DVD REVIEW: Wiener Dog Nationals (2013)~!!

Wiener Dog Nationals (2013)

Language:  English
Genre:   Comedy/Family
Production Company:  Fromage Pictures
Run Time:  82 minutes
Directed by:  Kevan Peterson
Written by: Kevan Peterson
Story by: Gregory Gutierrez and Kevan Peterson

Fact: The Wiener Dog Nationals Movie is inspired by an actual Wiener Dog race held each year by fast food company Wienerschnitzel.

A family adopts a runt of a dachshund from a shelter. Only time will tell if little "Shelly" and her new family are up for the challenges of entering the nation's greatest wiener dog race, Wienerschnitzel's "Wiener Dog Nationals." One Nation, one race, one wiener.

Cast:

Alicia Witt as Melanie
Jason London as Phil Jack
Morgan Fairchild as Ms. Merryweather
Marque Richardson as Dirk
Bryan Batt as Judge Brown
Caitlin Carmichael as Bridget
Chris Moss as Mr. Bright
Jim Metzler as Mr. Fleet
Laura Ann Kesling as Teresa
Brandon Tyler Russell as Ronny
Jessica Tyler Brown as Snotty Girl
Cheryl Texiera as Ms. Hampton
Scott Butler as Judge Brown's Assistant
Jeanne Chinn as News Reporter
Austin Anderson as Skip Jack

Plot:

Each year, hundreds of dogs participate in the Annual Wiener Nationals, an event that has been sponsored by the Wienerschnitzel Restaurant chain for almost 20 years.  When a little boy and his family adopt "Shelly", named after Shelter Dogs everywhere...they decide to run her in the races even though they do not hold much faith in her winning.

When Shelly places in the Nationals, the family scrapes and scrimps to get enough together to enter only to be thwarted along the way by Ms. Merriweather and her reigning Wiener dog champion, "Princess".

Along the way, they learn that Ms. Merriweather may not appear to be a decent sort and when the chips finally fall, Shelly becomes triumphant in her pursuit to capture the hearts of those around her.

We found that this is not suitable for children younger than six years of age, there isn't enough to grab and hold their attention for very long.  Though the puppies are adorable, there just wasn't enough action to follow through with the plot's development.

The dialogue was stale in some parts and the comedy delivered failed to meet its punchline.  Though the movie was charming, I feel that some people will have a hard time keeping their attention drawn to the movie.  If you love Wiener dogs, however, you will find this movie absolutely fascinating.

We here, at The Marsh, give "Wiener Dog Nationals" a 5 out of 10 stars~!!

BOOK REVIEW: Prophecy of the Flame by Lynn Hardy

Prophecy of the Flame:  Book One by Lynn Hardy

  • Paperback: 399 pages
  • Publisher: Brigham Distributing; 2nd edition (March 1, 2008)
  • Language: English

Synopsis:

In a blinding flash of light, five nondescript strangers are yanked from this world and thrust into a land of sorcery as they are granted the looks and abilities of the people they were playing. This band of wannabe heroes soon discovers that having the powers they have always dreamed of, does not make life a dream come true. The Crusaders of the Light struggle to form a cohesive band as they blend twentieth century technology with the supernatural powers of this new world, fighting to liberate the kingdom of Cuthburan from the evil horde threatening humanity.

Battle is also waged within Reba, an ordinary housewife who has become the most powerful mage on the planet, as she struggles to remain true to her wedding vows. Drawn against her will to the arms of Prince Alexandros, Reba must choose between a marriage to a handsome prince in a magical world or returning to the husband she left behind.

My Thoughts:

I thought the premise behind the story was a groovy one; being an avid Dungeons & Dragons player, it would be every gamer's dream to be transported to another world where their characters come to life.  I was intrigued with the story as it commenced but became somewhat disappointed as the story unfolded.

I enjoyed the character building and found each of the main characters to be represented by their own personalities.  I thought that each character wasn't believable in their new found powers however, there should have been more errors in their deductions and more fear and worry about their new surroundings, their adaption to the new world should have had more upsets than not.

I also felt we could've seen more from the opponents in the story, there wasn't enough intrigue in the reason's as to why the group was summoned, everyone is just accepting and everything appears to work out for the group every time they abuse their powers.

I found Rebecca aka Archmage Reba to be kind of annoying in her acceptance of her magical powers and her rhymes didn't make any sense for the most part nor do I know how any of the magic worked in her favour.  Magic isn't an easy ability to wield and she came into her powers far to easily and uses it for the silliest of reasons not even worrying about the consequences of her actions.  I am hoping the retribution of the magics she is throwing around comes back to haunt her in the next book of this series.

I would give Prophecy of the Flame a three and half out of five stars.  For a first time author, Lynn Hardy has the ability to draw you in, even though I found many aspects unfavourable, the book is a great read and I am quite sure many of you will find it enjoyable.  I would continue to read the series as I can only see this getting better whence all the demons are brought into play~!!

#DVD #Review ~ Decisions

Decisions

Running Time:  87 minutes
Genre:  Action, Crime, Drama
Year:  2011
Rated:  R for violence, pervasive language, some drug use and sexual content
Production Company:  Zenon Kesik Productions, Zrk1 Pictures
Budget:  $1.5 million

SYNOPSIS:

When a group of friends decide to pull a bank heist to get out from underneath their money troubles they quickly discover that things can unravel in a hurry~!!

A compromised LAPD Dectective (Corey Haim) on the take with a crime syndicate figure (Anthony Vitale) want the money back and will got to any lengths to get it~!!

Things go wrong quickly as bullets start to fly and the group finds that one thing affects another and discover the voice of reason is not always what it appears to be.

CAST & CREW:

Corey Haim ~ Det. Lou Andreas
Anthony Vitale ~ Frankie
Matt Medrano ~ Dave
Yeniffer Behrens ~ Serena
Mike Foy ~ AD
George Cantreras ~ DJ Johnny
Anthony Fitzgerald ~ Kiwi
Joseph Medrano ~ Chino
Desmond Phillips ~ Mike
Cisco Reyes ~ Halo Manchester
Senyo Amoaku ~ Smoke

My Thoughts:

The story sets off interesting enough, you are introduced who you assume are going to be the main characters and begin to build a rapport with them.  You watch the scene being set up and you begin to get the uncanny sensation that you have seen this same scene in dozens of films and truthfully, the whole premise was nothing but one huge cliché after another.

After the shooting, things begin to get confusing as the viewer isn't quite sure who are the victims and who are the "bad" guys as character building is left on the wayside in order to bring a mindless and drifting plot that doesn't really capture the viewers imagination nor their attention.

I thought Corey Haim was over~rated in his role of Det. Lou Andreas, his portrayal of a "on~the~take" detective was not only trite in his depiction, but grossly over~acted in almost every scene.  "Decisions" is being classified as Haim's "last movie" that he shall be appearing in and after the likes of his performance in this movie, I cannot say as I am going to miss him much.

I thought the musical score was improperly tuned to the film as at times the quality was lacking and the volume had to be turned up and down with there being no happy flow to the listening levels.  I thought the music was fitting for the movie and set the tone nicely however and was one of the few aspects of the movie that was enjoyable.

I thought the dialogue was lacking in some areas and almost seemed ad libbed in others.  Often times it was hard to follow as there was no clear and concise measure to the characters words.  Most of the time it was a lot of incessant shouting matches between testosterone humped up men who are looking for an "easy" way out of their life situations.

I would give Decisions a two out of five stars.  I just didn't find this movie appealing, though it did have some moments of brief clarity, for the most part, the director needs to hire themselves a better writer if they wish to continue working in the movie industry.  There were some nice cinemagraphics but not enough to keep the movie interesting.

#HASBRO ~ The Amazing Spider~Man Hero Mask

ARV ~ $9.99

The Amazing Spider~Man Hero Mask

Feel just like your web~slinging hero with this awesome SPIDER~MAN Hero Mask~!!

It conceals your true identity as you imagine web~crawling adventures and battles against the forces of darkness.

Evil doesn't stand a chance when you're in your Hero Mask~!!

Mask adjusts to fit most head sizes for ages 5 through adult.

Odin McBam~Bam using his Spidey senses~!!

Playing with my inner child...lol

Li'l Miss Peaches'n'Cream knows how to battle evil~!!

Ms. Alarm flashing her Spidey Moves~!!

Ms. Not~Quite~Right showing her Spidey hand actions...

As you can see...the kids and I had a blast wearing the Spider~Man Hero Mask and tearing up the neighborhood with our antics~!!

The only drawback to the mask is keeping your hair from falling into the eye sections of the mask.  As you can see, we all have long hair and all but Ms. Alarm (who was fortunate to have had her hair in a ponytail) had the hair in their eyes.  So for safety reasons, if your child's hair is long, keep it tied back while they are playing, especially if its unsupervised.

Really and truly, I can see these being a GREAT mask to have for Hallowe'en...your child is able to see out of the eye holes perfectly, giving them a nice, wide area in which to view out of.  The mask sits very comfortably on your head, though the bridge inside the mask may hinder some younger folks as it can feel a bit claustrophobic.  The velcro straps are secure and the mask does not slide around on your head when moving.

Hasbro's The Amazing Spider~Man Hero Mask would make the PERFECT accessory to your child's crime fighting needs...putting it on gives your imagination a chance to play and you can't help but busting out all your best Spidey moves~!!

BOOK REVIEW: The Sigh by Marjane Satrapi

The Sigh by Marjane Satrapi

Hardcover:  56 pages
Publisher:  Archaia Entertainment (December 13, 2011)
Language:  English
Reading Level:  8 and up

SYNOPSIS:

Rose is one of three daughters of a rich merchant who always brings gifts for his girls from the market. One day Rose asks for the seed of a blue bean, but he fails to find one for her. She lets out a sigh in resignation, and her sigh attracts the Sigh, a mysterious being that brings the seed she desired to the merchant. But every debt has to be paid, and every gift has a price, and the Sigh returns a year later to take the merchant’s daughter to a secret and distant palace.

My Thoughts:

The Sigh is about a merchant and his three daughters and before each journey he asks them for whatever their hearts desires.  Only this time  he is unable to satisfy Rose, his youngest daughter's wish and she attracts "Ah, the Sigh".  He tells her father that he will give him the seed of a blue bean and one day he will return to ask for a favour.  The father agrees and everyone is happy until exactly one year later...

The father must now accept the terms of agreement and with deep regrets he allows Rose to leave with Ah and step into whatever fate decrees for them all.

Along the journey Rose encounters many lessons in life and from each she learns something new and takes it with her to her next moment.

I loved the richness of the book, the illustrations were done in a cartoony~ish way that will delight young readers and the cover is just gorgeous.  The book is quite charming to read and the morals and tenets that the reader peruses as you follow Rose on her journey into humanity are lessons that many people should incorporate into their lives.

I was impressed with the direction that the story took and was pleased with the outcome and I feel that young readers would truly enjoy reading the story of Rose and her sigh.

I would give The Sigh a three and half stars out of five.

#HASBRO ~ The Amazing Spider~Man Web Battlers Action Figures~!!

ARV ~ $9.99
The Amazing Web Battlers Assortment

This is the amazing web~crawling hero and hi sarch nemesis, The LIZARD, like you've never seen them~!!

These Web Battlers Action Figures look just like the characters from "THE AMAZING SPIDER~MAN" movie, but each has a surprise that his enemies won't be ready for~!!

When you squeeze his legs, he unleashes a furious attack.

Amp up your adventures with these Web Battlers Action Figures.

Each sold separately.

My son just adored his Amazing Spider~Man Web Battler as did many of his friends who are in awe of how wonderful the action figure character is.

The colours and definition are quite remarkable on such a toy and my son loves how nicely he fits in his hand.  My son has beefy hands and some of the smaller action figures discourage him, however, this Web Blaster was the exact size and fit he needed in order to play with his imagination properly.

He found it very easy to squeeze the legs together and after giving it a try I realized that it truly doesn't take much effort to squeeze the legs in order to activate the spin web feature that is attached to Spider~Man's hand.  This would be a very good toy for younger folks who are just beginning their coordination skills as it not only gives them a sense of accomplishment but it strengthens their hand muscles at the same time.

If you have a Spider~Man fan in your family, then this is one action figure that is sure to be a HUGE hit~!!

BOOK REVIEW: The Shadows of Arthur's Kingdom by Donald D. Kennedy III and Alice C. Kennedy

The Shadows of Arthur's Kingdom by Donald D. Kennedy III & Alice C. Kennedy

Paperback:  208 pages
Publisher:  CreateSpace (September 28, 2011)
Language:  English

Synopsis:

This is an epic fantasy novel about a wanna~be Royal Knight of King Arthur's famed Round Table, fire~breathing dragons, a dangerous quest, battles, castles, and a self~willed, curious Princess.

The plot is captivating and compelling.  Readers young and old can enjoy this read~!!  This epic King Arthur fantasy novel is sure to bring out the kid in all of us~!!  Originally conceived for ages 9~13, readers young and old are enjoying this epic tale of adventure and bravery.

My thoughts:

I thought this was an interesting book in the fact that it was originally written by a twelve year old and polished up by his mother.  I enjoyed the idea of a mother/son combination team working together to accomplish such a feat.

I found the characters were likeable however, I found they lacked any real depth to their definition.  I found the story's plot flowed rather quickly leaving out details that would've enhanced the flavour of the novel in a much more grandeur way.

Sardius is the main character, along with his lion consort and weapons trainer, Judah.  Sardius has always dreamed of becoming a Knight of the Round Table, but no one from his village lacked any definite bravado and most lived their lives simply.

When Delugio, an evil mage and his feared dragon, Feng Ferion arrive, the people of the kingdom are frightened and prepare for their defense.  However, Princess Gabriella was a curious girl and wished to see a dragon up close and becomes kidnapped.  Now all in the land go off in search of the lost Princess until one by one, they all fail.

The book is in a large~print style so that even readers who are beginning their journey into imagination can enjoy.

I thought the plot was enjoyable but lacked depth and description and I would've liked to have been able to get inside the heads of the characters a little more in order to feel for their quest.  However, I am speaking from an adult's point of view and I am quite certain many young readers are going to thoroughly enjoy this read.

I would give The Shadows of Arthur's Kingdom a three out of five stars.

BOOK REVIEW: Reasonable Facsimile by Chris Shella

Reasonable Facsimilie by Chris Shella

Paperback:  186 pages
Publisher:  Digisoda Publishing (December 1, 2011)
Language:  English

Synopsis:

Can Jasper Davis pull himself from his life of loose women, liquor and general debauchery in enough time to win a murder case and possibly save his own hide?

Jasper Davis is a criminal trial lawyer in Baltimore who has slowly but surely become like the drug dealers and lowlifes he represents.  He spends more time with hookers than clients and more time drinking Jack Daniels than studying the lawbooks.  Simply put...he is a shade of his former self.

Jasper finds himself in the middle of a first degree murder trial when he becomes the suspect in the murder of a DEA agent who has set to testify against his client.  Jasper is so far gone on women and liquor he sees his trial skills deteriorate right before his eyes.  Jasper is confronted by the situation is he gonna continue to be a reasonable facsimile of a human being or is he gonna become the man he once was?

My Thoughts:

While I was impressed with the title of the book and how the other explains it via the main character, Jasper Davis a.k.a. JD.  I thought it was a nice way to set the tone for the book's plot and how the character interacts with his surroundings and was looking forward to an enjoyable read.

However, I was wrong.

I couldn't find myself caring for JD, I thought he was a cliché and a stereotype and I found it truly hard to get past the lack of any depth to the character.  I found his introduction of women, by their breast size and skin colour and sometimes even their "booty" size was quite frustrating and removed me from the story.  I thought one or two examples of such would've sufficed but every single time a women is briefly in a paragraph??  And no, I did not find that it set the character up with this kind of drivel, I found it removed from the character of JD, instead of enhancing him.

I thought that the antagonist or the criminal, Billy Badass, that JD was representing wasn't overly believable in the explanation and found the whole trial to be without emotion and found myself seeing the trial as a prop to undergo the "transformation" of JD.

I found the vulgarity of the story to be repetitive and didn't carry well with the overall story as there was too much of it, drawing away from the literary aspect that the story had the potential to become.

I would give Reasonable Facsimile a two and an half stars out of five.

HASBRO ~ Spider~Man Spider Strike Battle Racer

ARV ~ $24.99
The Amazing Spider~Man Spider Strike Battle Racer

Buckle up, because your Spider~Man adventures will never be the same once you've got the Spider Strike Battle Racer.  Your Spider~Man figure rides in the seat and when he needs more than webs to chase down evil and stop it.  When his enemies least expect it, push down the vehicle's spoiler and launch the retractable web claw.

Use your Spidey sense to stop criminals in their tracks with a sneak attack from the Spider Strike Battle Racer.  Shoot Spidey out to capture crooks and he swings into action.

Includes a poseable 4" Spider~Man action figure
Swinging web claw
Push spoiler to unleash claw
Wheeled vehicle (3"x5"x9")
Plastic
Ages 4+

My son just loves the Spider Strike Battle Racer and didn't have any troubles putting the car together.  He did need some initial help in attaching Spider~Man to the bar so that he could do his acrobatic flips and turns, but after he saw me do it a couple of times, he quickly picked up the concept and played with the vehicle for hours.

He has a few cars that he plays with and this one has quickly been added to his line of bigger cars.  He loves how Spider~Man flips out of the car when he activates the lever on the spoiler at the back.

I love the durability of the car and how the action figure can be removed and you can use it in other imaginative plays.  The colours are vibrant and the small pieces are few.  You will have to attach the spoiler to the car after some uses and sometimes Spidey doesn't always flip off but other than that, there are no true issues with the Battle Racer.

I love how the Hasbro line of toys are all easily affordable, being a frugal mom of six children, you can understand the need to find toys that are within my price range and stand up to the rigors of my children's imaginations.  I would recommend this to anyone of you who have a Spider~Man lover on their list, they will be using their imaginations and battling bad guys before you can get it out of the box.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Cottonelle ~ Jonathan Adler Toilet Paper Roll Covers

Toilet paper is one of our greatest inventions, created over 100 years ago, it has truly changed our hygiene and health practices.  How many of you have just tossed your toilet paper into a cabinet or shoved it into a closet?  The bath tissue that has been servicing your bum has been "downright disrespected", that is, until now~!!

Cottonelle has tapped the creative genius of world~renowned designer, Jonathan Adler, who is known for his "cheeky and energetic designs in home décor".  This new line of roll covers are a perfect way for you to organize and affordably add a touch of creative designer flair to your bathrooms.

Adler has been putting a fresh and modern spin on every day objects for a long time and has created the paper roll covers to give people a stylish, new way to store extra rolls of toilet paper.
Made of hard, durable plastic they can easily store a roll of Cottonelle toilet paper inside.  The top just pulls off easily when a new roll is needed and even children could open the top of the canister.

The designs are colourful, vibrant and eye~catching and look great sitting on a shelf or back of the toilet.  Guests, who are unsure of the canisters are not aware that there is toilet paper inside and you do have to explain to them what they are looking for...yes, sometimes that happens.

They also make great boxes to hold bathroom accessories in, such as hair clips and pony tail holders, razors, makeup, tub toys etc., they truly have more than one use and my daughter wants one to store all her small accessories for her toys...and I think that is also a great idea~!!  Truly, the uses of the Jonathan Adler designed Cottonelle Toilet Paper Holders are quite useful and truly spark up the room they are sitting in.

PRODUCT REVIEW: ToiletTree Products ~ The Toiletry Bag

ARV ~ $25.00
ToiletTree Products first began with a simple holiday gift from Mom.  After receiving a fogless mirror set as a Christmas present in 2008, the innovative brain behind the company made it his mission to redesign the mirror so that it stood up to the heated pressures usually found in showers.  He wanted to create a mirror that was fog~free and had an unshakable wall adherence.  Steven, who was fed up with uneven shaves and just loved shaving in the shower, joined up with his father and brother to create the perfect shower mirror.

After many months of brainstorming and testing different prototypes, the three finally found a design worth manufacturing and in January, 2010, the ToiletTree Products were born.

Today, ToiletTree have not only outsold their own dreams on the Fogless Shower Mirror, but they have since developed a Deluxe LED Mirror, an On~The~Go Mirror as well as nail clippers, face cleansers, oral irrigators and a beautiful collection of Bamboo bathroom acessories.

ToiletTree Products is a family run company who take great pride in providing their customers with unique and innovative products of only the highest quality!

Now make travel even EASIER with this toiletry bag that is designed to organize all of your toiletries in one place while traveling.  This heavy duty bag has a large double zipper compartment for easy access, as well as a separate compartment on the bottom of the bag for storing.

The bag can also be used to hold makeup or medicine.  It is totally water resistant, easy to clean due to its nylon fabric interior and the exterior features reinforced double stitching with piping trim that is also easy to clean.

This is a really groovy toiletry bag~!!  It is very durable, looks great and there is more than enough room to carry everything I could ever need to travel with.  I love how everything is beautifully labelled and the collapsible cup is a wonderful idea and addition to a toiletry bag.

I cannot say how much I dig the room that this bag gives you, you can fit a can of shaving lotion or hairspray and still have tons more room to add anything else you may wish.  I am impressed with quality and would recommend this to anyone who travels a lot and is looking for a bag that will encompass all of your needs, especially if your the type that finds it hard to travel light.

You could easily use this as a carry~on bag if your travelling by air or how about a gift for a mother~to~be as her hospital travel bag, you can even fit a book or some magazines in there for your bathroom reading material...;)

If this sounds like something you could dig your teeth into, then the Cruella De Vil adult costume from WholeSale Costume Club is the pick for you this year~!!

I had my oldest daughter try this on and showcase her Cruella nastiness...lol  I must say she handled the part quite well as she rocked her dramatic evil~ish self while strutting her stuff in true Cruella De Vil style~!!

One of my daughter's favourite movies from when she was a wee lassie was Disney's "101 Dalmations"~!!  She wore several copies of the movie out over the years, dreamt as a child of owning her own dalmation puppy and has been fascinated with it ever since.  Now, when she heard I had the opportunity to review for WholeSale Costume Club again, she begged me to choose the Cruella costume as she had been looking for YEARS and was unable to successfully find one...so out of my motherly love, I complied...even though I REALLY liked the Ladies Pirate Costumes...lol

I must say though, she did me proud in the wearing...

I truly thought this costume was everything it claimed to be and more...she did truly look wonderful and these pics do the overall effect no justice~!!  We had no complaints but one, she felt the dress was a tad see through and to remember to dress accordingly...lol  We both agree, however, that at Hallowe'en and your clubbing it, then it's all gooood~!!  ;)

Adding some fish net stockings and stiletto's would really pump this costume up and maybe a dalmation puppy or two...haha

I have had the delight and the enjoyment of reviewing for this company on a few occasions and I have, AS OF YET, been disappointed with anything I have ever reviewed for them.  The customer service is EXCELLENT, they are courteous and knowledgeable in all that they are able to help you with.  I would recommend them for any time you need a costume to spruce up an event~!!
