Five Ways to Fight the Cold Weather Doldrums

There's no denying it: Those of us in the northern hemisphere are facing colder, drearier weather, and it won't change until next Spring. Even the mentally and emotionally healthiest people often find themselves suffering to one degree or another from winter doldrums. Staving off seasonal affective disorder, as it's officially called, is easier for some than for others, but there is hope in overcoming or at least minimizing this condition.

What is SAD?

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a temporary depression caused by a change in the brain's chemistry that is seasonally oriented. Darker, wetter and colder weather are common triggers for this disease, but SAD can also occur during any season. It's not a separate classification of depression, but it's considered a “specifier” of depression, and depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.

In the United States, SAD has been reported in 1.4 percent of the people in Florida and in 9.7 percent of the people in New Hampshire, the states representing the lowest and highest per capita frequency in that country.

The SAD that occurs during the summer is usually the most severe, even “out-occuring” the winter season, despite common belief to the contrary.

What Are the Symptoms?

People suffering from seasonal affective disorder often experience lethargy accompanied by reduced energy, changes in sleeping patterns —either sleeping more or less than before-- and even elevated but unidentified anxiety.

The classic SAD, is winter-based, that which we call “winter doldrums” and is usually more easily treated than for other seasons.

A. Light therapy: Not referring to a minimal treatment, light therapy is exposure to higher degrees of light, whether artificially or naturally induced. Taking walks during the daytime aids the condition by not only exercising but also increasing exposure to UV rays even on a cloudy day. The fresh air is stimulating, and the increase blood flow from the mild exercise aids in muscle tone, calorie usage and oxygen dissemination.

B. Anti-depression medication: While people might be reluctant to take anti-depression medication, its temporary use can help eradicate the severity of some SAD symptoms and prevent further declination into a more permanent form of depression. Anti-depression medications adjust the brain chemistry and causes an elevation of moods.

However, as many as 20 percent of people who suffer from SAD progress to bi-polar disorder, so it's extremely important to differentiate improvement of symptoms with a manic phase of bi-polar disorder. If you experience mood swings that vacillate up and down, see your physician quickly.

C. Melatonin: Some cases of SAD may prompt your physician to recommend elevated doses of melatonin, which directly affects depression. Doses are carefully timed, however, and the hormone should never be self-prescribed.

D. Proper Diet and Portions: Compliments of the hibernation instinct we all have, the craving for carbohydrates as stored body fuel is elevated in SAD sufferers. Counter the craving with exercise and higher levels of protein and calcium, but watch the size of portions. Eating a few more but smaller meals during the day helps satisfy the craving for food while limiting your caloric intake.

E. Schedule Activities: Keep in close touch with family and friends. Make “girls nights out” or “afternoons at the bookstore or coffee shop” regular occurrences. Take a short course at a local community college or do some volunteering. Human contact during your affected times is very important: It draws you out of yourself, reinforces your self-esteem and allows others to help boost moods. It helps them as much as it does you.

The Road Of Life To Success

When it comes to life and our eventual success or failures along the road and paths of life different people will have different viewpoints and values. Some will say you have it or you don’t – you are what you, you are not what you are not – and it’s all a forgone conclusion. To many it’s all fate and karma. Either you are destined for great things or you are not and there is little you can do to affect the ultimate outcome and result. Others will state that you can affect life and its changes. After all you are in America and no matter what President Obama may say or think – you can do what ever you like and be what ever you want – if you only go out and provide the effort and do the work.

Hence what are some of the tricks of the trade that you can employ to put you onto the righteous path of success and great things?

1. Its Not Wrong to Be afraid:

Some may call it concern. To others its common sense. There is nothing wrong with being afraid and concerned not to put your head in the oven so to speak. Remember the Wizard of Oz. The Lion was not fearful or cowardly – rather he was wise.

One of the biggest lessons of life is knowing how to “pick your battle”. Choose your endeavors wisely and prepare for them with care and thoroughness. This is wisdom.

Only then do you take full action and follow through.

2. Don’t Brag to Others About Your Accomplishments:

Woody Allen had an expression in the movie “Annie Hall”. Those that cannot do teach. And those that cannot teach “teach gym (class)”. The most successful people don’t brag. Ultimately they are low key and keep quiet. If you are a major success, then you probably know and realize that your success is due to the help of others. It’s only the lowest and most menial of types, who think that they are “smarter than everyone else”.

Its best to employ and an attitude of gratitude and be quiet about your accomplishments and not be a braggart.

3. Seek Proper Advice:

Seek proper advice from knowledgeable informed people. A common misconception is not to seek advice as expressed in the phrase “Don’t ask too many people you will only get confused “. That may be true yet the point is to ask experienced help and advice of people who are knowledgeable in the given field, willing to help and will be of great help and time / energy savers to you.

This involved professional people in the given field, or people who have previous experience in a skill area or expertise in the given field or fields. Also take care to involve people of different perspectives and viewpoints. You want to plan and accomplish and task properly and fully. This is the best economy overall. It’s no point in asking 10 people who all have the same lack of expertise or background, or lack and depth of it at your local subway restaurant up there in Grand Cache.

Lastly is the issue of “doing it all yourself” or should you involve others and delegate. Many people are “lone wolves” and like to do all the work themselves. True this way they know the work gets done. On top of that many of these people who work best alone are highly productive and do the work of many. Yet in the end one person can only do so much and for so long. Burnout becomes an issue and “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Sure you may like to do the work yourself and get it done – yet if other people can do “your work” 85 % as well as you – and get a lot more done with a lot less stress and a lot more free time for you – well isn’t that a better route for you for personal success and wealth.

It all comes down in the end to two words and concepts. Success and peace of mind.

SPOTLIGHT: Rachel Thompson author of The Mancode: Exposed

About the Book...

Is it possible to truly expose men? Thompson explores controversial questions like:
  • Can we outrun our DNA?
  • Will we women always be slaves to our talkative nature (apres sex)?
  • Will men never be free of the chains of emotional withholding?
  • Can we transfer man's paper towel changing abilities from garage to kitchen?
It's about all the levels in which we communicate...viewed through Thompson's looking glass of humor and deconstructed with her special brand of snark.

***You will either LOVE this controversial book or you will HATE it. If you don't have a sense of humor, DON'T BUY IT.***
  • Thank YOU for making THE MANCODE: EXPOSED a Kindle TOP 100 bestseller!
I'm over 40. I don't have a blankie. I have vodka.
  • Praise for The Mancode: Exposed -- already #1 Kindle bestseller in Marriage, Parenting & Families AND Parenting & Relationships!

About The Author...

I’m a chick who writes stuff that makes you laugh. My blog has been nominated for funniest blog this year. I’ve been told I write in the style of that Dickens guy. Kidding.

I’m a mom, a wife, and a recovering pharmaceuticals rep. It’s been a long process but I’m doing okay, thanks.

I usually write about men (The Mancode), marriage, kids, being a mom, living in the OC (ya know–being a pale redhead living in a sea of blondes) and vodka. Not necessarily in that order depending on the day.

I also write occasionally about serious stuff, like the death of someone I once loved or lost love–so don’t be shocked if you come visit and don’t see the funny.

Don’t come here looking to find advice about how to be sweet or nice. I’m pretty much allergic to both of those words.

If you want to learn how to find humor in everyday life, well, I’m really not your girl either. Mostly I just laugh at stuff and make up words (See “Refrigeratoritis and Manesia.”) Yet somehow it all seems to work.

And don’t call me cute. (Hint: babies and puppies are cute. Grown women are not.)

Special note to men: I write frequently about “The Mancode” — like how you guys do goofy stuff and we women try and often fail to understand. (Um, change the toilet paper roll much? Yea, that’s what I thought.) If that offends your sensibilities, keep walking, er, typing.

So, welcome to RachelintheOC. Now go read a post or two and find something to laugh at, would ya?

I have to go help my husband find the butter. Again.

In Rachel's Own Words...

I write nonfiction essays. Most are about two pages. I put these essays together into collections. Two collections actually: A Walk In The Snark and The Mancode: Exposed. Both are Kindle bestsellers on Amazon; Mancode even made it into the Top 100 Paid this past week, a huge milestone for any author.

I published my first book last January. The majority of my reviews are overwhelmingly positive. I’ve even had a write-up in the Huffington Post for my indie success and for the work my Indie Book Collective cofounders, Carolyn McCray and Amber Scott, and I are doing – a volunteer group where our goal is to help authors learn how to market and sell their books.

I’ve learned that with this success come negative reviews, many directed at me personally, not at my writing. People make enormous assumptions about who I am as a person without knowing a thing about me. Lots of people told me this would happen; that it’s a true measure of one’s success.

Veteran authors say not to take it personally.

Good advice. Then you get your first review that calls your book “garbage, trash, awful.” Something you’ve worked on for the better part of a year; for some, many years.

What do you do?

It’s important for any author to learn how to deal with the haters. You can’t please everyone. Accept that.

How do I deal with these negative reviews? Here’s my three-part strategy:

1.  Laugh. I write about men and women, vodka, chocolate, and sex. I warn people up front that I write about adult themes and yet people are still offended. That’s funny to me.

Also, I also use those terms humorously, many times as metaphors and yet people are extremely literal, thinking I drink constantly, eat mountains of chocolate, and constantly well, ya know. If I did all those things all the time, I’d be a) too drunk to write, b) weigh 500 pounds and c) well, this is a G-rated blog so use your imagination.

I also write nonfiction. Which means I write about my experiences, not my readers’ because well, I don’t know them. Makes sense, right?

Well, not always. Sure, I write about men and women, so there are universal themes, which the majority of folks seem to relate to. Those who don’t are quite vocal about my inability to write from their perspective (um, what?), or that I must be an alien life form. Okay, then.

I guess I’d have to be a Vulcan to use that mind meld thingy, right?

2.  Analyze. Reviews are good market research. It’s a good idea to understand the issues readers have with your writing. Sometimes it’s not what you’re saying, but how you’re saying it, right?

For example, I use my most popular tweets to begin each essay in The Mancode: Exposed. For people familiar with my blog, my writing or Twitter, this is not a problem. Even my many beta readers and reviewers were okay with it. But I gleaned from my grumpies (as I call them) that hashtags (#hashtags) are an issue. They don’t get it, or they think I have typos. This is valuable information and an easy enough fix (I’ve now added an explanation in my most recent update as well as on my Amazon page).

I even had to explain hashtags to Amazon. #eyeroll

It’s also great demographic data. Trust me, I would not recommend my book for the ladies-who-lunch church book club. #justsayin

3.  Ignore. People assume that since I live in the OC (Orange County, CA) and mention Prada, I must be “well-off.” My book is humor, so I don’t write about the fact that we lost our nice, large home two years ago and now rent a much smaller one, that my Pradas were bought on sale several years ago, and that I do in fact work my tail off, not only for my husband’s business but also as a freelance social media consultant, as well as volunteer hours every day helping authors as a cofounder of the Indie Book Collective.

None of that is funny or all that interesting. Do I correct these people who want to make judgments about me? Nope.

Why? Because I write my books to give people my truth, my view of my life at the time, and share my take on the interactions between men and women, love and loss, and to provide an escape from the daily detritus of our everyday lives.

It’s important to surround yourself with people who support your writing but ultimately, an author must trust their own voice and vision. I don’t take reviews personally, good or bad (though I appreciate the good ones more J).

I do my thing. I’ll keep writing my books, even if only a few people buy them. There’s a wonderful satisfaction in knowing I’m doing what I love, finally, after many years of retail and corporate life.

(I worked at Longs Drugs as a cashier to pay for college. People would lose their um, marbles if I was off a penny on cat food or generic cigarettes.)

Bad reviews are olives in my martini, baby.

I’m writing. My books.

And that’s enough.

Wearable Makeup Trends Off the 2012 Spring Runway

We all know how fashion shows and designers spark off trends that can last months (or years, even!)-especially since these creative minds come up with something new practically every season. Many may criticize some of these trends as simply a revival of a trend in the past, but that's what trends are; they come and go. And sometimes, some of them even continue on to become classics.

While there's no doubt that these new trends are the "in" thing for that specific season, the simple truth is that not everything on the runway can be classified as "wearable" for everyday. And yes, that does apply for makeup too.

Makeup may be adaptable for wear but here are some of the 2012 spring runway makeup trends that are easily and readily wearable.

Bare Face

It seems that this spring, baby skin is in. Fresh faces are frequent pegs on the runway so ditch that heavy foundation and go with a tinted moisturizer or a BB cream instead. Dewy, glowy skin is beautiful and if you have the skin for it, sheer coverage is best. If you feel you need more coverage than that, you can then invest in a good concealer that can cover up blemishes and/or discoloration.

Dolly Lashes
We all know that long, curled lashes are very attractive and can definitely get attention. That's why so many people go for lengthening and volumizing mascaras. To some, that's not even enough-they even go for false eyelashes of all sorts of proportions. If your lashes aren't as thick or long as you want them to be, try layering on mascaras of different formulations after you have curled your lashes. Or if you really want those va-va-voom lashes-falsies are the way to go.

Strong Brows

Eyebrows undoubtedly frame your face. Hardly anybody can pull off a no-brow look. This spring, strong brows are in. After grooming, fill your eyebrows in and brush through them with a transparent brow mascara or gel. If you're feeling a bit daring, you can go with bolder eyebrows which can increase your sensuality-just make sure that you don't overwhelm your face with strong eye shadows.

Tip: Put together a bare face, dolly lashes, strong brows and red lips all together and rock a sultry, sexy look!

Red Lips

Now, red lips are a classic that many women all know and love. This spring, it's back in many different arrays of shades. After all, the shade of red that will look best on you will be determined by your skin's undertone. Nevertheless, red lips are rocking for the fact that you can wear them alone or with a full face of makeup-just don't overwhelm your face with all your other features.

Smokey Eyes

Another classic that has been seen over and over again are smokey eyes, and this time around it's no different. Combine this with another spring 2012 trend-pops of color or silver/white eyeshadow.

Tips to Freshen Up Your Eyes

Did you know that the dark circles of skin under the eyes can age your appearance more than wrinkles and grey hair? Although for some, the discoloration differs from time to time, for others the dark circles persist as a long-term feature.  The reason may be factors like allergies and inadequate sleep. Genetics tends to play a large part too. If you have under-eye bags and wrinkles, there are solutions. Creams containing caffeine can act as a vasoconstrictor, shrinking blood vessels so that they retain less fluid. A cold compress in the morning also helps to constrict blood vessels and drain fluid around the eyes.

What causes those dark spots under the eyes?

It is advisable to assess the problem with your dermatologist before attempting to remedy them. Several factors or a combination of them can trigger the problem. Here are the possible causes:

1. Gluten Intolerance: Wheat flour is a common allergy. A blood test can also determine whether you have celiac disease. You can be gluten intolerant without having celiac disease.

2. Other Allergies: Persistent dark circles may be because of some allergy. It is always advisable to talk to a dermatologist before you come to any conclusion about your allergies. Sometimes these allergies can be taken care of by taking a multivitamin.

3. Nasal Congestion: A blocked nasal passage can cause the veins that drain from your eyes to your nose to become dark and dilated.

4. Skin Thinning: Dark circles maybe the result of natural process of aging. Veins and blood vessels are more obvious as your fat and collagen deplete with growing age..

5. Inadequate Sleep: Stress, insomnia or sleep apnea may affect the condition of your skin and make it look unhealthy and discolored.

6. Overexposure to the Sun: It is no secret that stepping out in the sun without adequate protection can have a harmful effect on skin. This can increase melatonin production.

7. Lifestyle: Poor nutrition, consuming too much alcohol or caffeinated drinks, smoking and lack of exercise contribute to under-eye discoloration.

8. Genetics: Under-eye discoloration may also be because of your genes. When a problem like this runs in the family, dealing with it isn’t easy. Although, it can be dealt with, the results may not be all that great.

What Causes Eye Bags and Puffiness?
Eye puffiness is a type of fluid build-up (oedema) in the tissues around your eyes, called the orbits. The methods to reduce such puffiness are similar to those used to reduce any kind of swelling. These may help:

1. Natural Remedies
Apply slices of cucumber around the eyes for 15 minutes. The cucumber reduces puffiness and refreshes the skin around the eyes.

Apply cooled teabags or an ice cube wrapped in soft cloth to reduce swelling and discoloration. The tannin in a teabag actively helps in the process.

Leave a metal spoon in the freezer for 15 minutes. Take it out and apply it on the problem area. Hold it there until it is warm again.

Cover your eyes with a cotton pad soaked in lukewarm milk for 15 minutes every day to reduce dark circles.

Covering eyelids with slices of apples also helps reduce dark circles and puffiness
Cotton pads dipped in into freshly extracted mint juice and placed on closed eyelids, also helps in treating the problem.

2. Don't Rub Your Eyes
The skin around the eyes is very thin and needs gentleness when touched. If you feel the urge to rub your eyes, you should splash them with cold water. Rubbing eyes can not only lead to puffiness but also fine lines and wrinkles.

3. Get Your Beauty Sleep
Lack of sleep contributes to poor circulation. Try to sleep the same hours each night. Have a good calcium/magnesium support in the form of eating green vegetables or a good mineral supplement to restore adrenal function.

4. Elevate Your Head When Sleeping
You're in a horizontal position for hours, so the fluid retained under your eyes is suddenly being pulled down. Elevating your head while sleeping ensures the fluid doesn't flow downwards too quickly upon waking.

5. Cut Down on Your Salt Intake
Excessive intake of salt cause water retention and is another reason for puffiness under the eyes. Cutting down on your sodium intake can help you get rid of those disgusting puffy eyes.

6. Give Up Smoking
Smoke contains a high-concentration of carbon monoxide. When you smoke, the hemoglobin of the blood remains tied-up with CO and the oxygen carrying capacity of blood is remarkably reduced. This causes discoloration under the eyes over a period of time.

The History Of Ice Cream; The Quintessential Treat

The ice cream has become a household name and a treat for many years and most of us love this refreshing sweet. Over the years it has evolved and has pushed the boundaries in terms of flavors and creations. Recently the most expensive Ice cream sundae was recorded in the history of ice cream time line with costing a whopping $1,000 dollars at the New York restaurant Serendipity 3 called Golden opulence, what’s next! How’s that in the history of the ice cream sundae. Frozen distribution is soaring as the market and need for ice cream is as high as ever in ice cream history and it is obvious people from across the globe still love this frozen treat.  In this fun article we take a stroll down memory lane and look back at the history of ice cream and its origins.

Some of the origins on the history of ice cream timeline date back to the Persian Empire. People would pour concentrated grape juice over snow and eat this as a treat. In 400BC the Persians also evolved their snow covered treat to include a specific chilled food made from rose water and ice, flavored with various tastes that was served to royalty during the hot summer months.

Another of the origins in terms of the history of ice cream dates back to Roman times and to Emperor Nero of Rome. He created the first frozen dessert of a mixture of snow that he actually sent slaves to gather from the mountains with nectar, fruit and honey. The emperor served this cool dessert to his guests from all over the world as a treat after their meals.

Another prominent happening in the history of ice cream was the Governor Bladen of Maryland serving ice cream to his guests after their meals and dates back to the 1700s. Next on the history of ice cream timeline, the fist ice cream shop opened its doors in the United States in New York City in 1776. This was the beginning in terms of history of the ice cream maker.

The history of the ice cream cone is also quite interesting and has played a perfect accompaniment to the ice cream since 1940. The fist ice cream cone was showcased at the Saint Louis World's Fair. The ice cream cone was served by some vendors and proved to be enjoyed by the public.

The popularity of the ice cream is still ever prominent in the sweet and dessert sector across the world with many a refrigerated courier supplying the cool treat across countries. Flavors are evolving and the public are scooping it up. There is sure to be more history added to the history of ice cream.

The Best Bachelorette Party Supplies and Games

Bachelor parties are synonymous with wild fun and crazy times. But there's no reason why the guys should have all the fun when it comes to celebrating an upcoming marriage. The rules have changed and things aren’t limited to boring bridal showers anymore. You don't have to settle for sitting in someone's home while sipping tea and reminiscing about childhood memories. If it's your job to plan your best friend’s bachelorette party,  you can let your imagination run loose with some truly creative ideas. Make it a night where there are no rules and give the bride-to-be a reason to celebrate. She's about to have the most important day in her life, but before that you can give her a party filled with good friends, laughter, and just a few moments you might have to keep secret. Here are some suggestions for great bachelorette party games to get you started.

Truth or Dare - this is a classic game that most people haven't played since they were back in high school. But it's time to dust off your truth or dare skills because it's going to be a lot more interesting now that you have more experiences. This is an easy game to play because you don't have to buy any supplies or extra accessories. If you want to be truly prepared, you might want to come up with a list of questions beforehand. You can also find offshoots of this game designed specifically for bachelor parties at any general party shop.

The Wishlist - this is a great activity that serves as a warm-up for events to come. It basically involves every member of the party coming up with a list of certain celebrities that they would like to “spend time with”. Whether it's going on a date, a trip to the library, or something much more romantic, it's fun to learn about the secret crushes of all your friends. If you want to make it just a bit naughtier, you can extend the rules beyond celebrities into people in real life.

Drinking Games – you’ve probably already played a classic drinking game before. It's easy to organize and that goes with any type of activity. You can play it while watching television or listening to a particular song. You might also find that some of the best romantic movies make a great accompaniment for this game as well. Make sure to amp-up the fun level by having plenty of drinks on hand with enough variety so things don't get boring.

Karaoke Carousel - all you need to play this game is a good karaoke machine, and it's something that you can use long after the party is over. It basically involves loading up the machine with different songs and then singing whatever comes up. Most modern machines will come with this feature and it's a nice way to incorporate music and crazy times into the night. You can even purchase a horrible model that allows you to take this game anywhere you happen to go.

Crazy Bridal Dress - this is perhaps the most traditional game on the list, and it's definitely a must-have. It basically involves dressing up the bride-to-be in a crazy costume design by other members of the party. You can join her by dressing up yourself while turning into a contest or fashion show. Of course the game isn't complete until you go out into the city to show off among the general public.

Extras and Toys - these are just a few simple selections and there are plenty more available. There are some websites that specialize in bachelorette party supplies and toys and you can usually get a good deal on shipping if you buy everything all at once. It's actually quite fun to take a look at some of these games because they can be quite raunchy. Just make sure that you keep the bride in mind and you don't purchase anything that will make her feel uncomfortable.
