My Thoughts:

The story sets off interesting enough, you are introduced who you assume are going to be the main characters and begin to build a rapport with them.  You watch the scene being set up and you begin to get the uncanny sensation that you have seen this same scene in dozens of films and truthfully, the whole premise was nothing but one huge cliché after another.

After the shooting, things begin to get confusing as the viewer isn't quite sure who are the victims and who are the "bad" guys as character building is left on the wayside in order to bring a mindless and drifting plot that doesn't really capture the viewers imagination nor their attention.

I thought Corey Haim was over~rated in his role of Det. Lou Andreas, his portrayal of a "on~the~take" detective was not only trite in his depiction, but grossly over~acted in almost every scene.  "Decisions" is being classified as Haim's "last movie" that he shall be appearing in and after the likes of his performance in this movie, I cannot say as I am going to miss him much.

I thought the musical score was improperly tuned to the film as at times the quality was lacking and the volume had to be turned up and down with there being no happy flow to the listening levels.  I thought the music was fitting for the movie and set the tone nicely however and was one of the few aspects of the movie that was enjoyable.

I thought the dialogue was lacking in some areas and almost seemed ad libbed in others.  Often times it was hard to follow as there was no clear and concise measure to the characters words.  Most of the time it was a lot of incessant shouting matches between testosterone humped up men who are looking for an "easy" way out of their life situations.

I would give Decisions a two out of five stars.  I just didn't find this movie appealing, though it did have some moments of brief clarity, for the most part, the director needs to hire themselves a better writer if they wish to continue working in the movie industry.  There were some nice cinemagraphics but not enough to keep the movie interesting.

HUNGER AWARENESS WEEK ~ May 7th ~ 11th, 2012

During HUNGER AWARENESS WEEK, food banks around Canada will be raising awareness about hunger and ways in which to solve it by hosting events and sharing stories.

Close to 900,000 people a month use Canadian Food Banks and with efforts such as this, food banks can hope to fill their shelves in order to provide wholesome and healthy meals to those less fortunate.

Hunger Awareness Week is May 7-11, 2012. This is the first year that we are holding Hunger Awareness Week, expanding this day-long initiative which launched in 2006. Together we recognized that the issue of hunger deserves to be in the spotlight beyond one day and we hope you will join your fellow food banks and participate.

This year for our Hunger Awareness Week Campaign we are asking Canadians to “Give It Up for Hunger to make a positive impact on the issue of hunger in our country.

What does giving it up really mean? It’s as easy as three simple steps:

Give It Up Close to 900,000 Canadians have relied on food banks this past month.  Know what it’s like to have food out of reach by challenging yourself to give up your lunches or a food staple for the week.
Give a Shout- Share your experience- go online and show your support via Facebook, Twitter or blogging or wear a Hunger Awareness Week sticker.
Give It Out - Donate food, funds or your time to your local food bank.

We encourage all food banks to participate in our campaign. For more information please visit the website: www.hungerawarenessweek.ca.

Food Banks Canada will be doing the following on Hunger Awareness Week to raise awareness:
  • National media outreach
  • Social media campaign
  • Lunch-In Event in Toronto

SPOTLIGHT: Gordon Gumpertz author of Red Hot Sky

Join Gordon Gumpertz, author of the action/adventure novel, Red Hot Sky, as he virtually tours the blogosphere January 3 – February 29 2012 on his first virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book!

About the Book...

CO2 buildup in earth’s atmosphere reaches a tipping point. Global weather destabilizes, turns chaotic. Ice storms, dust storms, floods, blizzards, hurricanes, tornadoes pummel the earth nonstop. A secret computer model reveals that the frantic weather will peak out, and transform world climate into an alien environment devastating to human survival.

Scientists Ben Mason, Claudine Manet, and Bertrand Short are developers of the computer model. Ben and Claudine are lovers as well as lab partners. While they work frantically to head off the approaching catastrophe, a disgraced Russian general hacks into their model and sees earth’s bleak future as his opportunity for ultimate world power.

Ben, who had left the CIA to develop the computer model at the national lab,  is reactivated by the Agency and sent on a perilous mission to block the rogue general’s plot. Claudine, not realizing that Ben is on a secret mission, misunderstands his absence, putting their relationship on thin ice.

Claudine is placed in charge of a massive NASA project that, if completed on time, could stop the approaching doomsday climate change. But her project is stalled by bureaucracy. Ben is on the run in hostile territory. The climate change calamity steadily approaches.

About the Author...

Gordon Gumpertz brings fiction readers another exciting action/adventure experience in his new novel RED HOT SKY. This is the author’s second book, following his highly acclaimed novel TSUNAMI.

In addition to writing novels, Gordon has won gold and silver awards in national and regional short story competitions. He is a member of the Authors Guild, the Palm Springs Writers Guild, a UCLA graduate, and an instrument-rated private pilot. He keeps his website current by blogging on natural disasters and natural phenomena.

Gordon and his wife Jenny live not far from the San Andreas fault, where the Pacific Plate thrusts into the North American Plate, building increasingly high levels of faultline stress which, the seismologists say, may soon produce the Big One.

Read the First Chapter...

Chapter One - Red Hot Sky
Ben Mason pulled on a ski jacket and watch cap and walked out of his Arlington apartment into the bitterest ice storm he could remember. Head down, he forged his way to his aging Chevy Blazer. He set the defrost on max and inched through the whiteout, finally reaching the lab in Falls Church at 7:35 p.m.
His lab partner, Shorty, six-foot-five Bertrand Short, stared at rows of rolling numbers on his computer screen. “Worried you wouldn’t make it.”
“Test run’s still scheduled for midnight, right?”
Shorty clicked an icon on his screen. “Nobody’s said otherwise.”
“No ice storm’s bad enough to keep me away. This could be the most crucial night of our lives.” Ben pulled off his watch cap and ran fingers through his black hair, then draped his parka on a coat rack.
Shorty finally looked up, the light catching glints of red in his thatch of blond hair and the two days of stubble. “Jesus H. Christ! You look like you been set on by a pack of hungry coyotes.”
Ben stretched his wiry six-foot body. “I was working the speed bag at the gym, and this pro came in looking for a sparring partner. I got lucky and knocked him down with a left hook. Big mistake.”
“About as smart as goosing a rattlesnake. No headgear?”
Ben poured coffee and wrapped his hands around the warm mug. “Forgot, and he tagged me a couple times.”
Shorty said, “You oughtn’t to go around messing with those pros. You mighta boxed in college, but you’re too damn old and too damn slow now. You’ve come in more than once with those blue eyes of yours closed down to slits. One a these days they’ll knock out what little brains you got left.”
“Keeps me in shape. And I’m okay.”
“Glad to hear that, because Secretary Flagler’s been trying to get you.”
Ben called on the secretary of energy’s private line. “Sorry, Mr. Secretary, I got tied up.”
Flagler’s voice sounded tinny on the speakerphone. “Beeson’s gunning for you.”
“Doesn’t surprise me. Did you explain?”
“He won’t listen. Wants to get you and Dr. Short up there before his committee on a fishing expedition. Anyhow, expect a call from the senator himself.”
Ben massaged his sore temple. “What’ll I say?”
A pause. The lab was after-work quiet. Flagler wheezed, “Try not to antagonize. He has a lot of power and could hurt us.”
A half hour later, Ben and Shorty were looking at the florid face and angry eyes of Senator Marcus Beeson on the other end of a videophone connection.
“I’ll tell you straight away I’m pretty damn mad. You two are making me late for a New Year’s Eve supper with the vice president and his wife.”
Ben tried to sound respectful. “Sorry your evening is messed up, Senator, but I don’t understand how we ….”
“Well let me tell you. I found out this is the night you’re planning to run that damn fool experiment. I’m telling you not to do it. If you do, you and Dr. Short will be called before my committee.” Bushy black and white eyebrows slanted up. Each word was accompanied by a rap of knuckle on desktop. “And I’ll have the FBI investigate you for violating national security.”
“This was all cleared by Secretary Flagler,” Ben said.
“I’m flying to London with him in the morning. I’ll damn soon find out if he’s part of this conspiracy. Or just gullible. Grabbing control of all ten of our country’s new supercomputers at the same time undermines national defense. Christ, who do you guys think you are?”
Ben said, “The secretary and I met with the directors of the national labs involved. They understand the importance of the experiment. And we’re asking for time only between midnight and five. They all agreed on midnight January first because it’s the time of lowest demand.”
Beeson’s jowls swayed as he shook his head. “If they did, they’re a bunch of misguided fools. The whole cabinet’s called to complain. Defense, homeland, intelligence, treasury, interior, health, everybody. Just exactly what is it gives you priority over the military and every other department in the government?”
Bertrand Short spoke, his twang straight Oklahoma. “We’re tryin’ to find out what the greenhouse effect’ll do to our future climate, and that’s why we built this here global warming computer model. But like I told Ben, we need a computer the size of Texas to make it work.”
Beeson’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t know what you’re really trying to pull, but I intend to get to the bottom of it, and when I do there’ll be hell to pay.”
Ben said, “Shorty, I mean Dr. Short, is right. Computing power’s what we need, and a lot of it. So I came up with the idea of hooking all ten of the new Quantum Five-Thousands together by satellite to create one massive computing source.”
“Why can’t you get what you need with one or two?”
“Senator, there’s just too much data in the model ….”
Shorty picked it up. “We got historic records and prehistoric measurements of just about everything that’s ever happened to this planet since the ice age. Temperature, humidity, rain, snow, drought, flood, volcanoes, earthquakes. Hour by hour. Every centimeter of the earth’s surface, subsurface, oceans, and atmosphere.”
Ben said, “It’ll take all ten running together to digest that much data and establish the trend lines and push them forward far enough.”
Senator Beeson wagged a sausage finger at the camera. “Your so-called greenhouse research is a waste of taxpayer money. Weather’s getting hotter, everybody knows that.”
Ben said, “Hotter, sure, but more erratic. We just don’t know where this greenhouse thing is taking us. If our computer model works, it’ll show future climate patterns and give us a big advantage in strategic planning. Economic and military.”
Beeson’s scoff sounded like a pig at feeding time. “What are you people really up to? I know a cock-and-bull story when I hear it. This greenhouse stuff is a smokescreen. Something’s going on. I can smell it.” His sausage finger wagged a warning. “You can expect a summons to appear before my committee. Both of you.”
Ben was still seething when he called Secretary Flagler to tell him they’d just been royally reamed out by Senator Beeson.
Flagler said, “I’ll try to calm him down tomorrow. Now let’s review the ground rules. The directors of all ten labs have agreed to give you midnight to five a.m. eastern standard for this test phase. That’ll be you and Dr. Short and Dr. Manet to make sure the hookup works.”
“Dr. Manet’s on an emergency trip to New Orleans.”
“Okay. So just you and Dr. Short will decide if this hookup is viable. All ten computers will be standing by to receive your satellite signal in exactly one hour and twenty-nine minutes. Is everything ready at your end?”
“We’re all set, Mr. Secretary.”
“Give me a report at four thirty in the morning. Call me at home. I’m leaving for the airport at five. Senator Beeson and I are catching an early flight to London for that energy conference.”
Ben walked to the window. Crunch time. The future of the planet might well be at stake, as well as his job as head of the project team and his standing in the scientific community. The ice storm had cleared for the moment. A half-moon spread pale light over Falls Church and the sleet-covered grounds and low buildings of National Science Laboratories. The big dish antennae would be iced over. Would that screw up the satellite link?
If things didn’t work, he’d never get a second chance, probably be demoted to some dead-end job. Maybe the CIA would take him back. He’d left the agency after two years and accepted this job with NSL because his work in the CIA lab was boring. He’d wanted more excitement. Now he had it. Everything was riding on the outcome. Well, nothing more he could do at this point. Just wait.
Shorty fidgeted and went to the john. He opened the window and took in great gulps of fresh air. Finally they were only seconds away from their moment of truth.
Ben pushed the start button. He stared at the panel of ten indicator lights that would confirm connection with each of the supercomputers. All dark. He held his breath.
Shorty hovered over the indicator panel. “We got satellite lag time, but didn’t figure it’d take this long.”
Ben said softly, fervently, as if coaxing dice in a crap game, “Come on, system. Come on!”
A moment later, the first green light blinked on. Lawrence Livermore. After a few more seconds, JPL, Sandia, and National Science Laboratories lit up, followed by a ten-second delay. Then Los Alamos, Oakridge, Brookhaven, and Argonne came on at the same time. All but two were now in the green. NOAA-Princeton winked on. Finally, Cornell. At last, all ten online.
Ben yelled, “All right!” He slapped palms with Shorty.
Shorty said, “We got the power hooked up. Now let’s see if the dang thing works.”
Ben inserted the disk and hit Enter.
A date appeared in the upper right-hand corner. One month from today. A Robinson’s Projection of the earth popped onto the screen. The resolution was amazing. Every feature of the earth’s surface stood out in multihued three-dimensional relief.
“Good lord above!” Shorty said. “Never thought I’d see a grid scale this fine. All that computer power is really doing the job.” He put his coffee mug down with a thunk. “I know it’s only a simulation, but sure as shootin’ looks like the real thing.”
Ben just looked at the display for a few minutes, savoring the beauty of it and the fact that everything seemed to be working. “I’m going to click forward now month by month to look at the rest of this year, then go for year two.” He left each month on the screen for two minutes before moving to the next.
Shorty studied the screen alongside Ben. Both were quiet, intent.
“End of year two,” Ben said. “What do you think so far?”
“If our model’s right, the world’s in for one mighty big shitload of weather.”
“You see a pattern?”
“Chaos is what I see.”
Ben nodded. “Heat waves, hurricanes, tornadoes, monsoons, ice storms, dust storms, floods, blizzards, droughts. Nonstop. One on top of the other. “Same erratic weather we’ve been having the past few years, only worse.” He tapped the mouse. “Let’s go out one more.”
Shorty’s brown eyes lingered on the screen at the end of year three. “Holy frijoles! Ain’t never seen nuthin’ like it.”
Ben’s smile was a half grimace. “You can drop the country cousin routine anytime.”
“Well, I’m serious, Pardner. Weather’s working itself up into some kind of frenzy. Like the Fourth of July when they build to the grand finale and shoot the works.”
Ben sipped his cold coffee. “Yeah, pretty frantic everywhere.”
“Look at Europe!” Shorty leaned in close. “Monsoon rains melting the snow, rivers busting their banks.”
“Everyplace has something bad going on. Ready for year four?” Ben asked.
“Before we go there, I’d like to say something. What we’re doing has never been done before. Looking into the future has always been the province of the Lord.”
Ben swung away from the keyboard. “We’ll have to make sure it’s a power to be used only to help mankind. Never to harm.”
Shorty patted a hand-stitched Justin boot. “Let’s go to the next year. Don’t think we’re gonna like whatever’s coming, but I got my boots on, so I’m as ready as ever I’ll be.”
Ben launched into year four. He stopped when he got to April. “Hey! Where’d the storms go?”
Shorty scratched his blond chin stubble. “Look, Ben. Pink blotches all over. Big time drought!”
They studied the wide belt of pink patches wrapping around the earth, extending from the equator thousands of miles north and south.
Ben waved a hand at the monitor. “Can this be right? Most of the world drying up?”
“Strangest drought pattern I’ve ever seen. Just about every last speck of wet weather’s moving to the polar regions.”
Ben checked worldwide ocean temperatures and currents, but all the normal indicators of an El Nino or oscillation effect were missing. This was something quite different. He clicked to five years out.
Shorty muttered, “Pink patches remind me of a gal I used to know wore polka dot underpants. But these blotches are humongous. Thousands of miles across.”
Ben ran the cursor up and down the screen. “General drought digging in between the fifty-degree parallels. Scattered exceptions.”
“Go out to years six and seven,” Shorty said. “See if the dang thing’s still there.”
Ben clicked and stared. “What do you make of this?”
Shorty craned his head over Ben’s shoulder. “Whoa there. Spots are a deeper red. Looks like the planet’s come down with a case of the measles.”
“Redder means hotter.”  Ben switched to a blowup of North America, then zoomed in to a close-up of the red spot hovering over the plains states. He tweaked the focus and resolution, zoomed back out a little to make sure the boundaries of the area were clearly defined. Shorty hitched his chair up close. They stared at the screen a long time, bodies tense, thrust forward.
Finally Ben sagged back in his chair and looked at Shorty. “As bad as it looks?”
Shorty tucked his red western shirt into boot-cut jeans. He stretched to his full six foot five and bent down to look again. “All I can say is, this’s weirder than a cow with twelve tits.” He put his finger on the spot, then the projected date. “Is that what the simulation is telling us? This is the way things’ll be seven years from now?”
“Exactly. That’s what the model says.”
Shorty’s voice was uneasy. “I know this can happen on someplace like Jupiter. But here? On our own planet?”

BOOK REVIEW: The Sylvan Horn by Robert Redinger

The Sylvan Horn Book One of the Sylvan Chord is a Young Reader Action Adventure.

Efkin is a young Elven Lord who joins a quest to hunt for the Sylvan Horn and break the Runes that are about to destroy the world.

The Elves have always been protected in their realm from outsiders but chaos is ruling and the boundaries that once protected the Elves are failing.  Trolls have been entering the forest and killing all they come across, the Elves wish to broker peace but the Trolls want no part of it and a battle ensues.  It is there that they learn that the Trolls are able to call upon magic, a very rare and uncommon event.  Trouble is brewing and its up to Efkin and his party to find out who is behind the Troll advancements.

Following the puzzles set before him, Efkin leads his group to the one place Elves are not able to go or they will die.  The Humans have the Horn and it lies hidden in a mountain of iron and only those brave enough will journey beyond the borders in order to return the balance.

Along the journey, Efkin learns much about himself and the Horn, as the mysteries unfold, Efkin is lead to the power that is behind the upheaval and the truths that lie before him.

I thought this was a decent read, it had some great characters and the plot is a believable one.  I thought the book at times was written rather quickly without enough detail to the situation and the reader was left to reread certain passages to make certain they understood them.  Other times the books pace was great and you were immersed into the story and felt the need to finish the quest with Efkin and his group.

I liked how sinister the land of Humans with their death giving iron was written.  I enjoyed reading about the worries and wonders of Efkin as he drew closer to his destination as well as learning the history of the races and their relationship to iron.

I liked the elder Elves and the powers that they had, however, I found they always showed up when they were needed and the reader wasn't giving much in their back story which made me feel like they were an outside piece of the story which didn't allow for their natural blending into the story.

I would give The Sylvan Horn a three and a half stars out of five.  The story does pick up and slow down about halfway and you don't feel as rushed as you read it.  I would've liked to have seen more magic and more back story involving the characters; I didn't really get a feel for many of those who were involved with the plot.  However, I can see great potential in this series and would love to continue reading to find out the final outcome of Efkin and his quest of the Slyvan Chord.

SYNOPSIS:
Before the days of men, there were elves. In a time they were great and powerful, the first dwellers, the brightest ray of dawn upon the earth. They brought light and music to the world and every breeze that stirs and wave that crashes still echoes with the wonder of the fair folk.

But a foulness is brewing in the east, where men deal in sorcery. They summon dire forces, unleashing a terrible power into the world. And the elves, once immortal, now fade from the earth. But knowing that all sorcery comes from Runes that were carved ages ago, Efkin, a young elf lord, races to find and destroy the hidden Runes before all is lost. He sets out to recover the horn of his ancestors that long ago summoned the forces that shaped the world. Only the horn has the power to break the Runes. He journeys into the east, but comes too close to the heart of sorcery and does not dare blow the horn. If he is tainted by the poison of the Runes the horn will sound a ruinous note that could spell the end of the earth.

BOOK REVIEW: The 58th Keeper by R.G. Bullet

The 58th Keeper is a Children's Action Adventure.

Archy Bass is very non-descriptive, he has plain features and a bowl shaped haircut.  He attends an all boy school as part of an agreement between his foster care mother and the school.

Archy is lonely, stays in the shadows and tries to stay out of Headmaster Elms' path.  That is, until the day that Archy meets Vincent, billionaire son without the silver spoon in his mouth.  The two of them hit it off right away and one day Vincent arranges for Archy to go on a working archaeology holiday in Greece.

Archy loves his vacation and on one of his excursions to the beach, he runs into a rug merchant, Alturus, who exchanges a magical rug with Archy's walkman.  Archy has no idea how to use it but when the Kurul, a huge warrior race of Giants, realize he has it, all anarchy breaks loose as Archy tries to survive their assaults.

Alturus is the 57th keeper and has passed the mantle over to Archy, however, Archy must prove to the council of Sentinels that he is worthy of being its 58th keeper.  Along the way, Archy must uncover the secrets of the rug, or Shroud, and stay one step ahead of the Kurul.

I enjoyed reading this and watching the story unfold.  I was mystified with the rug and all the actions it can perform, let's just say it can do more than flying.  I thought the build up of Archy was great and the reader really comes to feel for his life situation.

I thought the Kurul sounded scary and formidable and I wouldn't want to have to put my wits up against their hunting skills.  There are actions that happen to the rug that act like a beacon in which the Kurul are able to zone in on and if you don't always know what they are, well, it can prove to be life threatening at times.

I couldn't help feeling at times that it was reminiscent of Harry Potter.  Archy and Harry's home life are somewhat similar in that they are both orphans being raised by people without their best interest at heart.

I would give The 58th Keeper a three and a half stars out of five.  I thought the pace was a little slow and the action scenes were too short in description and action.  I often had to backtrack to find the pace again as it went from slow to action and my mind was unprepared for the quick switches that occurred.  However, it is a very interesting read and I would love to read more by author, R.G. Bullet, I was not disappointed with this read and would definitely read more of R.G.'s work.

BOOK REVIEW: Served Cold by Chuck Waldron

Served Cold is a General Fiction Action/Advenutre.

As Walter Parker lay dying from cancer, he needs to tell the truth to his son, Sean, about his life and his true identity.

Sean was born Jason Marshall Powers-Viel; his parents, Jennifer and Marshall were very much in love but one thing stood in the way of their happiness.  Their fathers absolutely loathed each other and the young adults are told never to meet again.

Love happens in some of the strangest places and the two couldn't deny their love.  After Jenn gets pregnant and her father, Greg, learns of the affair, he becomes enraged and orders the beheading of Marshall.  After the package has been delivered, a vengeance like no other erupts and Jennifer, the baby she is carrying and her father's bodyguard, Rocky, are on the run; trying to stay two steps ahead of Skipper Veil and his henchmen.

After Jason is born, things go awry and Rocky is now on the run with an infant boy in his care.  For years they hid, changing their names and identities, however, Jason never knew of his beginnings, he truly believed himself to be the son of Rocky, who is now Walter.

Sean has much to consider as he absorbs this information about his past and he can feel the anger building within him.  And all Sean wants now...is revenge!

I thought Served Cold was a decent read.  I loved the way the story unfolds, through the memories of a dying man.  The shock as the story uncovers was intriguing and one couldn't help but continue with the story to see its outcome.

I enjoyed the story development and found myself wondering how Sean was going to deal with all that he had learned.  The confusion and distrust that surrounded him as he returned home to his loved ones and how he resolves those issues was believable.

I loved reading about all the Canadian content, being a Canadian myself, I knew relatively where the author was explaining as you sped through the streets trying to make get away from the chaos.  I loved reading about Toronto and her surrounding areas and thought it was great that the majority of the stories setting took place there.

I would give Served Cold a three and a half stars out of five.  While I enjoyed reading the story, I wasn't sure what the point of it all was.  I never understood the vendetta betwixt the two families, it was never properly explained, so I was left with an empty feeling as to why any of the events occurred.  I never really got to feel much for the couple, Jenn and Marshall, and wished there had been a bit more back story concerning the two.

The writing style is great and the author does have a way of capturing your attention and anyone who reads this would find it enjoyable.  There are mild expletives as are the  graphic situations found throughout the pages.

SYNOPSIS:
For two families, revenge served cold is not on the menu. Fuelled by a long-standing feud between the clan patriarchs, nothing less than hot-blooded vengeance will do... Called to the bedside of his dying father in Atlanta, a young man never expects what is waiting for him. In a hospital room the man who raised him, isn’t his father. Instead, he learns about his true parents and a feud that went horribly wrong. For years an uneasy balance of power between two powerful businessmen remained intact. But when one discovers his daughter is pregnant and the father is the son of his hated enemy, a deadly game tips the balance. In a violent power play, he orders her lover killed, sending a clear signal to his nemesis. In hot-blooded retaliation, his adversary arranges punishment, a hit on the other family, drawing a special target on the head of the most prized possession: the young daughter. A trusted bodyguard and driver – with a few shady connections of his own – escapes with the mother-to-be to the presumed safety and anonymity to await a birth, a new beginning. But no place on Earth is safe from all-out revenge. As assassins close in, Rocky narrowly escapes with newborn baby Sean and goes into hiding, creating a new identity. Disappearing into another world, he is able to raise Sean in peace for many years. Hearing this incredible story, a young man is drawn to the truth about his family roots and a growing need for some act of revenge, to seek atonement for the parents he never knew. What he discovers when he gets there will force him to make a choice: to succumb to a path set before him by the fate of his heritage, or turn away and forego the desire for vengeance pulsing in his veins?

Five Animals You'll Never Get to See

Recently CNN featured a story about the official declaration of extinction of the Western African Black Rhino. Its close family members, the Northern White Rhino and Javan Rhino, will soon follow. In the United States alone there are 422 animals listed as endangered, and another 166 that are threatened. With the growing human population, now predicted to be over seven billion, many species are becoming extinct due to encroachment on habitat and unrestricted hunting practices. Here are five animals you will never see, not even in a zoo, because they became extinct before your lifetime:

Thylacine: Also known as the Tasmanian tiger, this Australian native was the largest carnivorous marsupial. Looking like a cross between a dog and a tiger, this guy is unique in that it had a pouch similar to that of a kangaroo. Since this carnivore posed a threat to flocks of sheep, they were hunted and killed in order to protect the human food supply. In 1936, the last thylacine was killed. The occasional “sighting” still occurs on the island of Tasmania, although nothing has been confirmed.

Passenger Pigeon: You may have heard the story of the extinction of the passenger pigeon. A mere 200 years ago they were the most common bird in North America, with a single flock reaching more than a billion birds. Just imagine a massive black cloud of birds flying over your house during migration! Unfortunately, because of their large numbers, they were an easy target for people looking for cheap food. By 1914, the last passenger pigeon died in the Cincinnati Zoo.

Caspian Tiger: Any one of the subspecies of tiger is amazing to behold. The Caspian, or Persian, tiger used to be the third large subspecies and roamed the lands of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and other Middle-Eastern countries. Its coloring was similar to the Bengal Tiger, another endangered species. Extinction was the result of ruthless hunting by big game seekers and destruction of environment by urban human development.

Quagga: Take the head and shoulders of a Zebra and combine them with the body and legs of a horse—and voilá! You now have a Quagga. This South African native has been extinct since 1883, when the last quagga died in captivity. Extinction was due to hunting by humans. The Quagga provided meat and leather to humans, but was an unwelcome competition for other livestock when it came to finding grass to feed them on.

Caribbean Monk Seal: Yes, there are seals that live in warm water. One of these used to be the Caribbean Monk Seal who made his home in the Caribbean sea and Gulf of Mexico. In fact, this was the only seal that resided in those waters. Columbus even wrote about this animal when he made his second voyage to America. However, he started a bad tradition, which was followed by many of the other incoming Europeans, of killing these seals to use for food and oil. The saddest part? This animal was only declared extinct in June 2008, although the last sightings were back in 1952.

No More Tears? Johnson & Johnson Hears a Cry

Johnson and Johnson lavender baby shampoo smells pure in my daughter's hair. The bottle says the scent will soothe her to sleep, plus the company's slogan is "No More Tears." Smells good? My baby won't cry? It'll help her sleep? That's a trifecta few mothers could resist. But my pediatrician told me that J&J, the company beloved for baby products, actually puts poison in its suds.

I wondered if she was just being hippie dippy, then I went online. What I found taught me an old lesson again: Trust your doctor. Activists have been pressuring the health care manufacturing giant since May 2009 to remove cancer-causing chemicals from its iconic baby shampoo.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, an international coalition of consumer and environmental groups, finally made -- pardon the pun -- headway. J&J has agreed to change the formula of its shampoo by removing the carcinogen 1,4-dioxane and quaternium-15, a compound that releases the chemical preservative formaldehyde.

All of this comes on the heels of more than 25 recalls from Johnson & Johnson over the past two years. Problems have ranged from glass shards in medicine to nauseating odors in product bottles and painful, defective hip implants.

J&J is wise to take proactive measures and publicize them, says Manhattan public relations executive Eleanor Lapman. "Here's a company whose name was once synonymous with precious safety -- baby products and band-aids are their bread and butter." Facing a PR disaster, the company now has a window of opportunity to be proactive, address the problems honestly, and receive some positive attention.

"They left themselves open to law suits with so many product recalls," says Daniel R. Rosen, a personal injury lawyer in Denver. "But this is a case of consumer activism done right. J&J received scores of letters from customers around the world, threatening to boycott its products. Now the company is taking measures to restore its once sterling reputation and keep consumers safe."

All of this has caused me to reevaluate my brand loyalty. When it comes to my baby, I don't cut corners. To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure that I'll continue to use Johnson & Johnson baby products. Am I willing to pay a little more for organic products if I believe they are safer for my child? Of course I am. I once trusted the J&J brand implicitly, but now I feel duped. Sure, they changed their formula to save their bottom line and their image, but I take little comfort in that. I'm glad they heard the cry of concerned activists, for whom I am increasingly grateful, but, for me, it's too late.
