each gather armies to face their quests
Some of them live and some will meet death.

Along the way another problem needs action
When evil Damian survives his ancient infraction
He cares not for sunlight, chaos his reign
He'll bring death and destruction and cause everyone pain

The heroes must survive without any care
If they live or they die, King Maebus must be spared
Damian wishes to merge darkness with light
Thinking hes God he spares none of his might.

A thought they all share as the magic begins
The realmsic is theirs so that Damian can't win
Damian tries, as hard as he can
Will his magic be enough to wipe out the land?

I thought this was quite a remarkable way to share a story.  The rhyming prose wasn't something I am conditioned to read and at first I wasn't sure what to expect but I found myself easily reading along with the story.  You are drawn into the story and the plot that unveils itself as you continue along the journey.

I did enjoy the story but I seriously wanted to know more about the back story of most of the characters, like what happened to Saraya to make her wish to smite all the land?  Where did Damian come from?  How did any of the characters get to where they are?  So many questions are left unanswered that anyone who enjoys back story would find this a bit frustrating.

It was well-written with few editorial issues and I found myself re-writing some of the rhymes as I read along.  There was no expletives and the battles scenes are almost non-descriptive but the story still makes for a great read.

I would give The Realmsic Conquest a four out of five stars for the rhyming prose and being able to carry a plot without any major details.  Seriously though this would make for a GREAT series with more depth of plot and character.

SYNOPSIS:
Throughout its history, the kingdom known as the Realm has never known peace. From its establishment, it has possessed the gift of magic, which is a treasure that exists no other place in the world! As a result, the Realm has endlessly defended itself against conquerors, but now faces its greatest peril. As our heroes battle the wicked and unlock mysteries, they must also face overwhelming circumstances as they are guided by ancient lore on a quest to find the greatest treasure their kingdom will ever know... peace.

Read the Excerpt...
Forcing my eyes to open, I found myself outside the Cradlehack. I was standing in Faris’s arms, my head against his chest, my fingers entwined in his black vest. It was a smooth fabric that felt like silk. A cloth no one had worn outside of ceremonies since before the Tidal Years. This boy was no common citizen. His earthy-sweet smell made me feel hypnotically safe, as we stood among the crowd fleeing down the hillside. He lifted my chin, stared in my eyes. But this wasn’t some dumb player’s move.
No, a mysterious thing stirred behind his silvery-gray eyes.
“Feel better, Chela?” he asked. I nodded.
“Thanks for helping me,” I said, still fighting a light head. Still afraid the dreaded black blobs lingered somewhere around us. Somewhat ashamed I’d spoken so horribly to him moments ago.
“You probably shouldn’t do that,” he said.
“Do what?”
“Thank me.”
“Why? Because I caught you using alchemy? That’s what your kind does. Make magic in the shadows, right?” I said.
His left eye ticked. The girl in the hoodie had called him a Caducean. Could it be possible? Father told me Caduceans were a mythical group—demon slayers from a time long gone. Yet, here I stood with a boy who didn’t deny my claim.
Around us, fewer people were leaving the Shack. They paid no attention to the two idiots standing and staring at each other. Did Jalen and Lexa make it out safely? They were taking forever to reach me.
Did I really want them to find me?
“They’ll call me, now, and make me a witness against you. I’m sorry, but I already have too many problems. So I—I have to tell the truth,” I said.
“That won’t be a problem.” Faris smiled, a catchy one that lit his face up. I couldn’t decide whether it was angelic or downright wicked. Just like I couldn’t remember where I’d ever heard an accent like his. What kind was it? Old southern? Old English? Irish? It sounded like a mix of all three, but with a deep timbre, making him sound god like. “In a few minutes, you won’t remember me or any of this.”
“Really? How do you figure that?” I asked, heart racing.
“Because my gift to you…” He moved his face closer to mine, pulling me into whatever was happening in his head. “My gift is to remove memories that cause you pain.”
“Okay, um, right.” Had I lost my mind? It probably wouldn’t have hurt to scream.
He held my gaze, locking me into something I couldn’t explain. A tear puckered up in his left eye, and slid down his cheek where it stopped on his top lip. Then he blinked, snapping us out of whatever place he’d taken us to, and glanced behind my head. “Here comes your dark knight,” he said, easing his arms away from me.
He strolled off into the last group of stragglers hanging around the Shack. How did he know my nickname for Jalen?
I wiped away a tear rolling down my right cheek.
“Chela, there you are. You scared me, girl.” Jalen’s voice cut into the moment. He spun me around to face him. I blinked, clearing my eyes. “What’s wrong? Did you get hurt?”
I glanced around us. The boy was gone. A dull headache joined the fuzziness in my head. Lost inside a clouded mind, I forgot what I wanted to say. The entire night’s events were hazy.
I fumbled with my thoughts.
What happened to me in there?

BOOK REVIEW: The Mirror Of N'De by L.K. Malone

The Mirror of N'De is a YA Science Fiction/Fantasy novel.

Hadley Mivana is a thirteen year old Hamash who lives in N'De where the Oresed are the upper ruling class.

The Hamash are treated as a slave race, owing everything to their "owners", the Oresed.  On the day that Hadley and her friends, Alila and Nomish Rakam, are old enough to be apprenticed, the three believe it to be the happiest day of their lives.  However when Ba'ar, Hadley's nemesis, walks into the shop they are working in, their antics get them into heaps of trouble with Asinus, the Overlord of the Lawgivers who has never hid his contempt of the Hamash people.

However, before their fates can be sealed, the great and powerful Emperor and his young son, Zer-Shungalli arrive via a shining disk and announce that the Oresed and the Hamash were to be treated equally and the slave classes were to be removed.  They also announce that the coveted apprentice spots in the Tower were now open to all of N'De, including the Hamash.

On the day that all the children are called for the testing, Hadley hopes that she is not chosen, she could not bear to leaver her parents, plus, she has been having weird dreams the seem to be prophetic in nature.  The dreams have the adults in her life, acting scared and nervous and she is sworn never to mention them to anyone.

After Hadley is sent to the Tower, she makes many enemies and many friends and learns things she never could dream were possible.  Following the direction of her dreams, Hadley may be able to unlock the mysteries surrounding the Mirror of N'De.

I thought this was a delightful book and was charmed by the characters found within.  I loved the world and character building that the author has encompassed.  There are creatures to be found within the pages that truly uncanny and the cross breeding and results can be hilarious.

I thought the antagonists played their parts well, one couldn't help but loathe Asinus and his racist, condescending attitude.  Ba'ar was also a worthy thorn in the side of the characters, especially Hadley, who, for the most part, bore her discomfort well.

I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the Emperor, his son and the Mirror.  It made you want to continue to read on, just to find out the circumstances.  The Tower, with all its surprises, intrigues and developments was entertaining and one couldn't help but laugh at the wit provided.

At times I felt that the story was about the Genesis story found in the bible, I couldn't help but see the similarities betwixt it and this story, especially when one reads the history of the Hamash, the Oresteds, the lizard rulers and the magic that surrounds it all.

I would give The Mirror of N'De a four out of five stars.  I found the story was a tad slow to pick up and the dialogue sometimes lacked command or direction but other than that, this is a wonderful read that will be sure to entertain and hold you captivated right to the very end.

SYNOPSIS:
In the mythical city of N'de lives thirteen-year-old Hadlay and her people, the Ramash. Scorned and abused by the unloving and absent Emperor, the Ramash are poor people, placed second to the ruling class of the Oresed. Young but bold, Hadlay rages against the injustice in her city. When she is chosen for the honor of serving the Prince in the Tower, she hopes to find a way to right the wrong . . . but soon discovers that things are worse than she believed.

Echo Falls by Jaime McDougall

Echo Falls is a Paranormal Romance.

Phoebe Martin has just moved to Echo Falls; running from a past she doesn't wish to embrace.  Upon her arrival, she is attacked by a huge dog and she would have been ripped to shreds if it wasn't for the heroic attributes of Aidan O'Bryan.  In an off-hand, flippant manner, she brushes away the attack and Aidan's help.

Aidan, a police officer and an Alpha-male werewolf, has his own secret agenda for keeping the streets of Echo Falls safe.  When a serial killer begins to kill people in town, Aidan and his task force are set to remove the Hunter from their midst.  Someone is killing off their kind and Aidan is determined to find out who it is before too many more are killed.

Phoebe is attracted to Aidan and wishes to keep him at a distance.  There are things about Phoebe that Aidan could never find out and she tries to discourage their friendship but to no avail, Aidan has sworn to protect Phoebe at all costs.

The Hunter is tracking someone in Echo Falls and the psychological mind games he plays with his victim makes it hard for them to trust anyone and everyone is guilty of subterfuge.  Who can Phoebe trust, she has been running for so long and she finally felt like Echo Falls may be the future she is looking for.  However, someone is killing her friends and she feels that only she can stop the madness.

I loved this book and thought it was an excellent paranormal romance.  I loved the descriptions of the characters and enjoyed their back stories and thought they fit the story nicely.  I liked the attraction of Phoebe and Aidan and enjoyed watching their relationship grow.  I thought Phoebe's trust issues were believable and I loved how Aidan ingrained himself into her life.

I thought however, there was, at times, too much time in between the characters and when they should have reacted to one another.  Such as, Aidan swore to keep Phoebe safe and then doesn't come around for a few days...I understand he was giving her distance, but for the events unfolding, propriety should have been set aside for urgency.  I thought that Aidan didn't dig deep enough when he should  have.

I loved Mia and her wickedness and thought she was written perfectly to balance the characterizations of Phoebe and Elle, who befriended Phoebe from the onset of the book.  I thought that there could have been more back story between these women, as well as several of the packs other members, such as Elle's husband Will, Aidan's best friend Thomas and even The Hunter.  While I loved how the story progressed, I felt it could have been so much more with that added level of character understanding.

I would give Echo Falls a four out of five stars.  I loved the pace of the story, the draw to the plot and the romance that built upon itself instead of rushing, however, I would love to see more of the back story characters.  With a little more definition, Jaime McDougall is definitely a writer to keep on watch list, she has the right stuff and I would definitely read more of her work!

SYNOPSIS:
Running from a nightmare stalking her every move, Phoebe Martin arrives in Echo Falls hoping she has finally found a safe place to stop. But trouble has a way of catching up and soon the signs are there.

After a vicious attack in an alley, policeman Aidan O'Bryan is left with Phoebe as his only path to understanding why the Echo Falls werewolf pack - his pack - is being attacked. When another pack member is killed, Phoebe is forced to confront her past before she loses Aidan and everything she has come to love.

Love and duty become one as Aidan strives to prevent Phoebe from becoming the next victim. But with Phoebe just as determined to protect Aidan and her new home, secrets from her past threaten to tear them apart. Will love give Phoebe the strength to trust Aidan and face her fears, or will her past destroy her future?
