I Ain't Afraid of No Ghost

We have a fascination with the idea of a haunted house. At Halloween we like to go to haunted houses. We make movies like the Amityville Horror and weird movies like the Burbs. Laws have been passed requiring a potential home buyer if there has been a murder in a house.  Would you ever live in a reputedly haunted house? What if you got a great deal on it? Never fear though because most “supernatural” events can be naturally explained, but only most.

Everyone has probably heard a creak or a groan coming from a door or the attic or even the basement. Sure it could be the reanimated remains of a zombie coming to eat your brains, but it probably isn’t. In fact, it is probably just weather related, especially if you have an older home with a lot of wood in it. What happens is that during colder weather the wood expands and puts pressure on the support around it and creates creaks as it expands. During warmer weather it will creak as it shrinks back down. In fact, during the winter it is common for doors and windows to stick due to the expansion. Another common creak maker is hardwood floors. They always creak under the weight of steps. Wooden staircases are another common culprit.

Things that go bump in the night could be a madman dragging an axe behind him coming to get you but more likely not. If it is windy then it probably trees or bushed brushing against the roof or walls. Routine trimming will keep that problem down to a minimum. Overhanging dead branches will often snap and break off, only to land on your roof as well.

Few things can make a disturbing ruckus like wildlife can. A cat’s meow may sound like a banshee’s wail in the night. That shadow see moving outside is most likely a possum. Raccoons in particular can be a noisy nuisance. They can knock over trash gets, dig through trash and rustle around in the bushes. If your motion sensor lights suddenly it’s probably not a werewolf, more likely it is just a random rabbit or armadillo. Okay the bat flying around at night might be vampire but that’s about it. If not it might be a ghoul coming to collect the mortgage.

Many other things have perfectly natural explanations as well. Two liter, plastic bottles often pop with air bubbles filling out. Ice will make noise as it drops into the refrigerator dispenser. If you ever feel something touch your head in the night it is your head board. Unless you don’t have a head board, then you better run.

Parallel Lives and the Parallel Universes Theory

Parallel lives are said to be a simultaneous, multiple incarnation by same over-soul and it justifies or explains the idea of how reincarnation really works and resolves the conflicts in an individual’s life. Basically there are two main ideas which define parallel lives the most. The first idea was taken from an ancient Greek Plutarch known as Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus in Roman and the second idea was taken from the concept of reincarnation and ascensions.

This first concept was rooted from the Plutarch’s Lives of Noble Greeks and Romans where it is a patterned series of biographies of famous men in the late first century arranged in tandem with accordance to their common moral virtues and failings in order to illuminate their similarities. These biographies contain twenty-three pairs and each pair involves of one Greek and one Roman individual, as well as another four unpaired, single lives. As defined by dictionaries, it literally means embodied in flesh which refers to the conception and birth of a sentient creature which manifests the entity of God or force who’s the original immaterial nature.

According to Plutarch, his motivation to do this work is not for the purpose of identifying the history of Greeks and Romans but rather exploring the influences of each characters life and destinies of these famous individuals, may it be good or bad. The interest of his work is primarily for an ethical reason for Plutarch wants to prove that Greece has more impressive past remote experience that Rome due its men of action and achievements. According to ancient history, Plutarch’s Lives manuscripts were first published in the 10th and 11th century wherein the first edition appeared in Florence, Italy in 1517.

Then on, several editions were printed in English by Jacob Tonson in the 17th century starting with 5-volume edition in 1688 and following editions were printed during the years of 1693, 1702, 1716 and 1727.  However, the first pair of lives, Epaminonda-Scipio Afrinacus no longer exists and some lives are shortened which obviously contains gap or tampered with other writers. It is also stated that the life of Alexander is one of the five surviving secondary or tertiary sources about Alexander the Great which includes the anecdotes of incidents that appear only in the Parallel Lives of Plutarch.

At present, Plutarch’s lives are translated according to key abbreviations such as D for Dryden, the famous editor in chief to the first complete English Translation, G for Project Gutenberg which contains several versions of the 19th century translations which includes the translation of the English poet Arthur Hugh Cloughs, L for LacusCurtius which has the Loeb translation of Bernadotte Perrin and lastly P or the Perseus Project which contains several paired lives which are written in Greek and English according to the Loeb edition of Bernadotte Perinn and abbreviated versions of Thomas North translations. Since the publication of Parallel Lives, Plutarch’s work has been bombarded with criticisms due to his lack of judicious discrimination in using authorities as well as consequent errors and inaccuracies.

However, historians praised his work due the abundance of citations and large number of valuable events and information that became a big help in filling up numerous gaps in historical knowledge. Recognition is also given for the dynamism and warmth of his portrayals as well for his moral sincerity and enthusiasm in writing those biographies in such that large circles of readers throughout the ages are attracted to read his work.

Aside from the Plutarch’s lives and biographies, another different point of view regarding Parallel lives where raised specifically in the area of reincarnation and parallel worlds. Some individuals think that the concept is said to be a non-physical life that is very different from the life a person at present wherein the express aspect of the human being are often complementary to their own life.

The main point of this idea is that an individual’s life today may lead into an opposite parallel life in the future such that if a person is very rich today, that person may become very poor in his parallel life in the future as well as individuals who are happily married now may lead into a lonesome and single individual in his future parallel life. The concept of this idea is quite tricky for individuals need to learn to accept the reality of the world and avoid criticizing other people in order to have a clear and stable mind.

It emphasizes the importance of avoiding psychological unstable state of thinking for it might exacerbate instability of thoughts for stabilizing once thought provides more opportunities to reduce the number of judgments an individual holds towards others which means as an individual judges another individual, his opinion will become a part of himself in a non–physical parallel life that may affect his way of living in the future. Parallel Lives takes up a lot of energy and that energy is very useful in the ascension process or the sequence of internal shifts of consciousness leading to a more progressive and higher vibrational state. Given with these facts and ideas, the concept of Parallel lives has only shown that reincarnations really do exists as evidenced with the idea of change of an individual’s parallel life as he failed to maintain the stability of his mind.

Although the ideas regarding Parallel Lives are somewhat different from each other as Plutarch’s idea is based on his series of biographies while the other concept is based on reincarnations and ascensions, it only shows that these ideas have linked with each other to come up with a common main point. The main point of both ideas is that each individual has a series of Parallel Lives or reincarnations which traveled from one generation to the other to evaluate oneself based on his deeds and achievements in the past so that it can be improved and changed in order to resolve certain conflicts within there lives as they move on to their next parallel life.

BOOK REVIEW: Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fischer

Zombies Don't Cry:  A Living Dead Story ~ Book One

Author:  Rusty Fischer
Reading Level:  Ages 12 & Up
Paperback:  300 pages
Publisher:  Medallion Press (May 1, 2011)

In the sleepy town of Barracuda Bay, Maddy Swift leads the life of a fairly typical teenager, but while attending a party one night, Maddy is struck by lightning and awakens to realize she has been reanimated and turned into a zombie.

While becoming acquainted with her new "lifestyle", Maddy stumbles upon two unexpected undead chaperones, fellow students, Dane and Chloe, who begin to teach her the ways of zombie life, including defending the populace from Zerkers~the bad zombies.

Together, on Prom Night, the three teens must ultimately defend Barracuda Bay High from an all~out zombie Armageddon.

I love the writing style of author, Rusty Fischer, it is easy to read, often times comical and his main characters are heart~warming to follow.

I loved Maddy and her awakening into the zombie world, where she is unsure of her next move but glad to have her Zombie Guide in case she screws it all up.  I love her honesty and her approach to zombies, from renting B~grade zombie movies to just winging it as she goes along, it was enjoyable to this reader.

I loved that zombies have been given personalities and a can fall in love, get angry, worry...they just cannot cry.  I love the different classes between the zombies, with zombies now being those who have died by a certain circumstance and have found themselves reanimated versus those who have been bitten, such as, zerkers.  It often makes for a comical outlook with some gore thrown in for good measure.

I love zombies and would read anything on them and Zombies Don't Cry is worthy of four out of five stars for its genre.  I was quite impressed with the story, the characters and the new classifications of zombies that Fischer has incorporated.

I'm still out on the whole Guardian/Sentinel aspect of things.  I wish Fischer had given a bit more back story into these two entities as it was their involvement that left the most holes for me.  However, I'd love to read more by Rusty Fischer, he makes zombies good~!!

Vamplayers by Rusty Fischer

Vamplayers is a YA Paranormal Fantasy.

  • Reading level: Ages 12 and up
  • Paperback: 384 pages
  • Publisher: Medallion Press; Original edition (December 13, 2011)
  • Language: English
When Lily Fielding is turned, she has no idea what is happening or why, all she knows is that Rick Springfield's "Jesses Girl" is playing in the background as her and her mother are overcome by Vampires.  As she watches her mother try to devour her, Lily prepares for her death but is saved by the Saviours and becomes a Sister at the Afterlife Academy of Exceptionally Dark Arts.

There are two paths one can follow at the school, either become a Saviour or a Sister.  Everyone wants to be a Saviour, a select group of people who hunt and destroy vampires.  However, Lily is just a Sister of The Sisterhood of Dangerous Girlfriends and to add to the insult, she's third sister to Cara and Alice and truly has no say in any of the adventures the girls find themselves upon.

When the girls are given their next mission, going undercover in a secluded, posh high school, the girls believe the job will be an easy one as they plan their identities.  However, before the first day of school is over, Lily is on her own as her sisters get wrapped up in Bianca, the socialite who has it all while Lily follows Tristan, the Vamplayer looking to turn the whole school into a bloodfest.

Lily is unsure who to trust and she cannot figure out why her sisters are acting weird, almost like they have forgotten their mission and who they are.  Lily believes Tristan may have something to do with this and continues to bait him, however, along the way, Lily's own feelings come into play and she must come to realize that what she has come to believe all along, may not be what it seems.

When Lily finds herself fighting a Royale vampire of the oldest blood, she must use all of her skills and wits, for her sisters are not there to help her and there is no way to contact The Saviours to come and bail them all out.

I quite enjoyed this read and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a YA Vampire love story.  The outcome was great and the author doesn't leave the reader hanging with impossible and unanswered  questions, everything is tied up nicely and leaves the reader wishing for more.

I enjoyed the writing style of author, Rusty Fischer, it was fresh and comedic in places.  I found the dialogue enjoyable as well as the characters.  I read this book in just a few hours, it has enough to keep the reader glued to the pages if you are reader of paranormal YA and I hope to read more from the Sisters.

Though I figured out who the vampires were, it was still a great unfolding of events, the predictability didn't offend me as much as it usually does, for the writing style/technique more than makes up for anything that could be lacking to the reader.

I would give this a 4.5 out of five stars, I thought that it would have been more beneficial to have had more background information on Lily, Alice and  Cara, I just didn't feel for Alice and Cara as I felt I should have and I believe it was because I didn't know much about why they were there or what makes them tick.  I'm reading Rusty Fischer's "Zombies Don't Cry" and I must say he is a new YA paranormal favourite author of mine.  Keep up the groovy work Rusty~!!

SYNOPSIS:
At the Afterlife Academy of Exceptionally Dark Arts, Lily Fielding is a measly trainee who dreams of one day becoming a Savior—those who visit vampire-infested high schools and put down the undead with their deadly crossbows. When Lily and her classmates Alice and Cara begin their latest assignment, it seems like just another run-of-the-mill gig: they’re to simply spot the Vamplayer—part vampire, part player—identify the popular girl he’s set his sights on, and befriend her before the Vamplayer can turn her to do his bidding. Before long, however, the Vamplayer sets his sights on Lily's friends, and she is left to face the threat alone while protecting her friends from the dark forces she has sworn to resist.

Although Tatiana is about to discover that her magic is just as strong as her twin and that she has her own gifts.

Grasiella Najera
Oldest of the twins, she is very active with martial arts and track and field. The craft of magic comes easy to her and she is a diligent student.

While visiting her grandmother in Hawaii, she has found her time spent discovering the truth about family secrets and how they can affect all of their lives.

In the process of learning about their unique heritage, Grasiella and her twin may end up saving not only their own lives, but the fates of everyone they had come to care about.

SPOTLIGHT: Lizzy Ford author of Damian's Oracle

About the Book...

Damian’s Oracle
By Lizzy Ford

Genre: sweet paranormal romance

Inspired by Slavic mythology, Damian’s Oracle is the entree into the ongoing battle between good and evil over the fate of humanity. The White God, Damian, and his Guardians protect the world from the Black God and his monsters while rescuing Naturals – humans with extraordinary paranormal gifts – from the Black God, who would kill or convert them.

Caught in the middle is cool-headed Sofia, a Natural whose gift will tip the scales in the war. Sofia begins her transformation from human into oracle, the first in thousands of years. Damian rescues her from the Black God in time to complete a ceremony that will bind her to him for eternity. Sofia struggles with her new world and her role as an oracle and Damian’s mate while haunted by a mysterious man from Damian’s past who’s supposed to be dead. Unbeknownst to her, her link to the dead man may be all that saves Damian, his Guardians, and the fate of humanity.

While he wants nothing more than for the petite beauty to take her place at his side like the oracles of legend did his White God forefathers, Damian can’t quite rationalize having to win her over instead of command her. Further complicating his life is the sobering realization that there are spies in his organization who are helping the Black God take out his Guardians. Damian must help Sofia reach her potential fast, especially when a threat from his past returns.

Read the Excerpt...

Sofia froze as the scene straight out of her vision—the little boy, Cody, spread-eagled in the street near the storm drain—materialized before her. They boy’s mother was hysterical, screaming at once at the driver and her dead son. Coldness seeped through Sofia as she watched the familiar scene before her. In the distance, she heard her cell phone ring. It ceased and began to ring again. As if in a dream, she pulled it free and answered.

“Ms. Fast?” The deep baritone voice pierced her thoughts. “This is Damian Bylun. You left a message with my receptionist?”

Her world was beginning to spin as she realized her vision had come true. Her legs felt weak, and she sat heavily on the curb, struggling to control her breathing so she didn’t pass out.

God, what’s wrong with me? I saw him die …

“Pardon?”

Realizing she clenched the phone in her hand, she locked the screen and sat staring at the asphalt. Someone touched her, and visions flared across her mind. A pretty brunette, mugged in a back alley, raped and killed.

“Hey, are you all right?” someone else asked. As the man took her arm to help her stand, his haggard face appeared in yet another vision. An older man with dementia left to rot and finally die in an old folks’ home.

“Get away from me!” she cried, tearing her arm away. She fled, staggering as she bumped into more people and more visions flashed. She ran until the cold air burned her lungs and the people were far behind her. She retreated to her apartment, breathing raggedly, with cold tears stiffening her cheeks.

She closed and locked the door behind her. She froze when she saw the disaster that was her apartment. Everything was overturned or shredded, from the furniture to the bookshelves to the TV lying on its face. The windows were open and the apartment cold.

Her headache was now a migraine, and she shielded her eyes against the light from the street that filtered past her honeycomb blinds. She all but staggered into her bathroom. She wrenched open the medicine cabinet for the most powerful of the drugs Dr. Mallard prescribed for her and slammed the cabinet shut.

Her eyes were fully silver, swirling and glowing in the dark bathroom. Whatever she was, she wasn’t a normal human.

What is wrong with me?” she screamed, slamming her fists against the mirror.

Her blood spattered on the wall, and buzzing filled her ears. She sank to the floor. Her phone began to ring again as she slid into a dead faint.

In Georgia's Own Words...

The Phenomenon of Reader’s Regret

I think we can all agree that with the exception of a few men, women dominate the romance genre. Women write it, women purchase it, and women review it, so it isn’t surprising to see most romance novels are not written from the males’ point of view. I see a growing demand for readers requesting the same story from a different character’s point of view, usually the male’s point of view because it was originally written from the woman’s point of view. I chose to write Blood of Anteros from Curry’s point of view, not only because he is male, but also the vampire in this complicated relationship between a human and vampire. I wanted my reader to discover the surprise of his feelings as he discovers them for himself.

Let’s get point of view straight before we go further. I’ll make this lesson brief for those of you that hated english and lit. Point of view is the narrator’s vantage point.

First-Person Point of View: Me, Myself and I
The narrator is one of the characters and explains everything through his or her own eyes using words like I, me, my, and mine. This narrator doesn’t know other character’s thoughts, although the reader will see directly into the mind of the narrator. This POV allows the story to feel more like reality and gives it a more personal appeal. The reader knows only as much as the narrator knows and he or she may withhold information to create tension and suspense.

Third-Person Limited Point of View:
The narrator tells the story from one character’s view using the words like he, him, she, her, they, and them. The narrator knows what one character thinks and feels, but limited to what others say and do. The narrator can provide readers with more information about characters and events than first person POV.

Third-Person Omniscient Point of View: Knowing It All
The narrator looks through the eyes of all characters, but is not a character in the novel. The narrator is “all-knowing.” It gives a full view of all events and character.

What are the benefits to First Person Point of View? The thunder before the lightning. The breath before the kiss. The anticipation of what could happen. I get the most satisfaction out of experiencing the emotions and feelings of a character. I want to know his or her thoughts inside and out and I think that’s why we are seeing a growth in books being rewritten from another’s view. More specifically, we as women want to know how the male heroine truly feels about the woman he loves. We read to escape reality for a brief time into a fantasy world created by an author.

What causes readers to demand the rewriting of a completed story? I call it Reader’s Regret and it is intoxicating. It’s how awesome novels end. It causes readers to flip back to the front of the book to begin rereading what he or she just finished because once could never be enough. I define Reader’s Regret as that sickening feeling experienced when the reader realizes the story has come to an end, yet they want more. Wow! If you haven’t experienced Reader’s Regret, you’ve been reading the wrong books.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on Reader’s Regrets. Please list any books that you read and loved so much it made you sick to be finished with them. I’m always looking for my next great Reader Regret read.

Ghostly Travels: Haunted Places in the UK

Tragic tales of murdered lovers, grisly hangings of innocent witches, and stories of vampires, demons and more can be found through Britain’s history. For the curious amateur ghost-hunter, the UK is a dream destination filled with dreary old castles, pubs and houses populated with spectral inhabitants. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, spooky stories are always fascinating. Here are some of the best spots in the UK for scaring the living daylights out of yourself:

Highgate Cemetery, London

This spectacular gothic cemetery features many impressive examples of Victorian architecture, and its sombre atmosphere is made even more unnerving by the stories from the 1960s of the dark figure with glowing red eyes who was reported by several passersby. The stories also include tales of mutilated animals, leading many to believe that the spectre was actually a vampire.

The Friends of the Highgate Cemetery offer tours throughout the cemetery, sure to be filled with many spooky tales.

Pendle Hill, Lancashire

The Lancashire countryside was where the most famous witch trial in British history took place, and ten so-called “Pendle Witches” were sentenced to death by hanging in 1612. These women, who were only innocent victims in a witchcraft-obsessed era”, are said to haunt the nearby village of Newchurch at the base of the hill. Pendle Hill is located near Clitheroe, Burnley and Colne, and Newchurch village is located only a mile away from Rawtenstall.

The Red Lion, Avebury, Wiltshire

If you are looking to go grab a pint in a historic pub with a few ghostly drinking partners by your side, this 400-year-old inn certainly has its share of long-dead patrons. The pub itself is located within the famous stone circle of Avebury, and is surrounded by many rumours of witchcraft and superstition. Keep an eye out for Florrie, an apparition who seems to have a soft spot for men with beards. The story goes that her husband was a soldier who went to war. When he returned and saw her in another man’s arms, he snapped and killed both her and her lover and dumped them in the well which is now the main attraction in the pub. Guests have also experienced cold spots, orbs of light, and visions of ghostly children. It’s £40 per night to stay over, if you dare.

Minsden Chapel, Hertfordshire

A small walk from the town of Hertfordshire leads to this chapel, built in the early fourteenth century to ease the passage of pilgrims. The chapel is now in crumbling disrepair, and is rumoured to be haunted by a ghostly monk who walks up and down the stairs on Halloween night. His phantom presence is always accompanied by tinkling chapel bells and solemn music, and sometimes even the vision of a glowing cross on the church wall.

These are just a few of the fascinating haunted destinations that you can visit if you are curious about the supernatural and want to learn more about the sombre and spooky history of the UK.

Simon Grant produced this content on behalf of Etihad Airways, who are proud to be operating flights to the UK among their portfolio of worldwide destinations.

Learn To Read Tarot Cards

Easily Learn To Read Tarot Cards
Learning to Read Tarot Cards is an Inner Journey

In order to learn about reading tarot cards requires some focus, however, it isn‘t an arduous task. Actually, it can be quite a pleasant activity. The more time dedicated to perfecting the skill of tarot reading, the more you will get out of it. To be an adequate reader, learners will have to become skilled at properly reading the cards. The best tarot readers are very intuitive individuals. They have an innate talent for picking up signs and feelings of others and are able to transfer that information into the symbols on the cards. This doesn’t mean that books about tarot card reading aren’t valuable, but to get any pleasure out of card reading, there must be a personal fascination from the beginning.

-Learning to Read the Tarot Cards

Developing an intimate relationship with the tarot is rewarding. However, you don’t have to be a psychic or clairvoyant. There’s more to tarot card reading than memorizing in sequence from a book. The inspiring card reader must acquaint themselves with the cards by studying and writing down their impressions of them every day, at least for a half hour. The environment where you study should be tranquil and quiet.

To start, take a deck of tarot cards, a pen and a notebook. Select a spot in your residence that induces relaxation. If certain aromas or music helps you with concentration, burning incense, a scented candle or meditative music will do. Let go the world, and go within. After naturally feeling the urge to pick up the tarot card deck, begin shuffling the cards. While doing this, let your mind be free of any anxieties or challenges. Concentrate on slowing down your breathing to put you more in touch with your feelings. Anything that comes to the forefront of your mind, write it down in your journal. It’s important to acknowledge our feelings. Feelings are the pathway to the Soul. This is similar to the same ritual that psychics or mediums use for their impressions. If we fail in this very important phase, the ability to perform a tarot reading is diminished. Repressed emotions have a way of causing us to lose objectivity.

Following a few moments of relaxation, draw a card anywhere from the deck. Lay it down in front of you, and examine it. Write down the name of the card into your journal, and answer the subsequent questions:

-What life lesson does the card portray?
-What do the drawings and imagery represent to you?
-What type of vibrations do you get from the card?
-What is the theme of the card? What is it saying?
-What type of feelings does the card bring out in you?
-How does is the story significant to your own life?

Answering these kinds of questions, will assist you in getting in touch with each card’s meaning. In addition, during these exercises its fine to reference a quality tarot card book. When all is said and done, tarot card reading is a personal journey where you must be the driver and the vehicle as well.

UFOs: Amazing Connections...

Who is Raymond A. Palmer, and what's he got to do with Kenneth Arnold, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The X-Files

Well, Curtis Peebles, in Watch the Skies!, and Carl Sagan, in The Demon-Haunted World, seem to want to make Palmer the "First Cause" of the so-called "Flying Saucer Myth" because he printed the stories of Richard S. Shaver in the 1940's.

The gist of their argument is this:

Ray Palmer was born in 1910, and was crippled in a street accident that left him "a hunchbacked dwarf only four feet tall." To escape his painful childhood, he escaped into the world of pulp magazines, and by the time he was in his twenties, he was selling stories to these magazines. He became a skilled writer for these magazines, and made his living this way during the depression.

In 1938, Palmer was selected as the new editor of Amazing Stories, and he showed a knack for increasing the magazine's circulation by gearing it to teen-age boys and choosing stories that exploited their fascination with such things as Atlantis and Lemuria. So, when he received a letter from a fellow named Richard S. Shaver claiming that he had discovered the secret language of Atlantis, he published it at once.

According to Peebles, and rightly so, Shaver's writings have the earmarks of paranoid schizophrenia. In fact, Shaver had spent several years in a mental hospital. Shaver claimed to be able to read messages inside rocks that he cut open, and later claimed that his welding machine talked to him. Shaver claimed that Atlantis and "Lemuria" had originally been settled by aliens who later built vast underground cities to escape poisonous radiation from the sun, then fled the planet when even this failed to save them. Then, (after the sun had righted itself, we assume) a group of "inferior people" descended into the underground cities and began to use the machines the Atlanteans and Lemurians had left behind. This cost them, though, for the machines gave off radiation that turned them into demonic midgets known as "Deros". They began to use the machines to control events on the earth's surface and even to control people's minds from their subterranean dens.

Palmer rewrote Shaver's rambling letters and published them in Amazing Stories as true, and they became very popular. The circulation of Amazing Stories shot up, and the magazine began to receive huge amounts of mail. Some of the mail spoke of sightings of strange objects in the sky.

In 1948, Palmer began publishing Fate magazine, which was filled with a mishmash of "true" stories about UFOs, the Loch Ness monster, the abominable snowman of the Himalayas, ghosts, psychic phenomena, and the like. He later published Flying Saucers magazine, which was perhaps his most successful venture. Palmer died in 1977.

But is the UFO phenomenon merely the invention of Raymond Palmer? It's quite a stretch from depraved underground midgets to UFOs. The Shaver stories vaguely mentioned round aerial craft, but Palmer never dropped the idea that UFOs came from within a "hollow earth". Besides, UFOs were around before Palmer got into the act.

UFOs and aliens had been on the scene since the turn of the century, in the form of the writings of Charles Fort (1875-1932). Fort was obsessed with collecting unusual stories and data, and he spent most of his life in the main libraries of New York and London collecting such data, living on a small inheritance. Fort was incensed at the attitude of scientists who tended to ignore or dismiss any fact or datum that did not fit into their preconceptions, and this was the type of data he collected and from which he attempted to draw conclusions. Fort collected his data from old books and newspapers, and the biggest fault with his books, such as Lo!, and The Book of the Damned is that he accepted all of this "data" at face value. He didn't check the reliability of the stories. Fort is remembered by most for his collections of items about odd things falling from the sky, but he also collected sightings of mysterious objects in the sky. In fact, he had a theory that we... people, that is... are property, that we are owned by some superior race of extraterrestrials.

Here is a link to The Book of the Damned

Raymond Palmer was a reader of Fort's books, and he soon began to incorporate some of Fort's ideas into his work of increasing the circulation of Amazing Stories. He encouraged the idea that aerial craft were observing Earth, and that the government knew it. This was his way of building interest in his magazine, of "hooking" the reader. That is, by planting the thought that there might be a grain of truth in the stories he published, even when they were called "fiction".

So, when Kenneth Arnold made his famous sighting of "flying saucers" in June, 1947, Palmer was quick to seize the opportunity. He published articles about Arnold's sighting in Fate, and he co-wrote Arnold's limited edition book, The Coming of the Saucers. But Palmer's stories can't be credited with "causing" Arnold's sighting. Arnold didn't even read Amazing Stories. Neither can Palmer be credited with the extra-terrestrial hypothesis for the origin of UFOs, since he borrowed the idea from Fort. Palmer would be the second major player in the Maury Island hoax...

BOOK REVIEW: Alex by Dianne Hartsock

Alex is a Paranormal Suspense Fiction.

Alex Elson is a twenty year old orphan, his mother died in a house fire after she fell asleep with a cigarette in her hand.  Alex didn't have a happy home life, he was extremely abused both mentally and physically; his body is rife with the scarred tissue to proof it.  Alex's mother loved to do sadistic things to her young son, from burning him with irons, cigarettes to beating him beyond recognition at times.  His only escape is the day his mother dies.

On that fateful day he is removed from his burned out house where he was tied up in the basement and finds renewed life with Jane and her father.  They help to nurture him and bring Alex out of his shell, and if it weren't for the severe migraines and the horrific visions he sees, life might appear to be idyllic.

Jane is a 27 year old artist and is in love with Alex, she has been since the first day she seen him smile.  She would do anything for Alex and helps him to lead his life as normal as possible.

Alex is seeing things, sometimes they are premonitions of things to come and sometimes they are events that have passed but the things he sees and hears frightens him.  He doesn't understand why the voices of the terrified people continue to harass him but whenever the feelings get strong, Alex has no control as he is lead to wherever his visions take him.

Alex saves a little boy from drowning and puts his life and those of his loved ones in danger as the boy's parents try to take revenge on him.  They kidnap Alex and begin to torture him but Alex escapes and the man hunt begins for the Jack and Pat Gibson.

Alex has many visions and some lives he saves, others he fails; he is suspected by the police of knowing more than  he is letting on and the pressure is building to find the Gibson's and put an end to this madness.

I thought this was a gripping read, you couldn't help but want to finish the story and find out the outcome.  I thought Alex's back story was written in a haunting nature that left your skin crawling with revulsion.  The atrocities that Alex had to go through as a child makes ones heart cringe and ache.

I enjoyed how the primary characters interacted with each other and gave Alex a softer more humane side.  Alex's visions and the auras he sees are not easy for some to comprehend, however, his friends support him in all he does and help him to uncover the truth.

The abusive scenes are written with clarity, the reader is under no delusions as to what is occurring to Alex at the hands of his mother.  The torture and torment that Alex fights with everyday in order to lead a normal life doesn't always come easy and it is shared in a balanced nature, giving the reader insight into Alex's character and background.

I was really getting into the story but about three quarters of the way through the book I started to feel rushed and characters were being attached to events that had occurred and it didn't always play well.  There were a few questions not properly disclosed, like the explanation for why the Gibson's did what they did, the reader read the outcome in a flippant, almost off-handed manner and I thought that it left the outcome lacking.

I would give Alex a three and a half stars out of five.  I thought the writing was excellent but the outcome of the story was a disappointment, it failed to answer some important issues for me and the love story between Alex and Jane wasn't impressive.  She was several years older than he and for almost a decade, thought of themselves as adoptive siblings.   I see this scared, scarred and withdrawn twelve year comes into Jane's house and she feels like he is her soul mate when she has already graduated college and is about to begin her career, it just didn't play well with me.  Which brings me to Dr. Beckett, I am unsure his role in the novel, other than to help the antagonists perpuate their plans but I feel this could been delivered in a better way.

Now, do not get me wrong, this was a great read and I would recommend it to anyone who likes paranormal thrillers.  The abuse scenes are well delivered, Alex is a likeable character and the book does keep you reading until the end.  I would definitely read more by Dianne Hartsock.

SYNOPSIS:

Her skin was soft under his fingertips. Her bare shoulders, the curve of muscle in her arms, her slim fingers; all so soft. Her breath caressed his cheek as he stared at her lips. He wanted to kiss her. It was a risk, he knew, but he ached for someone to break the loneliness. He bent his head and ran his tongue tentatively over the sweet fullness of her mouth. Her tongue met his but he was unprepared for the fire that tore through him. She pressed against him to deepen the kiss and a wild madness surged through his blood.
Something was wrong. She cried out as she struggled in his arms. Her nails raked across his neck. He let her go and watched in bewilderment as she scrambled away, her breath coming in sharp gasps. He reached out a tentative hand, wanting to explain—apologize, but she stepped hastily away from him.
“Freak!” she spat and quickly fled.
He jerked as the word struck him, his arm dropping to his side. The pain of her rejection flooded him. He touched his mouth and wondered desperately what she’d seen as he’d kissed her.
She stopped at the end of the bridge and looked over her shoulder. He couldn’t make out her expression, but he hoped to God it wasn’t pity. He took a hesitant step toward her but she tore her eyes away and rushed off.
He watched her follow the road back to town, hurrying as the sun sank. The far side of the road was already lost in darkness. His shoulders slumped in defeat when she disappeared into the gloom.
Dejected, he sat on the edge of the bridge and dangled his feet over the swift current. The sound of the rushing water echoed under him, filling his ears. It dulled the edge of his pain, making him forget his humiliation as he listened. He could almost make out a voice in the resonance.

Echo Falls by Jaime McDougall

Echo Falls is a Paranormal Romance.

Phoebe Martin has just moved to Echo Falls; running from a past she doesn't wish to embrace.  Upon her arrival, she is attacked by a huge dog and she would have been ripped to shreds if it wasn't for the heroic attributes of Aidan O'Bryan.  In an off-hand, flippant manner, she brushes away the attack and Aidan's help.

Aidan, a police officer and an Alpha-male werewolf, has his own secret agenda for keeping the streets of Echo Falls safe.  When a serial killer begins to kill people in town, Aidan and his task force are set to remove the Hunter from their midst.  Someone is killing off their kind and Aidan is determined to find out who it is before too many more are killed.

Phoebe is attracted to Aidan and wishes to keep him at a distance.  There are things about Phoebe that Aidan could never find out and she tries to discourage their friendship but to no avail, Aidan has sworn to protect Phoebe at all costs.

The Hunter is tracking someone in Echo Falls and the psychological mind games he plays with his victim makes it hard for them to trust anyone and everyone is guilty of subterfuge.  Who can Phoebe trust, she has been running for so long and she finally felt like Echo Falls may be the future she is looking for.  However, someone is killing her friends and she feels that only she can stop the madness.

I loved this book and thought it was an excellent paranormal romance.  I loved the descriptions of the characters and enjoyed their back stories and thought they fit the story nicely.  I liked the attraction of Phoebe and Aidan and enjoyed watching their relationship grow.  I thought Phoebe's trust issues were believable and I loved how Aidan ingrained himself into her life.

I thought however, there was, at times, too much time in between the characters and when they should have reacted to one another.  Such as, Aidan swore to keep Phoebe safe and then doesn't come around for a few days...I understand he was giving her distance, but for the events unfolding, propriety should have been set aside for urgency.  I thought that Aidan didn't dig deep enough when he should  have.

I loved Mia and her wickedness and thought she was written perfectly to balance the characterizations of Phoebe and Elle, who befriended Phoebe from the onset of the book.  I thought that there could have been more back story between these women, as well as several of the packs other members, such as Elle's husband Will, Aidan's best friend Thomas and even The Hunter.  While I loved how the story progressed, I felt it could have been so much more with that added level of character understanding.

I would give Echo Falls a four out of five stars.  I loved the pace of the story, the draw to the plot and the romance that built upon itself instead of rushing, however, I would love to see more of the back story characters.  With a little more definition, Jaime McDougall is definitely a writer to keep on watch list, she has the right stuff and I would definitely read more of her work!

CHAPTER ONE Keep running, keep running, keep running. Phoebe’s lungs burned as her mind screamed the mantra. Keep running, keep running.
How many steps can there be?
She should know. She lived in this apartment building.
Tears ran down her cheeks and her lungs burned for air. Only the random irrational thought broke through the panic keeping her feet moving down the steps. Keep running. Keep running. The light of the emergency exit came into view. Almost there…
The door to the stairwell slammed open with a hollow boom. She tripped and clung to the railing to steady herself.
Keep running.
The shock of the cool night air sent a shiver of relief through her body. She’d come out a side exit into an alley. If she could just get to the front –
Suddenly she was thrown to the ground from behind. She hit the concrete, what little breath she had knocked from her lungs. Blood began flowing from where her head hit the ground, and small sparks of light floated into her vision.
How did he catch up so fast?
Desperately she tried to gulp down as much air as she could, willing her lungs to cooperate. Instinct kicked in as the attacker slashed at her, and she curled into fetal position.
A dog. He’d turned into a dog. A big dog with vicious claws and teeth he used to tear into her exposed back, thigh and shoulder. She slowly regained her breath but could only use it to scream her throat raw.
Her vision faded, taking the small sparks of light with it. Searing pain ripped through her shoulder as a claw dug down against her bone. One last, long scream tore from her lungs before she was left gasping and sobbing, her fear slowly smoldering into rage.
Things can’t end like this.
She opened her eyes as the dog stood over her, trying to get to her throat. A paw came into her line of vision and she saw her chance. She reached out, grabbed it and squeezed with all the strength she had.
The dog yelped and tried to twist away, but she held on with all the strength she had. She knew she’d only bought herself time. She couldn’t move the dog off her and she couldn’t squeeze his paw all night. He tried uselessly to bite her, his jaws having no strength so long as she squeezed his paw. But she could already feel her strength waning.
Suddenly the weight of the dog flew off her, taking the paw out of her grip. Without thinking, she used her one cooperating arm to drag herself toward the front of the building.
She shivered, her arm giving out, and caught a glimpse of a second dog. No. A wolf… Squeezing her eyes tightly shut, she listened to the dogs fighting, the battle just a few steps away. She tried her best to curl up against the building wall and willed the growling and snapping to go away. They sounded like they were tearing each other to pieces.
The universe granted her wish, the battle ending with the sound of two bodies hitting each other and a sharp whine. She shivered and softly whined as well, dreading the approach of the winner as one of the dogs yelped and ran away.
A few moments later warm, human hand brushed the back of her head and she screamed again. If it could be called a scream. Her throat burned and rebelled at her abuse of it.
“Ssh. You’re safe now.”
She tried to scream again and move away, but her body wouldn’t obey her commands. She groaned as the full force of the pain washed over her.
He murmured and she relaxed her desperate grip on staying conscious. Sleep seemed so tempting, the black abyss singing a siren’s song to her. Her rescuer – or captor – tried to soothe her, but something dark and dangerous in his voice betrayed him. He was different. She tried to bat away his hands but gave up after a few attempts, not sure if her good hand was actually moving.
As she slipped into the darkness, she wondered if death had merely granted her a short reprieve from the inevitable.
