What is Manilla?

Manilla (manilla.com) is a free web based service that helps consumers better manage all of their household accounts, including financial, utilities, subscriptions and travel rewards programs, in one secure place online. Under a single password, Manilla provides customers with an automated, organized view of all of their account information, text and/or email reminders to pay bills and unlimited storage of account documents that Manilla has seamlessly retrieved for the consumer.

Why is Manilla necessary?

Most people have more than 20 different household accounts, including three to four credit cards, several travel and hotel rewards accounts, multiple magazine and newspaper subscriptions, plus cable, phone, and other assorted utility bills. In order to stay on top of all this, people have to manage daily incoming paper mail, an array of online usernames and passwords, and websites in order to access important account information and take action. Manilla seamlessly retrieves all your account information – current balances, previous payments, upcoming bills due – and stores it for you in one secure place. Most importantly, you need only one password to view, manage and organize it all.

Great Findings in Abandoned Storage Units

The weirdest things can be found in storage facilities. People who have bought old storage units, through Storage Wars have become proud owners of units filled to the hilt with contents, often finding themselves the lucky new owners of priceless artefacts and antiques.

Storage Wars
Storage Wars is the latest in series where abandoned storage units are auctioned off to the highest bidder. Bidders are allowed a brief glimpse into the unit they wish to bid on, but may not rifle through the contents beforehand because the point of the show is that they may or may not end up with something priceless.

Strange Findings
Storage auctioneers, on Storage Wars as well as off the show have seen household and industrial storage bidders walking away with celebrity regalia and interesting antiques. One such bidder found a treasure trove of gold and silver coins worth $500,000, making the profit margin in something of the 1000+ percentile. The storage unit belonged to an elderly woman that had passed away.

Who knew Michael Jackson would have a storage facility amongst the rest of the world’s stored goods. Considering his worth and that of his music and art one would think he’d have his valuables stored on his estate, but that was not case for Michael because his father owned the storage unit and had not paid up the bill. This storage bidding would have becoming a major storage war were it not for the fact that bidders don’t know what’s in their possible future belongings. The lucky recipient of Michael’s father’s unit walked away with over 250 Michael Jackson original tracks, and duet he performed with Tina Turner. There were no legalities involved due to the fact that Jackson was between recording labels when making the tracks.

Another interesting storage unit that was auctioned off belonged to Burt Reynolds. Reynolds, one of the most recognisable faces in Tinseltown, burned his image into our minds as Smokey and the Bandit and now for the museum of kitsch that his storage contents filled to the roof. Regardless of what one considers kitsch, everyone knows Burt Reynolds is a legend and his memorabilia, autographed pictures, cowboy hats, and the infamous horse carriage he built for Dolly Parton, can all be seen up close and personal at the Florida museum.

There are probably a plethora of gems waiting to be uncovered in abandoned storage facilities. People looking for everything from used racking to golden doubloons from the 1820’s Spanish era may just get lucky yet either while perusing the storage auction pages or on storage wars.

Howard Schultz - Business Leader of the Coffee Cult

Many of us have a special relationship with coffee. It’s what we need to socialise or our way to wake up in the morning and part of our routine. Business leader Howard Schultz, noticed from early beginnings while working as marketing manager for Seattle coffee company Starbucks, that everyone has a special taste and way of enjoying the bitter brew. He successfully transformed our morning beverage into an international franchise that holds a majority of international markets and can be enjoyed from New York to Tokyo. So how did the empire of Starbucks come about and what has made Howard the business leader that he is today, being noted in 2006 as Forbes 354th richest man in the USA.

Beginnings of a business leader
Schultz came from humble beginnings of a military father who had become a truck driver after the war. Through athletic prowess at school he excelled and was offered a scholarship for tertiary education, the first of his family ever to have the opportunity. From these humble beginnings one would n never imagine that Howard would have a chain store of coffee outside every possible office lease Tucson, Oklahoma. He went on to study at North Michigan University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communication and ventured into the business world. His first position was a sale agent for Xerox, but quickly worked his way up and began his career in the coffee world, working as the general manager for a drip coffee company before being introduced to work with Starbucks after visiting them as a client.

Why Starbucks was successful
Schultz became marketing manager of Starbucks after initial interactions between himself and the fledgling coffee company. After being sent to Italy on a sourcing trip for product, Howard thought that to be the leader in the coffee business in the US, Starbucks needed to focus on the cafe vibe of Europe to create a place that creates espresso and a place of interaction for customers. Original owners of Starbucks decided not to roll out the new project and Schultz started his own coffee group, only to eventually buy the Starbucks name and create his empire. This shrewd business leader broke the industry by focusing on his keen real estate expertise to buy correct space and refused to allow franchising, keeping his business whole. He left the business in 2000, only to return in 2008 to influence the world market of coffee and return Starbucks to top position with stores outside every office for rent London and other international business capital.

Schultz was also named Forbes Business person of the Year in 2011 for his attempts at job creation in the US market and his effect on US politics in this regard. Howard Schultz is truly a business leader for the ages and a man who changed the impact of coffee on the international market.

The Death of the Dinosaur Fax Machine

Do you remember those archaic machines, allowing you to put all kinds of documents through it and type in a phone number? Then you wait a minute for it to slide the paper slooooowly through as it dials for another minute. Sort of reminds you of the original dial-up internet service?

Those days are long gone for the "dinosaur" fax machine. These days, faxing has gone optimal.

And by optimal, this particular meaning calls for online — online faxing, that is.

Online Faxing

Online faxing is the wave of the future. When you think about it, it's a wonder why it never bothered to come around sooner — after all, e-mail had been around for more than two decades.

However, smartphones are the key. These days communication has been optimized in such a way that you can even fax a document by smartphone! No joke. Online faxing services have their share of apps to use for such brands as the Blackberry, Droid, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. With the kind of memory available in these smartphones, you can fax any document you want with just one touch of the phone.

Imagine if Robinson Crusoe had one of those babies, he'd be off the island in no time.

Other Benefits of Online Faxing

Some of the other possibilities make faxing that much easier than having to slip that piece of paper into the machine and wait for it to beep and swallow it up (like the dinosaur that it is).

You're looking at....
  • No login required
  • Easy composition right on your phone
  • Quick access to contacts for fax numbers
  • Faxing photos
  • Convenient status checks
They should be self-explanatory, but here's some more elaboration. Typically, with these smartphone apps for online faxing, logins and passwords aren't necessary. Can you imagine just how much more convenient that really is?

Additionally, if you happen to want to immediately send something by fax, but you don't have the document — simply type a new one right on the phone, and get to sending it in right away!

Remembering your fax numbers is a breeze since a smartphone's already got the contacts menu for you; and unlike those dinosaur fax machines, you can repeatedly check on the status of faxes. In addition, there's the amusing feature of being able to fax your photos!

Are the Fax Dinosaurs Really Extinct?

Traditional fax extinction seems very possible, especially considering the reviews are so incredibly positive about online faxing apps. Even in office complexes, online and e-mail faxing services are the rage. However, if you're on the move, it's even better with that trusty smartphone.

Access, functionality and a wealth of options — yes, the dinosaurs are dead. And Robinson Crusoe with his trusty Blackberry has just been saved by the Navy — thanks to one online important fax.

4 Different Types of Bankruptcy You Need to Know About

When you or a loved one faces bankruptcy, it can feel overwhelming. Depending on your circumstances, you might not have to lose everything. There are four different types of bankruptcy laws.

When you determine which type of bankruptcy works best for your situation, you can go to a website to find the specific laws for your state.

Chapter 7 Bankruptcy
Chapter 7 bankruptcy is also called straight bankruptcy or liquidation bankruptcy. This type of bankruptcy is available for individuals, partnerships or corporations. When you file for this type of bankruptcy, you're basically asking for all your debts to be wiped out. Most of the time, your property is exempt and won't be taken away. However, sometimes you might find that you need to give up property such as a car or a home if you are behind on your payments or mortgage.

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
If your business is struggling, you might want to consider filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This law is also known as Reorganization. Filing for Chapter 11 can get tricky since there are numerous details involved. If you plan to file for Chapter 11, you might want to strongly consider hiring an attorney.

Chapter 12 Bankruptcy
Chapter 12 bankruptcy law is unique because it applies only to farmers and fishermen. In this type of bankruptcy, an individual who has steps has the opportunity to pay creditors during a specific amount of time using future earnings. This only applies to individuals who obtain income from a farm that is owned by the individual's family or by an individual who has an income from a commercial fishing operation.

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy
Also called Individual Debt Adjustment, Chapter 13 bankruptcy allows you to file a unique plan, which highlights how you plan to pay off your current and past due debts over the upcoming three to five years. Many find Chapter 13 bankruptcy better than Chapter 11 bankruptcy because it allows you to keep valuable property, such as your car and home, even if you are behind on payments. Your plan for payment must include past due bills, the trustee commission, and the percentage of unsecured debt. If you plan to keep your house and car, you must also continue paying all future payments.

In a tough economy, it's difficult to stay afloat, especially when fate throws obstacles in your path. Bankruptcy offers an opportunity to start fresh. Knowing your bankruptcy filing options gives you an edge as you take your first steps toward economic recovery.

This is a guest post from Delbert Pounds. Make sure you check the website of your local bankruptcy attorney for more information about the types of filings. Call and make an appointment to discuss which is right for you.

Cash for Crafts

Learning Pool piggy bank half full of change

Who hasn't seen it? A cursory look at the job market reveals listings for entry-level jobs that require the responsibilities of 3 people in one, and a minimum of a Bachelors Degree. Plus don't forget mandatory overtime and a paycheck that's skimpy enough to make you look like an intern. And do you get medical benefits for the privilege of the job? No, probably not. But this bleak job trend is producing an interesting response, where people are coming up with creative ways to supplement their incomes. Here are just a few...

Arts and Crafts.
Do you have a flair for sewing clothes or making jewelry? How about a chemistry degree that lay fallow until you started making your own soaps and perfumes? More and more creatives are turning their hobbies into supplemental income by taking their products to sell at farmer's markets and independent businesses. And don't forget to get an online shop going like with Etsy and Ebay. True, it may take a while to make enough income to offset the cost of production but with an attention drawing website and quality products you may soon find your “hobby” turning into a new career.

Pet care.
Many animal lovers have started supplementing their incomes by becoming the neighborhood pet sitters and walkers. Not only will you get extra exercise you'll also be helping lonely pets get the attention they need while their adult parents are at work. This line of work often depends on word-of-mouth referrals so if you work with a client who loves you ask them to help spread the word as thanks.

Cooking.
If you've got a gift in the kitchen you might want to look into finding your niche as an exclusive caterer or baker. Time is money, and many wealthy clients would gladly pay for homecooked meals and impressive fare for parties instead of trying to tackle it themselves. Again if the product is high quality then it's only a matter of introducing the right clients to your work, keeping them happy and then making sure they tout your skills. Have business cards made and give them to all of your clients so that they can help spread the word.

No matter what your skills and passions, if you notice friends asking you to assist them on a regular basis on anything ranging from closet organizing to gift wrapping, chances are there are strangers out there who will gladly pay you for it. Follow your bliss and find ways to monetize it, then do good work and get your clients to become your own personal cheerleading team. And soon you'll not only be making extra coin you'll also become an inspiration to others.

The Top Three Forbes Billionaires of 2011

business man with a dollar symbol
The prestigious Forbes Billionaires List is a yearly assessment of the world’s wealthiest business icons worldwide; this year’s much-anticipated list included no less than 1210 billionaires, with their combined wealth totalling a staggering $4.5 trillion. Below is an overview of the top three internationally renowned billionaires on this year’s Forbes list:

warren buffetThird Place: Warren Buffett
The US business magnate, also known as the “Wizard of Omaha”, is a long-time fixture on the Forbes List of Billionaires. Warren Buffett is the chairman and CEO of multinational investment and insurance conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway; he first became a millionaire in 1962 and reached billionaire status in 1990.

Forbes named Warren Buffett as the world’s richest person in 2008, but the billionaire is known for having a heart of gold and donated a large portion of his fortune to charity the following year, so in 2009 he was only ranked at the second-wealthiest person in the USA. Today, Warren Buffett has a net worth of $50 billion, placing him third on the Forbes List of Billionaires for 2011. The 81-year-old business icon and philanthropist says he plans to leave the majority of his wealth to charity, and has urged fellow billionaires around the world - from executive suites Ontario to Omaha – to do the same.

Bill GatesSecond Place: Bill Gates
The Microsoft chairman currently has a net worth of $56 billion, ranking him just ahead of his long-time friend and associate Warren Buffett on the Forbes Billionaires List. He became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire at the age of 31 in 1987, when he made his debut on the Forbes 400 list, and has retained a ranking among the world’s wealthiest billionaires ever since.

Gates is another of the Forbes listed billionaires who has become just as renowned for his charitable contributions as his personal wealth. He and Buffett signed a Giving Pledge last year, stating that they would eventually donate half of their considerable wealth to charitable causes.

slimFirst Place: Carlos Slim Helú
This Mexican-born businessman leads the Forbes Billionaires List by a long way, with a remarkable net worth of $74 billion. This is the second year in a row that Helú has topped the Forbes list as the world’s richest man. He is currently chairman and CEO of telecommunications companies América Móvil and Telemex, as well as conglomerate Group Carso. The leading billionaire on the Forbes list is also on the Biggest Givers list after donating billions of dollars to charitable causes in 2011. That should serve as an inspiration to any CEO of serviced offices Glasgow!

Other entrepreneurs ranking high on the Forbes Billionaires List this year include Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google in 24th place, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who still has some catching up to do from 52nd place. With the 2011 Forbes Billionaires List breaking all previous records for the number of listed billionaires and the total combined wealth, next year’s list promises to be an impressive lineup indeed.

Twitter Receives $300 Million from Saudi Prince

The popular social communication service Twitter received a major infusion of new cash after it was announced that Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the nephew of the king of Saudi Arabia and the head of his own investment firm, the Kingdom Holding Company, invested $300 million in the company.

Investors Flock to Twitter

Twitter has been taking advantage of a strong venture capital market and its own burgeoning popularity to raise funds for the company. Earlier this summer, Twitter raised $800 million from a group of investors, including $400 million from Digital Sky Technologies, the well-known internet venture capital firm led by Yuri Milner. That round of funding valued the company at more than $8 billion.

Meanwhile Prince bin Talal has been looking to diversify his portfolio of investments to include newer technology companies, one of the few areas of the world economy that has seen considerable growth over the past several years. Indeed, Prince bin Talal has seemingly regretted his failure to fully embrace the growth of new social technologies and is hoping that his investment in Twitter will begin to turn that around.

Internet Companies Remain Popular

The growth of Web 2.0 companies has continued almost unabated in 2011, allowing several high-profile internet companies to raise huge amounts of money through initial public offerings. LinkedIn saw its shares more than double in price on its first day of trading back in May. Meanwhile, Groupon managed to raise $700 million in its initial public offering, which was the largest such offering by an internet company since Google, at least until Zynga bested them with its own $1 billion initial public offering just a month later.

As of now, Twitter has shown no interest in going public themselves, following a strategy similar to that of Facebook under the direction of Mark Zuckerberg. Like Facebook, Twitter has wanted to more fully develop its business model before undergoing the scrutiny of becoming a public company. Although more than 100 million people actively use Twitter, the company has still been seeking the optimal strategy to monetize its user base.

Building a Business Model

Over the past two years, Twitter has been attempting to raise advertising revenue through promoted tweets and other such strategies. Although such revenues are minimal compared to their considerable costs, they are growing rapidly. Twitter is expected to more than triple its advertising revenue in 2011 to $140 million when compared to the prior year. In addition, it is estimated that Twitter could nearly triple that figure again within the next two years.

In the meantime, Twitter has needed to continue finding sources of funding to help bridge the gap until the time when they become a profitable company. For the time being, Twitter has had little difficulty in doing this as investors have flocked to the company in the hopes of eventually profiting from a huge public offering in the future.

Of course, such gains from an initial public offering are not guaranteed: Zynga actually saw its share price drop on its first day of trading. However, investors have not shown any reluctance in accepting the risks of investing in young internet companies like Twitter, even at such high valuations. They believe that Twitter has built a successful platform that can sustain the test of time. If that is indeed the case, then Prince bin Talal may have just found himself a very astute investment.

History Of The 1-800 Number...

Ever wondered how 1-800 numbers came to be in existence?  Or how about the journey the number had to travel for the technology to get to where it is today?  1-800 numbers have had a rocky growth, almost failing because of monopolies and cost effectiveness, with determination the concept spread as avenues opened for even the "Average Joe" to easily afford and effectuate toll free calls in their business world allowing their potential customer databases to grow.

On May 2nd, 1967, AT&T introduced the first 1-800 number as a substitute for collect calls and as a way to decrease telephone operator involvement.  Another reason for its creation was to afford businesses a service for their customers enabling them to be able to contact companies from wherever they may be.

At the time this service was known as IN-WATS (Inward Wide-Area Telephone Service) or Wats Lines.  Until 1984, AT&T held the monopoly on assigning 1-800 numbers to subscribers.  Billing was based on average hours usage per line per month and typically averaged about 13-15 cents a minute depending on the traffic that was being billed.

Some of the first companies to use the service included such hotel chains as the Marriott, Hyatt and Sheraton and motel chains such as the Quality Inn as well as Budget Rent-A-Car.  Though it appeared as the popularity of the service grew nevertheless it still failed and it was up to the companies themselves to save the dying venture.

Renting space and hiring their own employees many were able to continue with their own service as AT&T and NorthWestern Bell continued to compete with the growing advancement in 1-800 call centers.  Next the two companies continued to cater their business out of Omaha and would activate service within 24 hours, giving Omaha an advantage over their competitors who would sometimes have to wait weeks for the same service.

In 1966 Alabama became the first state to use the new intra-state communication and by 1967 it had gone nationwide.  The technology was introduced into Canada during 1969/70 and during this time period the two countries technologies did not connect and customers in both countries only options were to call 1-800 within their own boundaries.  At the time, however, only those willing to pay the extra toll fees were implementing the extra connection feature, making the 1-800 basically trapped within its own country due to costly financial services.  In 1982 this barrier was removed making it easily accessible to call numbers from either country.

It was the brilliant mind of Roy P. Weber from Bridgewater, New Jersey in 1978 who invented the 1-800 number (2nd generation).  His patent was assigned to AT&T and in 1982 that patent was put to use and the Data Base Communication Call Processing Method was born, although you will know it commonly referred to as, toll free or the 800 number.

In 1983, the two companies, in addition to Telesystems and First Data Resources developed a method to use Direct Inward Dialing (DID) to handle the incoming traffic no longer needing call centers to handle the whole load.  The DID system is still in use today to handle the incoming calls to call centers around the World.

By 1984 a federal judge ordered Bell's monopoly of 1-800 numbers to cease and the numbers were allotted out to several dozen regional companies.  Competition for 1-800 numbers made it increasingly easy for businesses to use the service and millions of subscribers became possible.  Vanity numbers soon became the norm as the monopoly was lifted and subscribers were given more freedom over their service.

In North America, the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) are often called 1-800 after the original area code which was used to dial them.  These calls can usually be made from any phone in Canada or the United States, although restrictions may apply depending on the provider's service plan.

Initially when a 1-800 number is dialed, the operator determines where the actual physical destination is then incorporates the intelligent network capabilities that are embedded into the program to route the call.  The number is then routed in the normal way after the geographic location has been determined.  Each toll free number around the World has its own numerical prefix affixed to it and does not necessarily always have a 1-800 attached to the number.

In the Spring of 1988, the 1-800 number data base was quickly decreasing in numbers and the 1-888 toll free number was introduced to augment more possibilities via numbers and potential customers.  However, this opened the door for competitive feuding amongst call centers all vying for their share and by 1998 the need for the 1-877 was introduced to further combat the growing competition, then 1-866 by the year 2000 and 1-855 being looked at currently in 2011/12.

Consequently, the Internet, cell phones and technology have changed the face of business and where once only reputable companies were the monopoly holders of 1-800, today anyone can hold a number and run it out of their home business in their basements, if they desire.  Therefore the options are endless as 1-800 numbers become a viable business tool for opening doors into the vast world beyond.

I am participating in a blogger campaign by Bucks2Blog  for 800 numbers and was compensated.  However, the views and opinions are my own.
