Banishing the Bullies

Whether the bully in question is a school teacher, a boss, a friend or even a member of the family, if you are on the receiving end it really can make your life a misery.

The constant and relentless barrage of verbal or physical abuse, can wear a person down so much, they can’t even see a way out.

There is no need to live in fear of a bully, and there are many different kinds of initiatives being developed for every type of bullying out there. If you are, or someone you know is being harassed, I give you some examples of how to deal with it...

Praise them
Secondary schools in Scotland are taking a new look at what motivates bullies to behave the way they do.

They have bought in a system of secondary school rewards and praise methods, recognising good behaviour formally and publicly, so everyone knows about it.

Reward systems are not new as such, and you might be wondering what this has to do with bullying.

Well, research shows that bullies typically have very low self esteem and by teachers paying close attention to the good work and good things that the bullies do, they can be publicly rewarded for these acts and then their confidence in themselves will grow.

This results in a happy ex-bully and of course a great relief to the victims.

For it to be successful, all the teachers must be singing from the same hymn sheet, as it were. So, time spent setting up the system and explaining its function is essential. It will be regularly monitored to ensure consistency is maintained.

Essentially, the praise must be genuine in order for it to ring true with the teenagers, and in a school culture which might say that to be a “swot” or teacher’s pet is bad, and that to be cool and macho is the done thing, you need the praise to ignite some pride in them – not have it knocked back.

Face facts
Bullying in the workplace is unacceptable. No-one wants to have to face their oppressor every day, especially when it starts affecting their work standard and may result in loss of job.

Often, the put downs and intimidation is done in front of other work colleagues, therefore turning them against the victim.

It can take many forms, such as racial or sexual harassment, but can also be covert, such as being constantly harangued, blamed for other peoples mistakes, given so much work that it cannot possibly be completed, thus setting you up to fail, or physically and/or verbally abused.
Maybe these can happen on email or fax, as well as face to face.

Luckily, there are laws in place to cover discrimination and harassment in the workplace. If you feel that you, or someone you know, are suffering in this way, then first of all get advice.
This may be from a Union representative, a Human Resources member, or a manager or supervisor. (Of course, things can get difficult if it’s the manager or supervisor who is bullying you, but if necessary go above them within the company).

Your employer has a “duty of care” when your at work, and safety from bullying comes under that umbrella.

It is advised that the victim speaks to the bully, to make it clear how their behaviour makes them feel. Maybe the bully is really not aware of how bad their behaviour is. Ask them to not do it. If it continues, you will have a case. Keep all incidents written down in a dairy, with dates and details.

Then, if you wish to raise a formal complaint, you will be well armed. Ask for the company’s grievance procedure and follow it to a tee.

Have you ever been a victim of bullying? Perhaps you were the bully and wish to explain your motives. Please share here.

Christian Rehab ~ A Faith Based Choice to Freedom~!!

Today many people are looking to rid themselves of their personal "demons" and often, Christian Rehab centers offer a solution that not only heals the body, but also works on healing the mind and the spirit also.

Many people who are seeking, find themselves frustrated with life and turn to other venues in order to compensate for their lack of faith.  A point in one's life is reached where the addictions are more of a burden than the burdens themselves and many turn to rehabilitation centers in order to find the correct path in which to travel.

Regardless of one's faith, it is important to note that recovery works best when individuals work on their body, mind and spirit collectively.  Choosing a Christian Rehab program that works for each person is the next step in the correct direction.

There are basically three types of faith based recovery programs:

1.  100% Christian based programs that have little medical therapies such as clinical counselling or credentialed staff, they are essentially, centers run by recovering Christians.

2.  A "work~based" drug and/or alcohol programs are generally free to the individual provided you are willing to work 8 ~ 12 hours per day to offset any costs you may incur as well, daily prayer and scripture are normally used.

3.  Combines all different types of treatments, including both Christian and standard approaches.  Generally its regarded as the more successful approaches but is hindered by cost as usually on insurance coverage applies when seeking this type of assistance.

People are are completely in tune with their spiritual growth begin to recognize the value of that growth as they connect with others, leaving their addictions behind.  Returning to one's life can be just as addicting and with Christian Rehab centers, these tenets and morals are highlighted through scripture and inspirational attitudes.

When your spirituality is awakened, it is believes your body's craving of substance abuse subsides, replacing negative with the positive, and bringing a joy for life through God's grace and forgiveness.  Many people have walked the darker path, my own sister included, and has come out shining on the other side.  Though it can be a long, hard road to travel, being focused on the positive will in turn, bring positive to each individual the more the effort is issued.  Never give up and never surrender to those addictions that make you less of a worth than you truly are~!!

If you require help for your addictions, the first step is always to admitting to having a problem, there are many programs in each community, intended to set you on the correct path to truth.  Continue walking the path brothers and sisters and you will find where you are needing to go.

PRODUCT REVIEW: OXY's Emergency Acne Vanishing Spot Gel

OXY Emergency Acne Vanishing Spot Gel goes on clear to treat pimples.

This formula combines the acne fighting ingredient Salicylic Acid along with the anit~oxidant Phytic Acid Extreme Complex (a natural rice derivative) to clear acne and improve the texture of skin while containing moisturizing aloe to soothe redness and irritated skin.

It is the first acne spot treatment to include Dragon's Blood, which is a traditional antiseptic used to speed healing.

Use OXY Spot Gel for treatment of breakouts on the spot.  Re~apply small dabs to affected areas if breakout persists or as directed by a healthcare practitioner.

This is compact sized and easy to take with you wherever you go.  It is a small, hard, plastic bottle with a pump action top that pushes the gel out of the bottle.  The gel is very thick, almost like a hair or aloe vera gel.  It comes out in a milky white colour but dries clear and smells kind of manly, like a light scented after shave lotion.

Truly, you should work will all of the OXY products in order to have the best results.  A working hygienic regime will work wonders on your skin if you remain digilient with the products that work best for your skin type.

When you squirt the gel, use a very small amount, you do not need a lot and dab it onto your blemish, you do not have to massage it in and then just leave it to dry.  When it dries, it tends to pull at my skin, sometimes your able to peel it off and other times you will need to wet a cloth and wipe it.

I sometimes get break outs around my eyes and I could feel the spot gel working on my skin, kind of cool burn sensation and being rather close to my eyes, the vapours will make them water for a bit.  My views on this are neutral and believe this is one of those products that either works for you or does not.  My son has acne issues and enjoys using this when he has a stubborn pimple that needs to have the pain and inflammation removed.  He is a regular user of the OXY products and feels that they are work wonders for him.

PRODUCT REVIEW: OXY Triple Action Daily Facial Cleanser

OXY's anti~acne Triple Action Daily Facial Cleanser formula is now improved, working in 3 ways to give you clear skin.  This unique cleanser is now paraben and preservative free.

Clean ~ It penetrates deep into pores to remove dirt, oil and dead skin.

Treat ~ Unclogs pores letting oxygen in to help skin breathe and tackle breakouts.

Prevent ~ Works continuously to keep skin clear of new breakouts.

Now containing moisturizing Gree Tea and Chamomile Extracts with Pro~Vitamin B5 in a cooling non~irritating formula leaving skin feeling fresh, smooth and healthy looking.

Remember to clean pillowcases, washcloths and towels often in order to avoid cross~contamination.

Medicinal Ingredients ~ Slicyclic Acid

Cleanse with OXY's Triple Action Daily Facial Cleanser every day and evening to prevent acne and maintain clear skin.  Cleansing daily will help prevent clogged pores, which can lead to breakouts.  If you experience excessive breakouts or more problematic areas, follow up your routine with an OXY Medicated Acne Pad.

This is definitely needed if your using the whole line~up, it works great in conjunction with the Acne Pads and pH UP that my son is currently using.  This is also part of his hygeinic regime as he faithfully uses the products as they are required.

He absolutely swears by the OXY lineup and would truly recommend them to anyone who asks.  I know he has had several incidents where his acne has caused him embarrassment or concern and with the OXY products, he feels he has some control over his acne issues.

He believes it does lift the dirt and oils from his clogged up pores and is truly impressed with how fast the product seems to work.  His swelling and redness has abated considerably as it is quite noticeable now that the cleansing he is doing is actually working as it should be.  I found it to be heavily scented for men, I'm not a huge fan of scents, but my son enjoyed the after aroma that lingered on his skin afterwards.

PRODUCT REVIEW: OXY Triple Action Medicated Acne Pads

The OXY Clear Skin Solution is a unique combination of medicated acne products formulated for your skin type.  This daily skin care routine is specific to how often and severe your breakouts can be, allowing you to effectively take control of your acne.

Before acne can appear, it needs a suitable environment to grow.  Oily skin and pores clogged with dirt and dead skin creates a perfect atmosphere for acne bacteria to develop.  OXY helps control oil and oxygenates your pores, keeping them open ~ allowing your skin to breathe.  This makes it difficult for acne to grow, preventing blemishes from developing.

OXY Cleansers are ideal for acne prevention.  When used twice a day, cleansers help remove dirt, sweat and excess oil to prevent clogged pores.  Remember to use warm water and cover your entire face.

Before a full sized pimple appears, acne bacteria starts to grow and multiply inside clogged pores making skin red and swollen.  OXY's medicated formulas attack the acne bacteria underneath the skin before it can erupt into a full pimple, blackhead, whitehead or cyst.  OXY penetrates deep to the very root of the acne and stops acne from growing, keeping your skin looking smooth, even and balanced.

OXY Pads work instantly to unclog pores letting oxygen in to help skin breathe and stop the growth of acne within the pore.  Its patented encapsulated technology allows the medication to stay on the skin and in the pores, working continuously throughout the day to prevent future growth.  After washing your face, apply over the problem areas ~ do NOT rinse.  Continue to used the Medicated Acne Pads daily over breakout areas to get clear skin.

My son swears by the OXY Triple Action Medicated Acne Pads~!!  He has an terrible acne problem on his face and chest and his biggest gripe is finding a product that worked successfully.  Sometimes his acne is very swollen and painful to touch and he likes how this pain is alleviated for him in a considerable manner.  He can actually see the redness abating with each use and his smile widens as his acne is now becoming something in which he can control.

Being a fifteen year old in today's vain~ish world, it is important to his well~being that his skin appears clean and clear.  I like that he is smiling more and feels more confident about himself because his acne is diminishing and he feels like he is winning the battle.

I would recommend these to anyone with a acne problem, looking to relieve the pain often caused by the swollen puscles.  The smell isn't overly strong nor does the scent stay on your skin after you wash your face with them, it is HIGHLY recommended that you leave the stuff on your face and not to remove it, so I feel it's important to not have a disgusting scent lingering underneath your nostrils after each use.

I will be reviewing a few more exciting products from the fine folks at OXY, so stay tuned and perhaps something will be the answer in which you seek.

10 Awesome Games to Be Released in June 2012

With how big the gaming industry has become, it’s important to stay on top of your game release news. Of course, if you’re paying attention in 2012, that can still be an insurmountable challenge. There are so many successful and anticipated franchises out there now that it can be easy to get lost in all the game release madness. So let’s narrow our focus down to a single month: June 2012. Next month’s game releases might prove to be seminal and year-defining, even if you’re waiting for fall for some of the bigger names (like Assassin’s Creed III) to be released. Here’s ten reasons why.

1. Madagascar 3
The Video Game. Okay, maybe this isn’t exactly the genre-defying release you’re hoping for, but it might be exactly the release your son or daughter is looking for, especially if they’re already a fan of the film franchise.

2. Pikmin 2
The original Pikmin having been something of a popular cult hit, we say it’ about time th second entry in the franchise made its mark. It will have the opportunity to do so this June on the Nintendo Wii, and if you aren’t excited about the new Pikmin video game platform, then we don’t know what to tell you.

3. Lollipop Chainsaw
No, it’s not a franchise, so there’s no number after the title – yet. That’s because Lollipop Chainsaw is an original in the zombie genre, and the cheerleader main character might just have some staying power – that is, if fans are willing to give her a chance.

4. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
What else can you hope for from a Tom Clancy game than another edition of the Ghost Recon series? It’s everything that’s right about the genre, especially if you’re already a fan of the franchise.

5. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
If you’re like us, then you’ve been waiting for the inevitable Batman/Lego collaboration repeat for years. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but it’s hard to ignore the combination.

6. Sid Meier’s Civilization VGods and Kings
We like to follow anything Civilization-related, even if it sometimes just means updates to the main titles. But there should be some interesting things to explore in this Civ V expansion.

7. Spec Ops: The Line
You can’t deny the innovation of the Spec Ops formula, actually being a third-person shooter that accomplishes a lot that a first-person shooter. It will be interesting to see this release.

8. The Amazing Spider-Man
A release for the Nintendo DS coinciding with the release of the movie, there are a lot of kids out here who can’t wait to get their hands on this.

9. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2
Admittedly, you have to really like shooters to like this game. But if you do, then you’re likely excited about this entry to the genre.

10. Combat Wings: The Great Battles of WWII
History buffs, get ready: it’s tough to ignore this title.

BOOK REVIEW: Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fischer

Zombies Don't Cry:  A Living Dead Story ~ Book One

Author:  Rusty Fischer
Reading Level:  Ages 12 & Up
Paperback:  300 pages
Publisher:  Medallion Press (May 1, 2011)

In the sleepy town of Barracuda Bay, Maddy Swift leads the life of a fairly typical teenager, but while attending a party one night, Maddy is struck by lightning and awakens to realize she has been reanimated and turned into a zombie.

While becoming acquainted with her new "lifestyle", Maddy stumbles upon two unexpected undead chaperones, fellow students, Dane and Chloe, who begin to teach her the ways of zombie life, including defending the populace from Zerkers~the bad zombies.

Together, on Prom Night, the three teens must ultimately defend Barracuda Bay High from an all~out zombie Armageddon.

I love the writing style of author, Rusty Fischer, it is easy to read, often times comical and his main characters are heart~warming to follow.

I loved Maddy and her awakening into the zombie world, where she is unsure of her next move but glad to have her Zombie Guide in case she screws it all up.  I love her honesty and her approach to zombies, from renting B~grade zombie movies to just winging it as she goes along, it was enjoyable to this reader.

I loved that zombies have been given personalities and a can fall in love, get angry, worry...they just cannot cry.  I love the different classes between the zombies, with zombies now being those who have died by a certain circumstance and have found themselves reanimated versus those who have been bitten, such as, zerkers.  It often makes for a comical outlook with some gore thrown in for good measure.

I love zombies and would read anything on them and Zombies Don't Cry is worthy of four out of five stars for its genre.  I was quite impressed with the story, the characters and the new classifications of zombies that Fischer has incorporated.

I'm still out on the whole Guardian/Sentinel aspect of things.  I wish Fischer had given a bit more back story into these two entities as it was their involvement that left the most holes for me.  However, I'd love to read more by Rusty Fischer, he makes zombies good~!!

BOOK REVIEW: Shattered by Melody Carlson

Shattered by Melody Carlson

Paperback: 208 pages
  • Publisher: NavPress (April 15 2011)
  • Language: English

Cleo Neilson is the only one who knows why her mother was in a seedy part of town that one night, but she's determined to keep the secret that's breaking her heart.

Walk through this teen fiction novel of grief, guilt, faith, and forgiveness.

You won't forget the journey.

Cleo's best friend, Lola, is moving away and Cleo wants to spend their last weekend together at a Christian rock concert being held in the city.  However, both of Cleo's parents are busy and cannot drive them and Cleo's mom is quite adament that she is not to travel there on her own.

Cleo is exasparated and tired of her "helicopter mom" protecting and smothering her, so she makes up a story and both her and Lola head into the concert.  When Cleo's mom hears of this, she heads into the city to find her daughter and bring her home, however, she never makes it and is murdered.

When Cleo learns of her mother's death, she is left with much guilt and despair as she realizes her mother was only in the city to bring Cleo home.  Cleo does not share with her family her thoughts and they begin to eat at Cleo, quickly changing her personality and raising concerns from those around her.

Cleo must come to terms with her involvement with her mothers death and by the grace of God, accept and forgive herself.

I was intrigued with Cleo's story, I felt the author did a remarkable job expressing a delicate topic, the death of another as a result of your own actions.  I felt that Cleo's downward spiral into depression was well written and you come to feel for Cleo and her life.

I was impressed with the spiritual affirmations found within the pages, blending with the story without being too preachy.  Cleo is a strongly written character that many her age can relate to, especially if you have lost a parent to death.  Author, Melody Carlson, explains the stages of grief without the reader even realizing it occurring.

The people surrounding Cleo all shared in the story, enriching it further by their actions and their deeds.  Each person concerned for Cleo in their own way; trying to figure out the truth behind her depressive state while surrounding her with love and compassion.

I would give Shattered a four and a half out of five stars.  I shared in Cleo's journey and I cried for her heartache and if you like books on social issues having to deal with death and grief, then you will enjoy reading this tale.

Is the Watch Becoming Redundant?

I recently had a realization; this Christmas will mark a decade since I got my first ever Mobile phone. It was a Trium Mars, small and slick for its time and I could even check my school email (or at least try before all £10 of my top up credit died on Mobile internet). Looking back, it’s hard to imagine how ground breaking that felt at the time, let alone what life was like before I could take a call anywhere and anytime, have my entire music collection in my pocket and tell all my friends what I’m doing within 140 characters.

However, I feel all these technological advances have made us forget about an important must-have in life that we do all the time, consciously or subconsciously. Something we depend on to make the world go round and operate smoothly; the measurement of time.

When I was at school we sat at desks with exercise books in front of us rather than computers, and even in the work place only IT-based jobs would involve being sat in front of a monitor with a clock in the corner all working hours of the week. Mobile phones were around, but a lot of adults didn’t see the point in subjecting themselves to annoying phone calls 24/7, let alone the idea of giving a £100+ piece of equipment to a child as a play toy.

And this brings me back to how we tell the time. Research shows that the lower end of the watch market has gradually shrunk in recent years, whilst the higher end relies on social status purposes and trophy buys rather than practicality. I remember having several watches as I grew up. Some that I remember include a Muppets watch, a Power Rangers Morphing watch with a moving transfer, who knows how many Casios and one of those talking animated watches that were all the rage in the late 90s despite how chunky, cheap and silly they looked. Watches were “cool” and practical, and we’d even show them off and discuss them with each other in the playground. In the present age children can swap Lego bricks for Lego simulation games and trade playing outside for socialising online. They have iPods, computers, laptops and phones which all include a time keeping function, along with alarms, diaries, calendars, reminders and many other functions beyond a watch’s capability.

Is what was once a must-have accessory being replaced with newer technology? And do the new generation of children have the same interest in watches, or has it been replaced by how much storage their MP3 or phone has? This may leave you feeling like the watch has a bleak future, but that couldn’t be further from the truth in my opinion because of one simple reason: Fashion.

The watch’s sole function has been replaced by all the gadgets we carry in our pockets, but that’s where the watch reigns supreme. MP3 players, phones and laptops are not designed to go around our wrists like jewellery, but to sit in our pockets or bags until we need to use them for their practical function.  The watch is not a just a time telling device, but in fact a helpful fashion accessory.

Some inventions fade out by being upgraded or becoming impractical, but fashion will always exist, and the watch can adapt into whichever form it needs to stay with the “in” crowd.

Anthony Collins is a writer and reviewer of various men's grooming and fashion products for a number of websites. His passion for watches stems from his childhood and he never leaves for the office without his favourite Tissot watch around his wrist.

The Door To Far-Myst by Mike Dicerto

The Door To Far-Myst:  The Adventures Of Rupert Starbright a Fantasy Adventure.

Rupert Dullz lives in Graysland where everything is colourless.  The children of Graysland, when they are not attending school, they are raking leaves, all day, every day, it is their only source of fun.  The people of Graysland are not very imaginative and lead dull and boring lives.

Rupert's grandmother has the coffus, a horrible and debilitating cough that only leads to death.  Rupert is frantic to save her and on the day that Pie'O'Sky arrives in his huge and colourful Bagoon, Rupert's life is about the change.

Pie gives the children of Graysland two days to find their imagination and create a way in which to open the door that he shows them.  He tells them of wondrous creatures and fanciful flights of imagination and none of the children of Graysland have a clue what he is yammering on about.  Most of them think its stupid but a few try their hand at the feat.

A few of the children try blowing it up or using another key, they even try scolding the door, however, only Rupert can solve the riddle and when he realizes he has done so, he is whisked through the door into the far-away land of Far-Myst.

Rupert cannot believe his eyes, everything in Far-Myst is in colour, he has never seen such shades or variations.  Nothing is what is appears and Rupert shares his observations with Pie after they called for a hole to come and get them and Rupert explains that holes just sit and wait for folks to fall in them back in Graysland.  Pie is appalled to hear this and scolds Rupert for starving them.  Another anomaly is the Chairmen who love to race you through the streets.  Rupert tells them that chairs are used for sitting upon and they never ever move, unless you move them yourself.

When Rupert is taken to meet Queen Chroma it is there that he learns about the fate of Far-Myst.  It seems an evil man, Murkus, wants everyone to remain in darkness and he steals the children of Far-Myst and hides them away, as only children have the Imaginings and can create their imagings at will.  Rupert is there because he is a great Imaginor, though he doesn't realize it.

When the castle is attacked by Nightwingers and everything begins to turn gray, Rupert is whisked away from the battle by Weaver, the greatest gardener in all of Far-Myst.  Weaver doesn't believe Rupert should be in Far-Myst and as he mourns for his own missing children, he protects and vows to return Rupert to his own home.

As everything comes together and all hope looks to be lost, only Rupert and his Imaginings can save the day.  The only problem with that is, Rupert has no imagination.

I thought this was fantastical and curious read.  I found it to be charming and delightful and I eagerly read the pages.  I appreciated that the author wrote with intelligence, it is not easy to world build, let alone create a whole different way of seeing everyday items.  I was blown away with the author's imagination itself and really enjoyed reading it.

I loved all the characters in the book from Rupert himself to Slog, Murkus' minion, who I would've loved to have seen more from, I just got a kick out of reading him.  I would love to try out one of the Poetry peppers...they sound delicious and rewarding to boot.

I enjoyed reading Rupert and his growth.  How he went from a dull and lifeless being to Rupert Starbright, a child who wishes to believe his thoughts could be created into reality.  We watch how Rupert struggles with the adults around him and the quest he has set himself upon.  Truly, all Rupert wishes is to find a cure for his grandmother's Coffus.

I would give The Door To Far-Myst a four and a half out of five stars.  There were a few minor editorial issues and truthfully, I would've liked to have seen more of Far-Myst and more of the characters.  I truly look forward to another adventure by Rupert Starbright and the imaginings of author, Mike Dicerto.

SYNOPSIS:
Rupert Dullz isn't very happy. His grandmother's coffus is getting worse, school is boring and there's nothing to do on his days off but rake up endless piles of leaves. Everything in Graysland is, well, gray, and every day is just like the one before it, and the one before that. That is, until a strangely dressed man named Pie O'Sky swoops out of nowhere in his multicolored bagoon and offers a special reward to whoever can open his mysterious door. When Rupert succeeds, he's thrilled when Pie O'Sky carries him beyond it to the brilliantly colored land of Far-Myst. Adventure calls, and Rupert discovers a wonderful world full of something he's never heard of before--imagination. But Far-Myst is in danger, and it may be that only Rupert has the power to save it. Is he the one whose imagination is powerful enough to stop the evil that is destroying the beautiful world beyond the door?
