Can Numerology Work For You?

Numerology is the study of the symbolism of numbers. It is a type of applied mysticism, which connects a mystical symbol with the ability to give insight into a person’s character. Numerology can be traced back 10,000 years, to Egypt and Babylonia, but it is Greek mathematician Pythagoras, who is accredited with developing numerology and laying the foundations for numerology. In more recent years, numerologist L. Dow Balliet incorporated Pythagorean principles with the concepts of numerology that we use today.

Your Personality?
Numerologists claim that numerology can give insight into what kind of personality you have, your strengths and weaknesses, and what your talents are. Numerology also claims to be able to tell you what kinds of stresses currently exist in your life, and in the lives of those around you. Numerologists state that numerology can help employers see if someone can fulfil their job requirements, or can help someone who is having difficulty in a relationship to work out what is going wrong. Numerologists also believe numbers can be used to advise on when is the best time to marry, change jobs, or any other life changing decisions.

How It Works
Numerology works on the principle that everything in the universe has a specific vibration. According to Balliet, people, objects, food and colours all vibrate. Numbers also have their own vibration rate, according to numerologists, and by finding out the vibration rate of an object, you can find out the qualities associated with it. In numerology, all numbers are reduced to single digits 1-9. Numerologists work out what a person’s number is, and then that person can live their life by making choices that are compatible with their number, by making choices that have the same vibration as them.

How to Work out Your Number
Numerologists commonly use a person’s name or birth date to determine their number. It might seem strange to have your personality governed by your name, which is chosen by your parents, but numerologists argue that unborn babies actually choose their names themselves and communicate their name choice to their parents through psychic links, thus making sure they have a name with the correct number to match their personality. Different numerologists use different ways to work out a person’s number, but one often used is based on the position of each letter in the alphabet:
A=1
B=2
C=3 etc.
A numerologist picks the numbers that match the letters, adding the numbers together when a digit is over 9. For example, the number of the letter K would be 2, as its number 11 in the alphabet, so we add 1 and 1 together to get 2. Joe Bloggs’s number would be 165 236111. The total for Joe is 12, and Bloggs is 14. Adding these two numbers together gets us 26. 2 plus 6 is 8, which gives us Joe Blogg’s number.

What Your Number Means
Different numerologists apply different concepts to different numbers, but here are some common numerical concepts:
1: willpower, ambition, leadership, success
2: emotional, harmonious, peacemaker, un-confrontational
3: imagination, happiness, creativity
4: practicality, instinctive, endurance
5: outgoing, curious, committed
6: honesty, faithful, domestic, optimist
7: cleverness, introvert, mysterious
8: natural leadership, wealth, authoritative, contrite
9: possessiveness, spirituality, empathy

A numerologist makes recommendations about a person’s future based on their number. Topics numerologists often cover are lucky numbers (might be a good time to buy a lottery ticket), career paths, qualities to look for in a partner, negative personality traits to avoid, and positive ones to emphasise. By giving you insight into your own personality, numerology can help equip you to make more informed decisions, and manage your relationships with others.

Many people use the services of numerologists to give them guidance in their life, and credit numerology with helping them make personal and business decisions. There has however, been little scientific research into numerology, and there's no proof that the there is any real correlation between numbers and the qualities they are each associated with. For this reason, you might want to keep an open mind if you employ a numerologist. However, even if you’re not sure if you believe in it, talking to someone about your problems will help you work through them, and the guidance they give can help you get your life in order and feel more positive.

The Mighty Oak In Myth & Legend~!!

The rapid oak tree,

Before him heaven and earth quake;

In every land his name is mine.

-Taliesin, The Battle of the Trees

The mighty Oak (quercus robur) tree has been a part of myth and legend since the beginning of our known times and perhaps, even beyond.  It is believed that the Oak tree was the very first tree ever created, giving it many traits associated with wisdom and fertility; the acorn was the "first food" of mankind.

Many pagan cults have arisen to worship the power associated with Oak trees, it is said that two doves flew out of Thebes.  One flew to the Libyan Ammon in the oasis of Siwwa and the other to Dodonna; giving birth to the oracular oak cults that were dedicated to the Gods and Goddesses.  It is believed that Oak trees hosted the power, energy and strength of their Gods and took it in great reverence to have an Oak tree hit by lightning, the voice of Zeus and is sacred to all the thunder and lightning Gods.

The Oak tree is thought to have born the first man and the trees themselves were called the "first mothers".  The Dryads are fairies who reside in oak trees and the Titans were said to have been stretched upon great oaken wheels.  The word Oak means "Door" in many languages, a door to other worlds, or other portals, a cross~over between worlds are some of the more popular conceptions.

Animals closely attributed to Oak trees are the bull, wolf, woodpecker, wrens and doves.  The number twelve is sacred to Oak trees as well as the planet Jupiter.

Many cultures have come to use the trees as protective talismans, not only for the strength of wood but for its believed magical properties.  It was once believed that if you planted an acorn during the waxing moon, it would draw gold towards you.  As well as it was once thought that if you placed acorns on your window sill, it would ward off evil; wearing an oak leave next to your heart is said to protect the wearer from lies and deceit and the acorn can also be hung in the kitchen window in order to bring luck and prosperity into the house.

Some medicinal purposes once believed included the burning of oak wood logs in order to draw away illness and disease, white oak bark tea breaks up congestion, acorns once thought to treat constipation, teas made from oak bark were once used to cure hemorrhoids, and a handful of oak leaves strewn in your bath water is believed to rejuvenate both body and spirit.

Mistletoe is often found growing on the sides of Oak trees, once giving it a high reverence in all cultures as a gift from the Gods themselves, as many believed the Mistletoe usually arrived after lightning struck the tree.  Mistletoe's is given high regard as a life~giving plant and a symbol of sexuality.  It is associated with love and many love potions have been created using the Mistletoe as an added derivative.  The tree has also been known to boost one's energy levels and help aid in the manifesting of goals.

Oak Trees have inspired bravery, prosperity, strength, presence and leadership by the majesty of its boughs.  It has inspired cultures, gave birth to religions and provided food, healing and sustenance to generations; legends surround it and myths are formed from its almost immortal stage upon which it has been set.  The next time you walk beneath an old Oak tree, remember that many have already done before you and many will who follow and if trees could talk, imagine the stories that they could tell.

"I shot an arrow into the air
It fell to earth, I knew not where
For so swiftly it flew,
The sight could not follow in its flight
I breathed a song into the air
It fell to earth, I knew not where
For, who has sight so keen and strong
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroken
And the song,
from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend"

Tablecloths, Illusion and Telepathy: Why Scientists Make the Best Magicians

It’s magic, and science?
Ask most people what magic is and they’ll probably answer that it’s something ‘impossible’ or ‘unanswerable’ - anything that can’t be explained rationally.

Then, ask the same person what they understand by ‘science’ and they’ll answer completely differently, describing it as rational thought and reasoning- a way of understanding the world based on observation and research.

How could the two be compatible?

Interestingly, many of the world’s most iconic magic tricks are entirely based around science. Here’s how.

The Tablecloth Trick
Picture a banquet table laden with cutlery, bowls and candles. Could you whip out the tablecloth without disturbing the items on top?

Although it seems baffling, Newton’s First Law of Motion explains the whole trick.

It works according to the principle of ‘inertia’, described by Newton as the tendency for an object to remain at rest until a force acts directly upon it.

When a magician quickly yanks the tablecloth he is relying on the principle of inertia to keep the objects in place.

The swift motion is key to this trick; any slower and the items would move too far, causing them to fall over.
The tablecloth you use also makes a difference- slippery surfaces are best!

Why not try it yourself by experimenting with different tablecloths? (Plastic wipe clean tablecloths recommended!).

Understanding a Magician’s Illusions
In a recent interview, Teller, a famous magician, revealed how scientific research helps him to understand why people fall for visual illusions.

He says that "at the core of every trick is a cold, cognitive experiment in perception."

Magic and illusion are based on a scientific understanding of the way people perceive things. By manipulating perception, we can alter people’s understanding of what’s ‘real’ and what’s not.

The popular Balducci Levitation trick is a prime example of this. When it comes down to it, this illusion is caused by two things: the magician’s angle in relation to the audience and the precise positioning of his feet.

It’s all about perception, angles and precision!

Telepathy and Hypnosis: The Scientific Study of the Mind
Derren Brown is well known for his mindreading and hypnotic capabilities.

When watching him, it is easy to assume that he possesses baffling psychic or paranormal abilities. But Brown himself has frequently reiterated how he has no such abilities. In fact, he is a complete sceptic.

Brown’s success is due to his deep knowledge of human psychology and understanding of how to predict and influence people’s thoughts via suggestion and manipulation. He has also studied how to read physical clues provided by body language to determine what someone is thinking.

Magic Explained
Rather than being impossible masters of the unexplainable, magicians draw on rational, scientific principles. They are thus scientists, but with a unique mission.

It’s not their aim to make the world clearer and simpler. Rather, magicians aim to captivate their audience’s imagination and to recreate a sense of wonder.

Think that there are certain magic tricks that can’t be explained by science? Challenge me below.

Amalia Dempsey writes for Wipe Easy Tablecloths, leading supplier of colourful and attractive wipe clean tablecloths. Interested in learning how to perform the perfect tablecloth trick? Oddly enough, just a little bit of science might make the whole thing a lot easier.
