Centerpiece Ideas for Your Kid's Birthday Party

Planning a kid’s birthday party is an easy job for any parent out there. It’s quite easy to think about what to cook for the party, how to make the invitations, and what activities to offer to the kids in the party. Planning the centerpiece for the birthday tables, however, is the most important since it sets the theme for the birthday party itself. If you’re planning to make a centerpiece for your tyke’s birthday party, then I suggest picking something that he/she either likes, or something that he’ll/she’ll be proud to show off to his/her little buddies. Here are some ideas to help you get started with your project.

Your Kid’s Favorite Characters – Your kid’s favorite characters can be a centerpiece that he’ll enjoy. There are a lot of 3-D pop-out centerpieces of different cartoon or videogame characters out there that you can either buy or print out yourself. You can also buy dolls or figures of that character to be displayed as a bunch in the middle of the table. Afterwards, the rest of the table ornaments should go along with this centerpiece.

Your Kid’s favorite toys – You can also use your kid’s favorite toy as a centerpiece. For example, if your kid is into teddy bears, you can assemble a bundle of teddy bears, and then set them in the middle of the table together with other tiny details that can help set the theme for your table. You can even make a whole scene out of these toys as a centerpiece (provided that your table is big enough to accommodate that many toys).

Candies – Using candies and other sweets is also a great idea for a centerpiece, but you’ll have a hard time making a theme with it. You can use the color of the candies to set a color scheme for the table, however, so it’s not all that bad. The best part of it is that a lot of kids love candies, making this centerpiece idea a sure hit in birthday parties. Be careful not to use glass trays for your sweets, though – remember that this is a party for kids who might end up hurting themselves if they end up breaking the glass candy tray!

Cakes – You can also use cakes and cupcakes as your table’s centerpiece, provided that you have a good tray for it. There are a lot of cake and cupcake plates for sale out there that you can add decorations and tiny trinkets to thanks to the slots and hooks that have been incorporated around the plates (usually seen in those high cake/cupcake plates). There are also bakeshops out there that design cakes based on popular themes (such as cartoon characters).

I hope these tips gave you an idea about how to quickly come up with easy centerpieces for your child’s birthday party. If you have other ideas about making easy centerpieces for birthdays, feel free to share!

How to Make Your Child’s Birthday Party Special This Year

Birthdays are incredibly important for kids. They look forward to their birthday parties all year, and when their birthday month rolls around, it’s difficult to get them to talk about anything else besides their upcoming birthday party. Unfortunately, busy parents don’t always share the same excitement about planning and throwing a birthday party for their child. Birthday parties require some work on your part, but they don’t have to be a major source of stress and dread in your life. If you plan the party right, you can make it special and memorable for your child and manageable for you. Here are some of the easy things you can do to make your child’s birthday party special this year:

1. Choose the party theme/location together.

You don’t have to and shouldn’t necessarily make all the decisions regarding the party, unless your child’s a baby or toddler. Just sit down with your child and come up with some possible theme and venue ideas. If you want to save some money on the party, consider throwing it at your house instead of a venue where you’ll likely have to pay a fee per party guest. If you do decide to throw the party at your house, make sure you let your child pick a fun theme for the party.

2. Don’t Stress About the Party Menu

Planning a menu and preparing food for the party doesn’t have to be difficult. If you host the party in the early afternoon, you won’t even have to serve a meal – you can just serve snacks. Keep the party food simple. Finger foods like strawberries, carrots, cheese, and crackers generally go over well. If you do decide to serve a meal at the party, consider something simple like turkey and cheese or ham and cheese sandwiches. Generally, it’s a good idea to stick to healthy party foods and all-natural fruit juice instead of punch. Foods that are loaded with refined sugar will only give the kids a sugar high and subsequent crash, which can make it more difficult for you and the other chaperones to manage their behavior.

3. Prepare a Themed Cake

Something like a themed cake in the shape of a pirate or a cartoon character, depending on the theme of the party, can make the shindig extra special for your child. Although making a themed cake may seem like a daunting task, it’s actually not that difficult. All you have to do is decorate the cake with some icing and cut the cake into a fun shape, if you want to put forth some extra effort. Don’t worry about your artistic abilities falling short. The kids won’t notice. All they’ll care about it eating a cake that looks like their favorite cartoon character!

So, lose the stress, make party planning a collaborative effort with your child, and consider making the party extra special with something like a themed cake. And don’t forget to have a little bit of fun too!

A Party for the Kids Without Breaking the Bank

FORGET pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey or the humble sleepover; when it comes to kids' birthdays, parents are increasingly feeling pressure to throw an extravaganza. This often means hiring a professional and forking out lots of cash. Inflatable jumping castles, clowns, pony rides, and petting zoos are just some of the options – and this is if you just hold the party at home.

So how can cash-strapped mums and dads give their youngsters a celebration they will never forget, and at the same time please the playground critics?

1. Tone It Down

The good news is that experts agree that birthday parties for kids are getting out of control. Research has also shown that low-income mothers feel pressure to spend more than they can afford for a birthday party. Professor Bill Doherty of the University of Minnesota is so passionate about cutting out the extravagance, he helped to establish a website at www.birthdaysithoutpressure.com to combat the trend. "We are not telling people what they should do; we have no prescriptions for what is the right party. But we do believe that many parents can benefit from conversation about what’s happened to community norms for birthday parties,’’ the group advises.

2. Create Your Own Rituals

Celebrating every birthday with a grand fanfare not only becomes costly but also exhausting, particularly if you have more than one child. Instead select special years that may warrant a special party – such as turning one, five, ten or thirteen. Those birthdays falling in between could be restricted to family only, or just afternoon tea with two or three friends. Let the birthday child choose their favourite takeaway dinner, dessert or movie to watch at home. And as a special treat – let them stay up a little longer or excuse them from any regular chores for the week.

3. Good Old-Fashioned Fun

Throwing a backyard birthday party doesn’t have to hit your back pocket. Generations past have loved games such as pass-the-parcel, bobbing for apples, limbo, or a three-legged race and your children will be no different. Start a new game every 10 to 15 minutes to prevent restlessness. There are plenty of cheap prizes at discount outlets, or you could offer food treats as prizes instead.

Keep the invitation list down to a manageable number. Parents will often want to stay at preschoolers’ parties, so factor this into your guest list. Email your invites instead of sending paper ones for extra savings. Don’t make the function too long – two and a half hours is perfect for kids over five years. And while it might be tempting to hire a professional to do all the entertaining, you can do it with some creativity and energy. They may not show it on the day, but your own children will treasure those memories when they are older.

Tween girls will love the old fashioned slumber party – set up the DVD player and iPod, supply some cheap nail polish and coloured hairspray – they will be able to amuse themselves for hours. You may, however, need to invest in some earplugs to get some peace and quiet!

4. Thrifty Activities

If the kids are too big for musical statues, you may want to treat them to a party outside of the home. The upside is that you won’t have to cook or clean, but on the downside it can be pricey. Proper research and a bit of planning can mean big savings. Entertainment Books (www.entertainmentbook.com.au) sold through most schools and community clubs offers discounts of 25 to 50 percent and two-for-one deals at popular attractions and activities. These can be a great resource for a budget party – especially if you have friends or relatives willing to also give you a few coupons. Find out about group discounts on movie tickets - then the kids will be contained for at least an hour and a half.

5. Creativity

Kids may seem like tough critics, but it’s likely they won’t even care how much you’ve forked out on the party – as long as they have fun.  Think beyond the McDonald’s party or ten-pin bowling. One ideas is to go to the local park and hold your own mini-Olympics. Or host a dress-up party - most little ones will have a superhero or princess costume at home. Don’t go over the top with decorations, a few balloons and paper plates will do. As long as you provide lots of chips, balloons and lollies you’ll please even the most spoilt child. Your children's memories of party fun will be with them for years to come!

Judy Moody and the Not So Bummer Summer Slumber Party ~ PART 1

TODAY, September 26th, is my youngest daughter's 8th BIRTHDAY~!!

Happy 8th Birthday Not-Quite-Right...and many more~!!
Ms. Not-Quite-Right is MOST excited to be hosting a
Judy Moody and the Not So Bummer Summer Slumber Party~!!

She has invited her friends, her cousins AND her neighbours to spend the night and share it with Judy Moody and her CRAZY antics~!!

We have some wonderful cupcakes planned with her "specially" created CupCake toppers being provided by Sweet'n'Tots...the cupcake toppers kind of look like her...and she was MOST impressed that she got to create them herself!!

DVD release October 18th!!
We have a talent show planned in which the children can sing, dance and/or act their way to our Goofy Groovy Award for being AWESOME~!!

Arts & Crafts are also being planned, my daughter is able to choose two and she's having  a tough time deciding...LOL...I'm thinking she's DEFINITELY going to opt for everyone making the muffins...it's the other choice she's having difficulties with!!

PLUS...we plan to make some popcorn and watch the movie, Judy Moody and the Not So Bummer Summer, and let our viewers know what a dozen children thought about it~!!

We think it's also a great idea to keep some colouring books and crayons nearby just in case there are a few children who aren't able to fall asleep right away and they can keep themselves amused quietly until they are able~!!
The party goodies are going to consist of popcorn, chips, pizza, our own grown watermelon, pop and juice...and for breakfast, after a night of junk food, we're going for eggs in a basket, bacon or cereal for those who wish and juice!!

EVERYONE involved is VERY excited for this event to happen and as SOON as the DVD arrives...we'll be celebrating in Judy Moody style~!!  *GULP~!!*

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NOT-QUITE-RIGHT~!!

We LOVE and ADORE you and we wish for ALL of your Birthday wishes to be true for you~!!

Stay tuned for PART 2 of the Judy Moody Not So Bummer Summer Slumber Party~!!
