White Sleeper by David R. Fett and Stephen Langford

White Sleeper:  A Novel is a political thriller.

Dr. Dave Richards works for the CDC and his job there is held tenaciously as one of the higher ups doesn't like his style.  His friend and supervisor , Dr. Root, sends Dave down to investigate Arkansas where a case of botulism has been reported.

When Dave arrives in Arkansas, he is also confronted not only with the botulism, but another family has contracted bubonic plague.  The two families show signs of this being a forced inoculation and Dave knows that a terrorist cell has formed in order to bring bio-warfare to the USA.

Following procedure he calls in the FBI to help handle the case while he begins to track down the source of the diseases.  Their greatest fear has occurred, a white sleeper is amongst the muslim terrorists and it could be anybody!

FBI agent Paula Mushari, is an arabic muslim and many in her department don't trust her.  When she is assigned to this case, she is unsure how to proceed and follows Dave's leads and the two go traipsing about the country seeking the culprits involved with this crime.  During their journey, another family is reported to have contracted rabies and with three separate diseases it soon becomes apparent that a test is in play with these people's lives.

Ben Curran is an orphan whose parents were killed by the authorities in a sting to capture his father, who was a known white supremacist with the Knights of the White Order.  Ben bides his time and plans on seeking revenge for the death of his parents.  When he stumbles upon a terrorist cell after fleeing to New York, he feels his prayers have been answered and God has chosen him to be his messenger of doom.

Mr. Smith is a ghost with the CIA, meaning, he does not exist.  He alone believes that Dave is on the right track and encourages and enables him to continue his search for the culprits.  When Dave's boss, the arrogant and impossible Lussier, removes him from the case in order to be the star of the show, Mr. Smith points Dave in the right direction and together Dave and Paula race against time to save the world from utter destruction.

This is a fast-paced read without too much to bog you down in the linguistics.  Dave and Paula are likeable characters, although you have to wonder at times, how Paula became a FBI agent, she hasn't much in the way of instincts.

Dave was always talking about his ability to find the truth hidden in plain view, but for the most part, he either stumbled upon the information or was pointed in the right direction.  I would've liked to have seen more of Dave's natural abilities, but I felt that if it wasn't being pointed out to him, he'd have missed the whole show.  I also felt that there wasn't any real investigation in the whole set-up, the whole lot of them just blindly stumbled here and there and everything seemed to work out for all involved.

Such as how Ben Curran was identified, I mean, come on!  Some dude, Ryan Conley from the ATF, who was lead investigator at the cabin when Ben's parents were killed, HAPPENED to sit at a desk of another individual who, unrelated to the cabin incident, had a picture of Ben and Conley was able to positively ID Ben.  That was just too easy and I found most of the evidence and clues provided were shared in this same matter.  I like my clues and evidence to be more intellectually shared and not so cut and dry and blind fool stumbling.

The premise behind the plot is a bit clichéd and not enough background information was given on the CDC, the authors assumed that folks know what and how the CDC work, but a bit more information on their involvement in the USA's political diplomacy since 911 would have been more beneficial.

This wasn't a bad read and I would love to read more about the people involved and with how the book ended you get the feeling that these characters haven't been retired forever.  This is definitely a book about action rather than character build-up as the reader is zipped from one incident to the next without any real information connecting the situations together.

However, it's a good read, the flow is disrupted in places but overall, you could have this easily read in a few hours.  If you are looking for something to pass your time without too much bog down, then you will enjoy this book!

SYNOPSIS:
When Arkansas experiences a wave of rare fatal diseases, the CDC sends disgraced doctor Dave Richards to investigate, and he knows this is the case that could save his career. When he teams up with FBI agent Paula Mushari, Richards thinks he may have found the person who can help him find the answers. But as they dig deeper, they begin to get a sinister glimpse into what they are dealing with-a vengeful sect, led by the son of a late white supremacist, intent on destroying a nation. As Richards fights to save his job, he and Mushari must race against the clock to prevent a plague of catastrophic proportions.

Author Bio:

Sonya Clark grew up an Army brat, living all across the United States as well as Japan and Germany by the time she graduated high school. Books were one of the few constants in her life. An eclectic reader, she always had a special love for the paranormal and is a lifelong fangirl of all things that go bump in the night.

A deep love of music is another constant thread in all of her fiction. She writes at a desk equipped with High John the Conqueror root and a mojo hand. She has worshipped at the mother church of country music, traveled the back roads of the blues highway, been to the crossroads at midnight, and though she’s never cooked up a mess of polk salad, she has been to Graceland four times.

She lives with her husband and Yorkie in Tennessee.

Spooky South
By Sonya Clark

The haunted South is the perfect setting for a paranormal story. Southern history is rich with blood and ghosts. Many stories of hauntings originate from the dual horrors of slavery and the Civil War. Battlefields all over the south are said to be haunted by dead soldiers from both armies. There seems to be a darkness cast upon this part of the country because of slavery and the war, as if the stain of owing other human beings and the nightmare of a country fighting itself have left this land susceptible to spirits that can find no rest.

One of the greatest things this region has given the world is its music: jazz, country, blues, and rock and roll. All can trace their roots deep into Southern soil, and all can boast of wonderfully spooky tales. Hank Williams Sr. is said to haunt the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, the original home of the Grand Ole Opry. Loretta Lynn lives in a haunted house in Hurricane Mills. The Orpheum Theater in Memphis is said to be haunted by the ghost of a child named Mary. Some believe the ghost of Elvis Presley haunts his home at Graceland, though that one may be wishful thinking.

My favorite spooky story from the South is also a famous blues legend. Mississippi bluesman Robert Johnson is said to have met the devil at a crossroads at midnight to sell his soul in exchange for the ability to play guitar. With song titles like “Me and the Devil Blues” and “Hellhound on My Trail” it’s easy to believe Johnson signed away his soul. The truth is somewhat more prosaic. It’s known that he practiced playing in a graveyard at night so no one would be bothered by the noise. Although come to think of it, that’s pretty spooky in and of itself.

There’s no shortage of variations on the story of the Bell Witch legend of Adams, Tennessee. Some say the witch was a local woman who cursed John Bell in the early eighteen hundreds. Some stories suggest the frightening occurrences that befell the Bell family were the work of a ghost or spirit. President Andrew Jackson visited the Bell home and is said to have stated “I would rather fight the entire English Army then to have to face the Bell Witch again." The legend has taken on a life of its own and inspired plenty of fiction that bears little resemblance to the old tales.

Setting Mojo Queen in Nashville and drawing from the spooky atmosphere of the South has given the story a certain flavor that it might not otherwise have. I have a great well of supernatural material to mine for story ideas as I write about my paranormal investigator Roxie Mathis. She’ll never be out of work down here in the spooky South.

Such A Nice Boy by Daren Krupa

Such A Nice Boy is a romance novel.

Alan Hovey is a man who has serious conflicting emotions when it comes to his sexuality.  He has had relationships with women, however, he enjoys sex with men, although he doesn't consider himself a homosexual.

Lindsey Ronan is a married woman and co-worker of Alan's who is just returning to work from a maternity leave.  She is in a loveless marriage and is sexually attracted to Alan even though she realizes his attraction to men.  This makes it even harder on Lindsey, as she once found her ex-boyfriend in bed with another man.

Alan also fantasizes about Lindsey and the two of them find themselves becoming closer to one another.  It doesn't help that Alan's friends and family are always hounding him to begin a relationship.  His mother has just about given up hope on her middle-aged son ever finding someone to settle down with.

Alan used to enjoy the one night stands but he comes to realize that he needs something or someone in his life to make him complete.  When he and Lindsey get closer, Alan must comes to terms with his commitments and the reason his relationships fail.

For a debut novel it was an okay read.  I had some difficulty had times with the dialogue, often it read as stalwart and trite and other times it was a jumble of randomness that didn't make any sense and had to be reread to understand the gist of the narrative.  However, as the book progresses the author seems to better control this aspect and the dialogue does become better placed.

I liked Alan, even with his neuroses and his hang-ups.  I thought he was likeable character even though he appeared disjointed at times. I was sorry to see all the bad luck that headed his way but enjoyed the emotions that he displayed with dealing with the stress.

The expletives are mild to moderate and this book would definitely be enjoyed by adults who are open to homosexual encounters.   It's worth a read to understand the exchange between the main characters and how the outcome was managed.

SYNOPSIS:
It’s the summer of 1999 in Denver. Alan Hovey is living the life he dreamed: sex with handsome, buffed, eager men. Except he isn’t gay. Made no difference until he crossed paths with female co-worker Lindsey Ronan and her infant son Morgan. He starts getting notions about Lindsey and being a heterosexual father whenever he’s holding Morgan. Lindsey is married but she’s afraid of Alan because of a traumatizing incident during college. At work Alan has become a pariah for having boldly stood up for himself. He draws the attention of Frank Lively, VP of HR, homophobic and deeply closeted. Frank tries to harass Alan into quitting. After Lindsey verbally demolishes him while shopping for making eyes at another, Alan meets a young man who says you’re with me because you’re mad at Lindsey. Alan becomes more confused after accidently seeing Lindsey at work with her blouse off, and displays a very obvious reaction. The path Alan follows and the choices he makes form the heart of a boy who at age forty two becomes a man. He crawls out of a family upbringing filled with death and chooses life. His coming of age is unique and compelling.

The Bum Magnet by K.L. Brady

The Bum Magnet is a debut romance novel by author K.L. Brady.

Charisse Tyson has never found herself a decent man.  Each time she finds "the one", they turn out to be bums.  Hence, her own self-titled nickname, "bum magnet."

Charisse is a successful real estate agent who is beautiful, funny, charming and has a great support system around her.  Her only fault in life is her fear of commitment and the lack of a good man.

Over the years she has found and fallen in love with many a heel, Lee, her cousin who did her wrong; Lamar from her days in college, who she knew was a "player" and still invited him into her bed and her heart; Sean, the married man; Jason, ten years her junior; Marcus the control freak; Dwayne who has loads of secrets and non-chalant answers and Kevin, who she believes is stalking her.

Each of these men continue to pop in and out of her life and every time she figures out the baggage she carries they throw a wrench into her life plans and string her along with lies and confusion.  Just when she believes she cannot handle anymore emotional abuse, one of these men step up to the plate and prove that all her convictions were unheralded.

I thought this was a well-written debut novel.  I really loved the character of Charisse and of all the female characters that I have read this year, and I've read a LOT of them, she has to be one of my top five favourites.  I loved her sassy, comedic attitude and her instincts were sound, even though she always second guessed herself.  She was written as a real person and you just loved reading about her and her mismatched woes in love.

The book is very easy to read and the flow is perfect, allowing you to continue without wishing to put the book down.  The comedy written into the book was flavourable and fitting for the situations.  The characters were real in their actions and approach.  As a reader you were seeing things before Charisse did and you wanted to reach out and slap the dudes away who were disrupting her life.  If only she didn't love chocolate so much...

This is a great romance novel and I'm sure many will enjoy the prose between its pages.  You will be glad when some of these men get exactly what they deserve and you will be pleased with the ending.  I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a good love story!

SYNOPSIS:
She's a savvy, successful real estate agent with a quick wit, a low tolerance for BS, a gorgeous plus-size body, and a thirst for top shelf vodka. Despite her dream house, luxury car, and appetite for life's best--like fine dining and hot men--she seems to have her own special talent for attracting players. Why do all of her ex-lovers belong in the Losers Hall of Fame? There was Lamar, the hazel-eyed Adonis who sowed more wild oats than Quaker . . . Sean, an expert at juggling relationships . . . Marcus, whose lips wandered as often as his eyes . . . and others, too. But just as Rissey swears off sex and vows to dump her emotional baggage, she meets house-hunting client Dwayne Gibson. There's no way she can resist his seductive smile and rock-hard body. . . Will Dwayne turn out to be the biggest bum of them all? Or will this time be different?
